Finally! The United States has declared War on Florida.

Well, not sure if that's true, subby.....TFA states that the plane is remotely controlled and will explode itself if it becomes uncontrollable, which suggests pilot error (however remote that pilot it), and will probably end up harming the pilot in the form of a reprimand.

Florida is really an oil rich third world nation? Huh, that explains a lot.

Yes, but we think so little of them that we shoot them down for fun.

Need to keep the damn things at Holloman where there's nothing to crash into except sand.

Hwy. 98 isn't exactly "remote"...it's one of the main connectors to the Gulf coast from I-10.

In other news, F4s are battery powered.

Why the hell did they choose the flying brick to remote control?

Being a retired Zoomie, I have seen these drones used and understood that they used these for weapons development and pilot weapons training and the like but I didn't know we had lots of them left...

"Mission
The supersonic QF-4 is a reusable full-scale target drone modified from the F-4 Phantom. The QF-4 provides a realistic full-scale target for air-to-air weapons system evaluation, development and testing at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., and Holloman AFB, N.M. "

(I saw them at White Sands)

Google found " Over 230 Phantoms have been "droned" since 1995 "

I've driven that stretch many a time, and many a time I'd watch drone fighters come in a lot lower than I would like.  Even slowed down a few times because I thought things looked a might 'iffy'....

Closing that stretch of road is a real pain in the arse.  However,as a former Mexico Beach resident, I don't really care if those hillbillies are inconvenienced.

 But i'm not bitter...

Location 11 at AMARC has 26 F-4s, left and their inventory shows maybe as many as 250 left but those are dwindling fast. Some have been designated as parts only for other nations that still fly F-4s, other are gong to be part of this QF-4 program for the next few years and a few still are designated as "Heritage" aircraft for flying USAF's Heritage Flight program, to fill a gap in historical coverage between World War Two and Korean War warbirds and modern fighters. Six QF-4Es were repainted in camouflage schemes from the F-4's operational service, four at Tyndall and two at Holloman. Following USAF approval, they took part in Heritage Flight formations at a few airshows on each coast in 2005. In 2006, the QF-4s received Heritage Flight funding from Air Combat Command - the 2005 flights had been funded from the 53 WEG operating budget! - allowing the QF-4s to appear at approximately 20 shows. As well, a simple QF-4 solo display routine was introduced.

Not necessarily.  If it got over the highway, then it had a successful takeoff before something happened.  That, or it was on the return leg after a mission and something happened.  It's a very odd place to crash one due to pilot error.

I knew a guy that worked on the drones, there's a big red button in the control room.  If anything goes wrong that is a big pain to fix, they blow it up rather than risk flying it home.

At least you were driving.  Try working on the EOD range while those things are flying around.
