Something about every little Communist enclave, where sooner or later the drive for Levi's, Coco-Cola, and Big Macs wins out over Marxism, Maoism, Stalinism, and every other variety.   Somehow we keep getting a new supply of Marxist ideologues that believe that the "Dictatorship of the Proletariat" will be a hipster paradise of organic food and leisure.   Every one of these places began with this idea that no one would ever "own" anything, but when I hear about how nice anything in one of these little so called utopias its always this family's rice farm or this cigar factory and now someone will return to Vietnam to own a restaurant franchise.   How many of our soldiers died so they could go through a phase, a ruse where they, like China, are still ostensibly Communist and yet begin to grow a class of wealthy Capitalists?

I remember watching some footage from the Tet offensive of an attack on a road near the big airbase, and
the bridge in the scene looked a helluvalot like the overpasses on an Intersate highway back here in the
state.  Not surprising because the US infrastructure in South Vietnam was built at the same time as a mass
of road building back home, and it only made sense that they'd use the same plans (if not the same
contractors) to do a similar project overseas.

It was kind of eerie, actually.  Like watching a civil war along the NJ Turnpike.

Well I have read that America and Vietnam have been improving relations as a consequence of China's territorial aggression.  Given how the vietnamese and the chinese have been getting along for the last 1000 or so years it seems strange that they were ever allies.

Vietnam must see the US as a great counterweight to China in that region.

The French.

Almost everything bad that has happened in Vietnam over the past 200 years can be blamed on them.  Colonial rule and exploitation?  Yep.  (Developing a modern, non-Chinese writing system was nice, though, so give them some credit.)  Rolling over for the Japanese?  Yep.  The First Indochina War?  Yep.  Catholic oppression of the religious majority, even in the South?  Yep.

Ho Chi Minh gained a lot of support because the Viet Minh worked so hard to throw the French out, and while Diem, the South's ruler, also hated the French, he didn't actively oppose them during the war, and his Catholic regime oppressed Buddhists.  Not "Help, I'm being oppressed!" oppression, either.  No, actual raids on Buddhist pagodas, complete with vandalism and arrests.

Most Vietnamese people I know hate China, too, but that's an older grudge that comes from China's centuries of being jerks to everyone around them (plus a thousand years of colonial rule, with just a few gaps here and there).  The French are the more recent villains, even if they were mostly incompetent.
