760 people have died since the heat wave started. Only 2 of those were because of the heat wave.

Don't these people have bathtubs of water they can cool off in rather than dying from heat? I don't get it.

chevydeuce: I still have trouble understanding how or why people are dying because of 85 degree weather....

It's because it's unusual here in Britain. 70 degrees is hot for over here - we're more used to wind and rain. Elderly people don't drink enough fluids in this weather and idiotic teenagers jump into rivers and lakes then drown because the water's cold and it shocks their body into shutting down.

Just because it's unusual doesn't mean you drop dead. Tourism would be awful if as soon as a plane from Canada landed in say Honolulu we all died.

Their houses are designed to keep heat in, so that's got to suck at the moment. Most don't have ceiling fans let a lone A/C.

FTFA: The village was submerged in 1935 to create the reservoir but the continuing hot and dry weather has resulted in water levels dropping, leaving the stonewalls of the valley visible again. The United Utilities reservoir supplies water to Manchester and North West England

Ah.  Yes.  Heat and dry weather.  There might also be the fact that it's a reservoir, and thus water is getting used faster than it's being resupplied?  :D

shiat, meant to type more before I sent this....

And yes, I understand that the DM is a horrible rag of a paper, and that some of the deaths were due to people's own idiocy....but the larger question still remains.  How in the hell is 85 degrees "deadly"?  There's people who pay huge money for property in places where it stays that cool ALL the time....

Let the Brits enjoy their "heatwave".  They had almost no sunshine at all last summer and all they have is 11 months of overcast skies and drizzle to look forward to.

My friends up in Alaska just went through a heatwave not to long ago as well. They were "dying" in 90-100F weather but they didn't actually die, they just wanted to die.

2013-07-18 11:28:48 AM
Yes..  Well the BBC articles give more information.

They don't use air conditioning, only heating registers.

So surprise heat that can't escape is surprising.

Plus, they have Green initiatives in low income housing that packs a lot of insulation, so that the heat stays in.  Large buildings full of people with no AC, at all, and heat can't escape due to the way it's built.

So.. ovens.
