First off, bravo schlubbmitter.

Secondly...does this seem like a huge waste of resources?  She can't function.

Born without a brain? Don't you need that?

2013-07-18 09:53:14 AM
This really is sad.  There are cases where people have been born with large parts of their brain missing and didn't even notice until they got an MRI one day, were of at least average intelligence.  This doesn't sound like one of those cases, this sounds like a vegetable with no hope whatsoever.  Just sad.

This is a huge waste of resources!!!   This child will never talk, have a personality, or remember shiat.   I would have to ask her mother, what kind of life is that?   Why would you want your child to suffer like that because yes, that child is suffering.

Should have been aborted.

I understand that parents routinely raise and care for seriously disabled children, but this seems extraordinary. The child is literally not capable of anything. What's the purpose?

/not a parent, so I really don't have a dog in this fight, but still

Yeah, caring for a severely retarded child is one thing, but this seems like absolute brain death.  Or rather, a brain that never had life to begin with.  I am a parent, and I can only imagine that would be a TERRIBLE situation to be in.  I guess the saving grace is the child probably is incapable of feeling pain, or even sentience so at least I guess she's not harming her, but this isn't a condition that's ever going to get any better.

The important question here being....DOES SHE HAVE A SOUL?

Dolphins are supposed to be pretty smart. Why don't we try wiring a dolphin's cerebral cortex into this girl's head? It seems like it's worth a shot, and we could learn a lot about how the wiring would have to work.

Is there at least research being done, so they might find some sort of fix for this, like in stem cells?

I could see being a parent and believing, "someday they'll get you some way to actually grow a brain, or maybe keep some other family from the same fate".

Stories like this really put "real" problems (like using dynamic, gender-neutral pronouns so as not to upset the perpetually "offended") into perspective.

Actually, I don't know if this organism is capable of what we call 'suffering.' But, I'm not a brain surgeon.

The maternal instinct is all powerful. The best we could hope for is that she realizes there is no hope and decides to donate organs.

I'm not a brain surgeon either, but I'd suspect she isn't even aware of her own existence much less feeling pain.  Not sentient, not alive, that's my best guess.

Maybe if the mother would have had some prenatal care she would have found out more than a week before she delivered.

Good on you for the waste of money and torturing this poor baby for so long.

At least the chance of this child feeling any pain and suffering is pretty low.

The parents live in Hell on Earth, but the kid's done nothing wrong.

This.  Prior to the recent illness was she able to live without assistance?  If not then she should have held the kid, said her goodbyes and turned off the machines.  Don't let your "child" live for 6 years without a brain while being supported by

That is WAY over the line, subby. Most brainless organisms have no interest in Congressional politics.

There apparently is not a scientific consensus if this is an entirely genetic condition:  if you cloned her, would the clone have a brain or not?

If the clone grew successfully with a brain, then you could transplant the brain to the original, since clones have no souls.

She may be suffering, but it isn't like she knows it or remembers it. Which is kinda one of the key aspects of suffering.

To play devil's advocate here, the article doesn't say that she survives through life support - perhaps there has never been the option of "pulling the plug"?

Unlikely, I know. But her parents don't have much of a choice in the matter if her body is just about able to support itself (short of euthanasia, which is a very different decision than simply switching off life support)

2013-07-18 10:56:31 AM
That poor bereaved, insane woman. I know it's hard, lady, but let her go. You should have long before now. Not just for your sake, but for your kid's. She's not living. She's a sightless moppet that you dress every day hoping for a miracle. That miracle is never going to happen.

nekom: I am a parent, and I can only imagine that would be a TERRIBLE situation to be in.

I'm a parent and I would have pulled the plug on day 1. This isn't a child. It's an empty shell and will never be a child. At best, it's a really expensive tax deduction.

Pretty solid guess.  No brain = no person.  No consciousness.  No feeling.  Not even rudimentary instincts.  It's just a husk, not a person.  Just a lump of flesh.  Organs grown and maintained serving no purpose.  Essentially an organic mannequin.

Pretty valuable, from an experimental standpoint.  It's not every day you've got a perfectly functioning body without any driving intelligence upon which you could test any variety of drugs or medical techniques.  This thing doesn't feel pain.  Hell, it doesn't *feel*.  Let medical science have a go.
