Does this figure include the Asiana flight that nearly missed the runway in San Francisco?

Yeah but if collisions are down 600% then it's trending in the right directions.

George Carlin:

"Here's a phrase that apparently the airlines simply made up: near miss. They say that if 2 planes almost collide, it's a near miss. Bullshiat, my friend. It's a near hit! A collision is a near miss.
[WHAM! CRUNCH!]
"Look, they nearly missed!"
"Yes, but not quite."

Aren't these statistics all voluntarily reported?  If they could just make the reporting process more cumbersome they could dramatically improve these numbers.  If you had to hand deliver the report to the top of Mt. McKinley with a live stingray and a check for $25000 I'll bet we could eliminate near misses entirely.

Apparently, Newsmax has trended from the paranoid right-wing market to the niche market of paranoid right-wing old people.

Isn't a near miss a hit?

/That's like falling between the cracks.

FAA's definition of a near miss is pretty broad.  I seem to recall it's something on the order of 3 miles of following distance, so if your plane gets within 2.9 miles of the plane in front of it it's classed as a "near miss."

I wonder how many of these are technical near misses and how many are "I need to change my pants" near misses.

The increase in near misses are because of the sequester being implemented.

Depends on the context. With two aircraft each going 300-500mph, 3 miles is pretty damn close. Even if you saw the other aircraft (a big if) by the time your brain registered that fact it would probably be too late.

Wasn't this supposed to be the case?

Maybe not "near-misses," but planes are going to be flying closer and closer together thanks to programs like reduced vertical separation minima and ADS-B.

Well, isn't aviation graying at an insane rate? Everyone on the AOPA mailing list got an AARP membership invitation recently because that's a legitimate demographic match. Fewer than 20% of GA pilots are under 55. I'm not sure how that translates to commercial, but it isn't good.

/cheaper flight school and more investment in the Civil Air Patrol would be nice.
//that, or a tech-support for behind-the-yoke hours trade program could also help. I'm paying for husband's flight school in barter to a trio of nice older flight instructors, great guys, who got sick of paying for AppleCare and Geek Squad.
///when you hear about a major exploit and think "oh, good, he only needs three more for VFR," there's your sign.

Sometimes you have got to get a headline to get that $$$ for NextGen.

Hell, it took a week with a 10% reduction in ATC staffing to slow things down quicker than a Chipotle burrito before it was reversed.
