That's wonderful, but has lab cells with Downs Syndrome really been a problem?

GENE scientists said that in lab-dish cells, they had found a way to switch off the rogue chromosome that causes Down syndrome.

Rogue Chromosome is a great band name.

Great news.  But I was really hoping this was physics article.  I was all ready with a snarky post about the "spin" in the article.

Does switching off a gene in an adult patient make the Down go away?

Okay, that's pretty farkin' cool, right there.

BarkingUnicorn: Does switching off a gene in an adult patient make the Down go away?

I can't imagine the effort that would take, but I think by then, the person's brain has developed according to their chromosomes.  I don't think they become "unDowned."  I don't know if "fixed" would be a proper term.

And the right wing will fight like crazy to make sure nothing ever happens with the cure.

Its actually "Down" syndrome, so, your fail could have been avoided if you'd only left the lyric intact.

I know that I'm engaging the derp here but why would the right wing fight like crazy to prevent a cure that would prevent tens of thousands of abortions a year?

If you're going to go full conspiracy-derp, it would be the left wing fighting to keep alive the abortion-industrial complex.

/That's how you derp.

Because the Right Wing's anti abortion stance has very little to do with the baby.  Otherwise, they wouldn't be cutting food stamps and health benefits for low income families, gutting education, and would fully endorse the use of birth control.

because the reason that the right-wingers oppose abortion is not to prevent murder, but to punish whores. so if you remove some of the punishment, you defeat their purpose.

I can't speak for the anti-choice crowd, but I'm sure that such treatment won't be cheap or not require significant skill, and we know there is a significant amount of people in Congress who don't want to alleviate medical costs for most Americans through the power of government.
