I don't remember Danica Patrick coming out, but if you say so...

Yeah, NASCAR fans wouldn't care if their favorite racer or one of their favorite teams farked Cheetos for fun. Do they turn left at very high speeds really well? That's all that matters.

Why is the headline of TFA "Is NASCAR Ready For An Openly Gay Driver?" if they had one ten years ago? Shouldn't it be "Is NASCAR Ready For Another Openly Gay Driver?"

This is just another cover-up by the homoloving members of NASCAR to keep their fans from knowing THE TRUTH. Dale Earnhardt was also homopositive, and died a week before his wreck of GRIDS. To keep the people from knowing the truth, they arranged for his corpse to be loaded into a remote control car, and crashed into the wall at high speed. He didn't die from ramming the wall, he died from ramming ass.

WAKE UP AND LOOK TO JEEEESU SHEEPLE.

Jeff Gordon's gay
Jeff Gordon's gay
At least that's what those ornery Earnhardt fans always say
They swear he's usin' Vaseline on the 24 Chevrolet
Jeff Gordon's gay
He must be gay

He wears rainbow colors
He's a handsome feller
Standin' in vict'ry lane
With a gorgeous ex-wife with a check in her hand
Sippin' on gay champagne
And those Earnhardt fans up in the stands
All chokin' on bread and Spam
Say Gordon's gay every time he turns
And hugs Ray Evernham

Jeff Gordon's gay
He must be gay
At least that's what the losers who lose every Sunday always say
He's in the IROC Pink Cadillac for Mary Kay
Jeff Gordon's gay
He must be gay

He's got four Winston Cup trophies
At home on his trophy shelf
But I betcha he can't pick one up
At least not by hisself
And we can't figure out how he can drive so sissy fast
I think the only driver that's gay in the race is the one who comes in last
(Which is usually Danica Patrick)

Jeff Gordon's gay
He must be gay
He's probably whistlin' Elton John
or Spandau Ballet
He's got the Rainbow Warriors singin' YMCA
Jeff Gordon's gay
He must be gay

Gay only counts if there is a media spectacle involved.

The rumor used to be that Alan Kulwicki was a big fan of "getting tagged hard from behind" which made it even funnier that he drove the Hooters car.

I never really understood this whole idea of "being ready" for gay people.  I mean, isn't it easier to just see them as people and not give a shiat about anything else beyond that?

Isn't the general feeling that Richmond farked just about anyone that would let him?   He was the party boy.

Kind of fitting that Cole Trickle is based on Richmond, you know since Tom Cruise swings both ways.

The general feeling was that he was pretty fabulous, but jesus christ that guy could wheel a race car, so who gives a shiat.

It's hard to imagine what the 90's would have been like with Richmond, Earnhardt, and Gordon.

"Being ready" is code for "will the social pressure of people who mostly don't give a fark prevent outspoken assholes from doing something that will be attributed to the fanbase as a whole?"

NASCAR is "almost" ready, but not quite. We need a few hundred more closeted Mikey jokes, and at least one more Tim Richmond documentary before that happens.

No one, and I think that is the point.  NASCAR (for the most part and despite some of its fans) has been pretty inclusive of anyone who can show up and drive.  Wendell Scott took some heat at the regional level at first until Bill France stepped in and told them to cut that shiat out and let him drive.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn he was a switch hitter but I don't think he was full on fabulous, just that he would fark anything that would move and do any substance he could get his hands on.

He was also the absolute best driver of that era, bar none.  He could have come right out and said I swing both ways and zero farks would have been given.

I always thought Tim Richmond got pegged with the gay thing because he got AIDS in the 80s and back then the sentiment was that only gay people got AIDS.

I just want to believe that drivers in the Camping World Truck Series have to race trucks that are towing campers. I don't understand the allure of racing, but I would watch that.

Pretty much, as far as I understand it. The memories of how horribly NASCAR pried into, manipulated, and ostracized him, then denied, denied, and denied some more once the deed was done, all while those rumors were flying are a big part of why they're so quick to try and seem "inclusive" now. Even though nobody was really asking them. Hence the feelgood PR story about some low level guy who ran a couple truck races without getting dragged behind one when they were done.

The truth is a lot more complicated.  Richmond was (to my knowledge) the first major sports star with AIDS.  He was diagnosed a full 5 years before Magic Johnson.

NASCAR didn't keep him off the track at the start of 1987.  He was too sick to drive.  His spectacular comeback in the late summer of 1987 was something to behold, but he couldn't even finish that season.  He was dead from AIDS complications three days short of two years after his last start.

1988 is a bit trickier.  Lots of  people suspected he had AIDS but he continued to deny it.  NASCAR wanted to know and IMO had a legitimate right to know but TM fought releasing his medical records to NASCAR.  Really, it was a moot question.  He was so sick by then the odds are good that he couldn't have raced at all.  He certainly wouldn't have finished the season.

I think it is important to note that nobody ever asks, "Am I ready for... (fill in the blank)"  it is always "Is someone else ready".  So whenever that question is asked, I always figure that asker just realized how they were thinking and now is transposing their old views to a group of people that they see as "less enlightened".
