She wrote that song when she was 19 and she's never going to live it down.

Mugato: She wrote that song when she was 19 and she's never going to live it down.

It'll probably be inscribed on her tombstone. She will always be remembered for it. Possibly included in future dictionaries as multiple negative examples of irony. We may even name a nickel-iron asteroid after her, just so it will always be out there, hanging among the stars.

It may be dumb, but it still made her (label) some righteous jack.

IIRC, isn't the only ironic part of the song its name, thus the point?

18 years is a long time to obsess over a song with imprecise lyrics.

It's ironic that the song that corrects Alanis' song sucks worse than the original. And I'm talking about how out of tune the singing is. I wouldn't care about the long lyrics if she could hold a note.

PainInTheASP: It may be dumb, but it still made her (label) some righteous jack.

I thought it is just a good album. It has five radio hits.

Some fark mod must've submitted this, because it's awful.

Yeah, before that we just called them "friends that fark"

It's caused more misuses of its tag, infighting, arguments over the accuracy of it, and so much more here on Fark.

She seems mildly attractive to me. Kind of a long face. She sucked off that doughy, humorless sitcom dork. Another negative.

All I got was closeout Pixie Sticks that he told me was crack.

That song isn't ironic either. It's more unluckily coincidental.

You can argue that Alanis Morissette's original song is ironic since the lyrics subvert the meaning of the title, which would be a case of irony.

Strangely enough, I actually know someone who blew Bob Saget. Among other things. In the bathroom, at a party she crashed in New York City.

I dunno, if I were her I don't think I'd brag about that.

The song is ironic because it pretends to talk about things that are ironic but aren't.

I thought she was hot when she was on You Can't Do That On Television and she had the Danny Pintauro haircut.  She was much better looking in an obtainable, bathe her (no, really, bathe her) and bring her to me way when that album came out.

2013-07-17 11:54:11 PM
Yeah, I actually laughed at a couple lines.

Also, it is ironic when you find 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife.  That actually was the only ironic thing in that song.

CSB time:

It was shortly after this song came out I was in high school and taking a Creative Writing class (that's a whole different story as to why) and during the first week the teacher was going around the room asking us to give examples of words like 'alteration', 'satire', 'documentary'.  And my word was 'irony'.  I smiled and said "It's like rain..." and the teacher stopped me and said "If the next words out of your mouth are 'on your wedding day', I will fail you right now."  So I said "A no smoking sign on your cigarette break?".

She waited her whole damned life, to live down that song... and when the asteroid crashed down into her tomb...... well isn't that ironic.

that's not ironic.  It's unfortunate, but not ironic.  You'd have to, for example, spend hours looking for spoons and then when you finally find 10K of them, realize that what you needed was a knife.

I always liked the College Humor version, with something along the lines of "It's like 10,000 spoons, when all you need is a knife, to hold up that Soup Kitchen you're trying to rob."

George Carlin was a pedantic jerk?
If I were in charge of the networks, an excerpt from George Carlin's book, Brain Droppings

Irony deals with opposites; it has nothing to do with coincidence. If two baseball palyers from the same hometown, on different teams, receive the same uniform number, it is not ironic. It is a coincidence. If Barry Bonds attains lifetime statistics identical to his father's it will not be ironic. It will be a coincidence. Irony is "a state of affairs that is the reverse of what was to be expected; a result opposite to and in mockery of the appropriate result." For instance:

If a diabetic, on his way to buy insulin, is killed by a runaway truck, he is the victim of an accident. If the truck was delivering sugar, he is the victim of an oddly poetic coincidence. But if the truck was delivering insulin, ah! Then he is the victim of an irony.

If a Kurd, after surviving bloody battle with Saddam Hussein's army and a long, difficult escape through the mountains, is crushed and killed by a parachute drop of humanitarian aid, that, my friend, is irony writ large.

The funny thing is nobody every said anything about it when the song was popular, it's something that's come about with the popularity of the internet and peoples incessant need to nitpick every little thing to death in an attempt to prove to others how smart they are. I have as much concern for this as I do the morons who get bent out of shape over how people use of the word literally.

Socratic irony
noun
Pretended ignorance in discussion.

Irony
noun
An outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

Origin:
1495-1505; dissimulation, sarcasm, understatement, equivalent to eírōn a dissembler + -eia -y3

This tread is chock full of Socratic irony, in that you people are pretending not to know that George Carlin totally misdefined irony. The song in question is full of actual, by definition, irony. If you pay for a fancy drink, you don't expect the waiter to bring it to you with a dirty insect floating in it. On your wedding day, you don't expect to get caught in a torrential downpour. If you are desperately in search of one knife, you do not expect to open a drawer and find nothing but 10,000 spoons. The example of a man who spends his life afraid to fly, gets on the flight, and then crashes with his last thought being that it's a pleasant flight, is dramatic irony; he doesn't know he's about to die, but the audience does.

I don't think I have ever heard that song without someone saying something about it not being ironic, then or now.
