Love it that Diggers made the tags.

"Digger"

Wow... so much about that bothers me.

Is the writer a 4 year old boy?

Nothing trumps the Florida tag.  Nothing.

blatz514: Nothing trumps the Florida tag.  Nothing.

Figured Florida was having a rough week.  That said, "after watching the dramatic rescue effort unfold, local resident Thad Brett brought his digger to the beachfront to carry the bear away" is about the most Florida sentence I've ever read.

Only someone in AZ could top that.  Well, maybe.

Uh, Hero tag?

I was expecting a stupid tag. I was also expecting Darwin to take a bow on center stage.

Don't get me wrong, I love animals. But trying to save a drowning bear that would be nearly 4 and half times my weight just seems like a bad idea.

Bears?  At the ocean?

It's more likely than you think.

Where that Indian kid in the life raft when you need him?

Good for him...and I'm glad his tranked bear story had a better ending than mine did. I've told this story on Fark before, so please forgive me if you've read it. While a young biologist in the NPS I was on a team that tranked a problem bear that promptly climbed about 25' up a tree. When it got sleepy it toppled out and landed on its head, breaking its neck and killing itself. Oops!

My candidate would be something along the lines of "Miami police have not confirmed the details of what happened next, but sources close to the investigation told CBS4 News that officers found one man gnawing on the face of another, in what one police source called the most gruesome thing he'd ever seen."

After taking drugs you should wait an hour before you go swimming.

Someone was heard to yell, "Digger, please!"

And that's why bears shouldn't do drugs.

FTA:  Adam Warwick just couldn't let the bear drown, so he took off his shirt and dive after it.

:-/  I remember when you could count on the editors at Treehugger.

according to this report: http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-500175_162-4218874.html it took place in Alligator Point, FL - which is kind of cool because that's where we usually go to the beach. i've seen bears in the area before but they usually stay in the woods (you'll see them crossing the road sometimes).

/Tallahassee resident.

You know, if you say "with photos and videos" that should mean video of the actual rescue, not video of pictures of the event.

Mock26, scroll down for the video interview with the rescuer. Guy's pretty humble. Most FWC officers I know are pretty cool -- and have zero tolerance for resource violators.

Two-day lobster season starts in Florida next Wednesday. In the Keys, we get 30,000 people coming down for it. For perspective, only about 71,000 or so of us live here. Most residents hate the so-called mini-season (the regular eight-month season starts Aug. 6) because the environment, few of the visitors for these two days respect it.

If you can't make sure the first farking sentence is correct, why even bother?

Oh_Enough_Already: 2009 called, said thanks for reposting the story, but that bear died of old age nearly 4 years ago already.

Huh. "July 1, 2008" so apparently you are right. I came here to say how amazing this story was so thanks for completely ruining it for me, jerk!

I did watch the video.  But, there is no video of the actual rescue and when I see "pictures and video" I expect video of the incident.

you could use the hero, dumbass, scary, strange, weird and Florida tags-

/glad he "saved" the bear, too bad they doped him so close to the water in the first place

Yikes.  In my defense, Treehugger tweeted it today.  Jerks.

I never saw it before and wouldn't have noticed the date.  It was still a good story.  Why don't you go pick on some troll, instead?

New to me, too. Sometimes I notice a date on a link but not as a general rule.
