From the linked article...
Gatiss joins fellow season 4 newcomer Pedro Pascal, who will play the key role of Prince Oberyn "The Red Viper" Martell.

GoT, Doctor Who, and Sherlock are 3 of my all time favorite shows. Gatiss is a very talented guy. He plays a great Mycroft and writes some nifty scripts.

I'm happy to see him getting more work and recognition.

it's made by the BBC, who are funded by the British people. Want to watch TV? You need a TV Licence. Where does the money for the licence go? The BBC. Also, we don't feel the need to produce sprawling 22 episode series. Most sitcoms get 6 episode runs, Dr Who goes to maybe 8-10 a year and the specials.

It's not like Martin Freeman hasn't been busy as well.
IIRC, Big Finish even had scheduling issues with 7th Doctor stories because Sylvester McCoy has been in New Zealand for the Hobbit movie.
And it's not like Radagast has that much screen time compared to Bilbo.

Who has been pretty consistent at 13 episodes until this past season, which was split into 6 and 8 and a couple specials because they skipped a year's worth of production.

The funny thing, though, is that Doctor Who is the BBC's biggest moneymaker worldwide, and spreading a year's worth of episodes out over two years cost them a lot.

Because its all written by Gatiss and Moffet together and no one else. That means that it keeps its signature feel and in this case the quality but at the expense of volume as both men have other comitments.

In British TV the creators/writers do it all and very rarly get in outside help unlike American TV where the same journymen write episodes under the supervision of the creator.

They're all busy men. Gatiss and Moffat write Sherlock and run (and also write) for Doctor Who. Just the writing is time consuming. Cumberbatch is in just about every other movie coming out in the next six months, and Freeman is working a lot, too. It's a supremely talented bunch of people.

I know they want to do a series 4 of Sherlock, but FSM only knows when the stars will align perfectly enough to make that scheduling possible.

For one, Sherlock's episodes are 90 minutes long, so you're getting a feature-length movie each time out.  That can't be filmed in a day.  Two, UK programming doesn't need the metric assload of episodes shiatty US programming does.  They'd rather film less episodes that are great, than more episodes that end up sucking chrome at the end.  Three, everyone involved in the production of Sherlock has a bajillion other things on their plate, from movies to other TV shows, and so filming has to be worked around everyone's schedules.

I'd rather get three awesome, movie-length episodes, than 22 steaming 30-minute turds.

My first thought was that Euron couldn't be combined with any of the uncles cause their characters are just way too different, but this actually makes a lot of sense.  Not sure who else he could be except for maybe Doran Martell, since Oberyn has already been cast and there's not too many main players left to be introduced in season 4 that I can think of.

Who else? Certainly not either of the rangers killed in the opening sequence, if that's what you're implying? Or are you saying Coldhands is Benjen Stark? Either case is pretty thoroughly debunked, Coldhands is way too old to be any of the above. Or at least he's implied to be, maybe book 6 will have more to say on who he is.

Actually, Sherlock was originally shot as a one-hour weekly drama (the pilot is out there if you know where to look); it was decided by powers that be that it was terrible (it was).  Moffatt was given a much bigger budget and the project turned into three 90 minute movies a series rather than ten or twelve mediocre weekly episodes.

F42: Confabulat: New High Septon?

A winner is you

Oh wait except for you, hey I haven't refreshed in awhile. Anyway to expound, he's got to be a King's Landing sort, he's not Dornish or anything. And he's prissy and kind of a dick. Who else could he be?

RevMercutio: caddisfly: Can someone please explain why Sherlock only produces three episodes per year?  I'm guessing it's Cumberbatch's filming schedule, but I find it amazing that such a highly rated show isn't being produced full throttle.

Actually, I'd think Martin Freeman's schedule was more of a hassle. How long did The Hobbit film?

Peter Jackson wanted Martin Freeman so badly they delayed the filming of The Hobbit to work around his Series 2 Sherlock filming schedule.

Yeah that's right, they put a billion dollar movie franchise on hold for a BBC drama.  I wonder what the conversations with the studio were like.

Peter Jackson: you made several billion dollars off of the LotR films.  Every decision I made on that project was correct, including firing a lead actor the week shooting started (Stuart Townsend, FTL).  I want to work with Martin Freeman, but he's busy filming something else.  We'll shoot around him, doing Second, Third and Fourth Unit filming until he's free, as we've done with other actors in the past. Our shooting schedule is six months long, so a few days or weeks won't make any difference; we'll come in on time and under budget.

Studio Exec: Um, okay.

Pretty much like that.

They should get Shearsmith in the show.

Has League of Gentleman ever actuallly run here in the States? The last season was one of the single best sketch comedy shows ever constructed.

tlchwi02: js34603: I don't think they can combine Euron and Victarion, too much story left between them

yeah but all the stuff between them was the stuff about the iron islands... yeah, it was interesting and the characters were cool but it does nothing to advance the overall story. the tv show is looking for space to cut, that's the first thing from book 4 I think of.

Agreed.  There are already way too many characters on the show as it is.  The last thing we need is to be subjected to is the political intrigues of the Iron Islands.  Combine Euron and Victarion (skip Damphair), mention how Theon's absence makes Euron king and just and be done with it.

This argument reminds me of the "one sausage versus a package of 12 wieners made from lips, anuses and Mexican lung butter" hypothesis.

Since you were asking about this, the new season of Sherlock airs in the UK starting on November 24th.

Yeah, Euron's horn from Valyria, Victarion sailing to try to claim Dany, and the Ironborn raiding towards Highgarden causing discord between the Lannisters and Tyrells, all of that does nothing to move various plots forward. Unless they're planning to drastically change where various plot elements are going you can't cut the Iron Islands(at least not entirely) any more than you can Dorne, which is the other thing people keep saying they'd like to see cut.

There are aspects of it you could cut(The entire chapter of Asha trying to rally her other uncle and his banners, and all the stuff with her entourage), but dropping it entirely or merging Euron and Victarion goes a bit far I think.

/Books 4 and 5 are a much better read when you combine them in chronological order

Elzar: devilEther: May there be many instances of this in his scripts:
[Daenerys disrobes]

Meh - her knees are way, way too sharp

breasts are way, way too perky

FTFY.
