You know I just realized today that the entire concept of a legal same sex marriage is really still in its infancy.  Netherlands in 2001 was the first, now there are over a dozen and 1/5 of the states here.  Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see it legal EVERYWHERE right NOW, but that is a remarkable amount of progress in a short time.

Cheers to those in the UK who enjoy their new-found equality./now come on PA.  Our AG not defending our version of DOMA is a good start.

Unless you're playing CoD, you really don't hear as much bad-mouthing of gays as you used to. It's almost as if the closet needs to be filled by somebody. When the homosexuals started coming out, the homophobes were sucked in.

Progressive or just a realist? Either is OK just curious which. Would be stupid to waste funds defending something already held unconstitutional but I could see some conservative AG's doing so anyway.

but then again.. gay relationships didn't exactly start in 2001 so you figure once marriage gets commonly accepted as a social/civil issue in a few modern countries the rest aren't too far behind.

I didn't realize, until I Googled it, that a British monarch hasn't withheld assent from (i.e., vetoed) an Act of Parliament since 1708. I knew it was rare, but I thought there were at least a few times it had happened. Which, I suppose, would have meant that dragging it out just for this would have been the greatest anti-gay troll since Sodom. Then again, for the same reason,  not withholding assent maybe isn't such a big goddamn deal that she should be getting all this credit for. But I'm a 'Murikan, so what do I know.

Of course, I doubt the Queen cares much about homosexuality at all, as long as her heirs are not performing it live on the BBC.

Cameron may be an elitist dick, but in this case I applaud him for pushing this though in the face of opposition from some in his party.

I'd assume that such an act would require an amazingly good reason and that most cases where one would exist are handled before it gets to that point.

Haven't you heard? The reason progressive ideas become mainstream is that those who hold the old ideas die out. My guess is that they will never come out and their corpses will continue to fill the void. Didn't you see Orson Scott Cards statement that basically says, "You won, now leave me alone to wallow in my hatred and defeat."

It's what the Fark homophobes already seem to be doing today, since I don't see any in this thread.
