(Atlas Obscura)   There's a seven bedroom mansion in one of the nicest gated communities in San Diego available for a mere $668,000. Whenever you hear of a real estate deal that good, there's always a catch. And boy is there a catch. D'oh   (atlasobscura.com) divider line 150

Are you kidding me? That's a deal. I'd buy that if I was American. Why do people care about stuff that happened previously in the house?

Hell I might buy it anyway.

I probably should have finished reading before commenting...

Meh.  I'd buy it.  it's not like there would be any downside to it, and if I ever got bored of living there, I could cook-up a cockamamie story about it being haunted in order to get out of my mortgage, and make tons of money off the book and movie deal.

2013-07-17 08:17:27 AM
Well if it was bulldozed, and the street name changed, why does it even matter? It's a totally different house. Someone buy it!

I'm not seeing the issue. Maybe if they had raped and murdered a bunch of school kids or something.

But it's NOT available.
The neighbors pooled their resources, bought the place, and bulldozed it.  This isn't an article, it's a trivia tidbit.

I'm closing on a house possibly this week whose original (now dead) builder and owner was long suspected as a prime suspect in the unsolved murder of an entire family, including 4 children, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Technically, the United States was built on an ancient Indian burial ground, so if any of that haunting shiat was true, you'd already be dealing with it.

I say Nice Price!

I think I could live with that.  I'd start floating baloons with glowsticks out of the back yard every few months to see if I could start internet rumors of UFOs circling it.

It might get a little annoying having groups of slack-jawed weirdos traipsing through the neighborhood and taking pictures of your house.

But according to Zillow the home is actually 4.6 million.

it's the Heavean's Gate suicide house... so?

Some fresh paint, some new carpeting .. I don't see a problem here as long as there are no lingering dead people odors.

Your grass is 1/4" too tall. $200 fine.

I'm not clear on this point: Did the neighbors buy it for $668,000, bulldoze it to the ground, and its off the market now, or did they build a new house on the site and now they're trying to sell it?

2013-07-17 09:29:58 AM
You could turn it into a museum and recoup the price in no time.

One of our properties is an old farmhouse with a lot of land, we bought it from an old widow who was headed of for retirement in the caribbean, her husband died in the house and we found out later he is supposedly buried somewhere on the property but we have no idea where...

I closed on a house this past week -- (first home, TX, only paid 105k, still very nice)

This is all that was left by the previous owner:  imageshack.us

Nope, didn't keep them, as it would be creepy fapping to some low grade soft porn that some other dude cranked it to.

Did they bulldoze the place or not? Because if you're creeped out about the land that your new house was built on being the place where a bunch of people once died, you should probably work towards getting over it. People have died pretty much everywhere at some point in human history. And these folks went peacefully, calmly, and willingly. Weird, yes. But not anything like a horrible violent death.

Free burgular alarm.  It's a win/win.

Just to fark with the neighbors.

2013-07-17 09:37:09 AM
Hell, if I had the money I'd buy it.  If it was haunted, even better!  I'd set up webcams and charge membership to watch them.

The neighbors bought it for the low, low price of $668K and bulldozed it.

2013-07-17 09:42:36 AM
According to the article, it's not even the same house: that was bulldozed.  Who the hell cares that it's on the same plot of land where something bad happened?  My guess is that after ~10k years of human history there's not a square inch of this planet that hasn't had something horrific happen on it

Seriously, if I'm going to buy a house like this I want something really gory.  "Well, the crown moulding is lovely and the pool is just perfect.  But do you have any former cult houses where it was really gory and bizarre?  Booze and pills seems kind of lazy.  I was really hoping for something more violent."
