That is a perfectly practical plane.  With a dunderhead of a pilot.

You may be referring to large commercial aircraft.  Of course, this could never happen to them:

Not that model. You have two choices: full (25 gal) or "to the tabs" (17 gal). Subtract a gallon as unusable.

and if it was late and he didnt have a flashlight, he could have used a lighter or a match---best thing to use to check the tanks.
