A gun recovered from the scene and no suspected foul play usually makes the default assumption suicide.  With a hit the organization in question usually wants other people related to their interests to  know it's a hit, meaning the cops can usually figure it out too.

In a way, this incident vindicates such measures. Clearly, the judge experienced a reasonable fear of imminent grievous bodily injury or death, and so he used deadly force against the aggressor who created that fear. While he was evidently unsuccessful, as is evident by his success, his death demonstrates that his fear, and his attempted use of deadly force in response to that fear, was legally justified.
