Those smokestacks did not fall straight down. Clearly this was not a controlled demolition.

I think we need to conserve some smokestacks. Unless they're impeding development they're classic landmarks on the skyline.

There were a couple of really big ones in El Paso at the old ASARCO smelter that were assploded a couple of months back. I haven't lived in this area long, but I did get used to seeing them when I drove to El Paso on I-10. Apparently there was a Save the Stacks group that really wanted them to stay, and they were given a couple of years to come up with the money to preserve them, but didn't.

Anyway, at least they tried. I would have liked to see the demo live, but wasn't driving the 40 minutes down there at O dark Thirty to see a 6am show that was going to last a minute and a half.

/You can google ASARCO demo for video
//Only 2 stacks
///Seems like the big one may have been taller than these though at 863'

"formally quiet neighborhood"? Good. I like structure and politeness.

Pretty expensive to do since they have to be used in order to keep from crumbling.

There are some worth saving: the Battersea power plant in London (famous from the cover for Pink Floyd's Animals) is landmarked, and there was an excellent Art Deco stack in the Pennsy yards here in Philly which Amtrack just took down for no other reason than that they could get the money for demolition.

&L did the same thing a couple of years ago at their plant up 95 in Sharpes across from the Space Center.

I thought there was something I was missing.

woah, I used to drive by that thing everyday on I-595.

and subsequently so did my parents as I grew up down there.

it was definitely part of the skyline....

it will not be missed.

And nobody found ANY airplane parts in the wreckage!

I once suggested we take down a sign by flying a model airplane into it. I was shot down because we didn't want to destroy the CVS across the street
