"a work of fiction with a dubious imagination, awful acting, and a story that is non-existent"

I think that's what we call "faithful to the original."

The film is a Chinese version of "chick flick" minus the emotional engagement and relationship-based social realism that typically are associated with the Hollywood genre.

I don't know what chick flicks they've been watching.

So it's no worse than the western version.

No kidding. The BBC production of 'Bleak House' was not a chick flick.

FTFA:  The hit movie portrays Shanghaiese women as shallow, vapid, and beholden to bad men. So much for gender equality.

Swap Shanghai for New York, and I actually thought that that was pretty much Sex and the CIty. Except when the Vamp from the Nescafe Gold Blend ads became a lesbian for a bit, so she was no longer beholden to bad men but rather preferred to be holden to boobies.

Or maybe they confused Sex and the City with Thelma and Louise... because, you know, of that episode where Carrie goes on a cross-country crime spree following a brutal, attempted rape of Charlotte where Mr Big gets shot.

Modern China itself is an un-ironic rip-off, first of Stalinism, then of unrestrained crony capitalism with a totalitarian twist.

But don't call them "capitalist", it's "socialism with Chinese characteristics".

Carrie Bradshaw is the most odious, least sympathetic character in television history. I'm surprised Chinese officials didn't watch the DVDs and demand immediate payment of our debts, seize Hawaii and nuke Los Angeles.

FTA: At first glance, Tiny Times might be mistaken for a Sinicized Sex and the City, but soon it becomes clear that the four boy-crazed, mall-loitering characters in Shanghai have little in common with the fiercely independent career women in Candace Bushnell's New York.

good to know we don't have a monopoly on bad movies.

i also don't understand why white people need to think foreign movies are all art films.

i love it when Fark's editor shiats the bed

For clarity:

1 is basically a housewife desperate for a man and a baby
1 is a man crazy lady with a blog
1 is a man crazy lady who does in fact have a career, but it rarely comes up
1 is a fiercely independent career women - she is usually referred to, even by fans, as "the biatch"

That's a common stereotype in China about Shanghai chicks.

Because most of the major production studios are American, which means that stuff getting 'imported' is either Indy films for pretentious asses, or horrible B grade stuff?

There's a lot of (uh, what's the right word? Ethnic sounds racist as fark) movies from Bollywood or other regional film centers that don't come to America because they wouldn't make sense, wouldn't get played, etc. films like this are great examples.

It is interesting the correlation between 60+ years of communism and the stifling of free thought and expression and the current impact on their ability to produce anything original.

Based on the descriptions of the show in these posts, I guess I should be glad I have never watched the show.  It sounds rather unappealing.

As opposed to Hollywood, which has had a century of (nominally) free thought and expression, and which produces anything original only when every other option has failed?

I prefer "chicks flicking chicks" flicks.

That would be a great series, actually, especially if they embraced the cross section of society drag allows. You could have a closeted blue color guy who is secretly a Grand Dame, a minority cast member involved in gangs who "accidentally" seduces a cop or something, a rich old dude who hags around and justifies going to exotic locations, and a boring view point guy in a dead end white collar job who spends his entire time at work designing outfits.

The plot structure of "Sex and the City" is identical to the structure of "Gilligan's Island." Someone (e.g. a new boyfriend or the Harlem Globetrotters) shows up, gives our heroes the illusion that escape (from the island or from single-ness) is near only for it to all collapse at the last minute.

/Better clothes on Sex and the City, but even Carrie wouldn't pack her best stuff for a three hour tour

Commie art movies art pretty predictable. Lots of odd obscure symbolism to amount to "the government is bad, but I have to make this statement in a way the politburo won't understand."
