Also, you can set your own autocorrect rules.  If this is really a big deal to you, you can go and make sure all your abortion texts are easier to type!

The point is, Apple shouldn't be acting as the morality police.  They shouldn't be deciding "Hey, you know what, this word offends some people, so instead of letting our customers make rational, sane choices such as using the tools to edit their own auto-corrects to remove words that they don't want, we're going to choose FOR them!"  That's the kind of thing you do for your 8 year old kid... take all the bad choices out of the picture so he can't make them, because you are the parent and they are the child.  Which, historically speaking, is exactly how Apple acts... like an overprotective helicopter mom, constantly hovering over her precious walled garden and trimming anything she thinks might offend away.

Personally I like it. I'm rubbish at typing on a touch screen (HTC for those that care) so I'm glad my phone doesn't correct my mistakes to words that could cause me embarrassment.

Can't you just edit your autocorrect to not include those words?  I mean, I can't think of more than about 10-15 words that would be offensive enough to worry about outside of super-professional business communications... and then what the hell are you using TEXTS for in that case.

As for me... Don't own a smartphone.   I have enough trouble staying off the computer as it is, if I had a miniature computer in my pocket I'd literally never get anything done at all.  Plus, I hate cellphones in general, so me having a little throwaway phone that does nothing but calls and texts is plenty for me.

You certainly have a strong opinionated narrative about a smartphone company for someone who doesn't have a smartphone.

I dislike them because of what they represent.  A walled garden that sets up a division in the computing market.  Considering I've got a BS in comp sci and a desire to start trying to code for a living, I hate having an entire segment of the market basically walled off and devs for that area told to bend over and submit to corporate buttfarking if they want to access it.  I also despise Apple's OS, as it's a backwards throwback that does less than any other OS on the market and has no real reason to exist other than to treat it's own customers like children.  Macs have less software compatibility than Windows, less tuning capacity than Linux, and can't be upgraded to actually match either one.  Linux has a purpose since it's so tunable it's often the backbone for custom hardware, and Windows runs just about everything so it's the general go-to, but what purpose does Mac have?  No practical one, and I hate the Apple mindset of style over substance.

Smartphones are just an extension of their business, and I want their entire business to fail and Apple to vanish from existence, and the sooner the better.

You sound oppressed.

By Apple, with products he apparently doesn't even own

I just tried it on mine.  It auto-corrected "abortion" to "women's health."

By BS you obviously mean bullshiat because if you had a single inkling about comp sci you'd actually be waving a little Apple flag and tanking fark that someone, somewhere actually makes a UNIX workstation that works and doesn't cost some stupid amount of cash just because its certified *NIX compatible by all the appropriate people.   That you don't seem to understand that OS X shows it's BSD heritage at every available opportunity strongly suggests you're wearing little boy shorts and riding the hate train with a sign saying "I'm retarded.  Look at me."   You even miss the fact that iOS shows it's OS X heritage and thus it's BSD-ness with only minor provoking.

And considering I've never actually heard people gush over Eclipse but will happily over XCode makes me think you haven't written any code beyond 10 print "LOL" so your opinions are utterly invalid.

Go back to reddit where drivel like you just posted gets people fapping as the hate train toots along.  Because frankly it's old, it's tired and you show yourself to be little more than a child who's never actually touched a Mac in their life; you probably think MBP's have 3 USB ports or some other bullshiat you read on some blog so it must be true.  You probably think you can't upgrade Macs.

When you can afford the iOS developer license without pestering your mommy feel free to come back.

Elsewhere in the thread I gave my reasons for disliking Apple.  I don't like their mindset, I don't like their business practices, and I see them making a mistake that they made 20 years ago all over again, and hurting the computing market in the process.  Then again, this is Fark, and 'ftfy' replies are about 35% of the volume of posts, so I figured I'd start with something familiar.

Esc7: 1000 Ways to Dye: Other phones do this too. It's largely to prevent you from accidentally autocorrect something offensive, say, accidentally telling your mom about the abortion you saw, rather than the apparition you thought you saw.

Or, misspelling aunt and it actually coming out the C word.

As a programmer:  SUPER THIS!!!

Auto correct != spellcheck.  People think its the same but it definitely is not.  Spellcheck exists in situations where you are composing larger chunks of text with an accurate input device that you (hopefully) review and transfer very asynchronously.

Autocorrect instead is modifying small amounts of text in real time near synchronous situations.  It does it automatically, without prompting.

Apple probably has a big ole list of words it never wants to automatically shove into someone's conversation.  Probably all swear words, all slurs, every offensive word they could think of, as well as every hot button word.

Abortion was probably added after all the political talk flared about it this year.  Some engineer at Apple decided to validate his existence by adding words to the list.  It's probably like the no-fly terror list, it just grows to prove people are doing something.

And if anyone is crying "censorship" over an algorithm not shoving the word abortion into their texts they really need to gain some perspective.

Also, you can set your own autocorrect rules.  If this is really a big deal to you, you can go and make sure all your abortion texts are easier to type!

Wow... you just went on a long rant because you have poor reading comprehension...  they tried SPELL CHECK!!!!!!

"We noticed that iOS never autocorrected this word when we misspelt it, and when we would double-tap the word to get spelling suggestions, the correctly spelt word was never an option."

THAT'S SPELL CHECK!!!!!!
