I call shenanigans. Just ask The English Major about his abortion flowers.

But it will fill in 'abortive' and 'abortifacients'.

It's "abortiommm".  9/10 women's Yoga of choice.

This is news? It's common knowledge that the ducking aunts at Apple can't get spell check right.

Other phones do this too. It's largely to prevent you from accidentally autocorrect something offensive, say, accidentally telling your mom about the abortion you saw, rather than the apparition you thought you saw.

Or, misspelling aunt and it actually coming out the C word.

As a programmer:  SUPER THIS!!!

Auto correct != spellcheck.  People think its the same but it definitely is not.  Spellcheck exists in situations where you are composing larger chunks of text with an accurate input device that you (hopefully) review and transfer very asynchronously.

Autocorrect instead is modifying small amounts of text in real time near synchronous situations.  It does it automatically, without prompting.

Apple probably has a big ole list of words it never wants to automatically shove into someone's conversation.  Probably all swear words, all slurs, every offensive word they could think of, as well as every hot button word.

Abortion was probably added after all the political talk flared about it this year.  Some engineer at Apple decided to validate his existence by adding words to the list.  It's probably like the no-fly terror list, it just grows to prove people are doing something.

And if anyone is crying "censorship" over an algorithm not shoving the word abortion into their texts they really need to gain some perspective.

Also, you can set your own autocorrect rules.  If this is really a big deal to you, you can go and make sure all your abortion texts are easier to type!

Holy shiat, you guys. We found the first person in history to never make a typo when using his phone. Every word he's ever entered has been done flawlessly. All bow down to he who has never hit 'm' instead of 'n'. You truly are better than all of us.

Anyway, I just tried this on my phone, typed in "abortiom" and it did not suggest any corrections. I did not send that text (obviously), but when I erased the word and started to type it again, it gave me "abortiom" as the autocomplete suggestion! My intentionally misspelled word, which I never sent, is now in my iPhone's dictionary.

The point is, Apple shouldn't be acting as the morality police.  They shouldn't be deciding "Hey, you know what, this word offends some people, so instead of letting our customers make rational, sane choices such as using the tools to edit their own auto-corrects to remove words that they don't want, we're going to choose FOR them!"  That's the kind of thing you do for your 8 year old kid... take all the bad choices out of the picture so he can't make them, because you are the parent and they are the child.  Which, historically speaking, is exactly how Apple acts... like an overprotective helicopter mom, constantly hovering over her precious walled garden and trimming anything she thinks might offend away.

Personally I like it. I'm rubbish at typing on a touch screen (HTC for those that care) so I'm glad my phone doesn't correct my mistakes to words that could cause me embarrassment.

I guess life is just no longer worth living. Yes, I've made plenty of typos. I just don't feel victimized if spellchecker didn't catch it.

Don't know about the GPLv3 but you'll often find similar clauses tucked in to most hardware from American companies.  It's just a legal boiler plate and can be all but ignored if you're not an American.

Besides when ebay is filled with 2nd hand servers and people willing to ship them around the world I fail to see why you'd use your iDevice for weapons testing simulations.

Can't you just edit your autocorrect to not include those words?  I mean, I can't think of more than about 10-15 words that would be offensive enough to worry about outside of super-professional business communications... and then what the hell are you using TEXTS for in that case.

As for me... Don't own a smartphone.   I have enough trouble staying off the computer as it is, if I had a miniature computer in my pocket I'd literally never get anything done at all.  Plus, I hate cellphones in general, so me having a little throwaway phone that does nothing but calls and texts is plenty for me.

Can't speak for all of them, but on my Samsung, you can't change the built-in dictionary list, but you can add words of your own.  By default, the phone didn't recognize or correct any cuss words.  Mine does now though, and it definitely makes for some humorous Tourrette's auto-correct suggestions.
