He should have just got one of these. Problem is, You have to fill them with water so the tubular pad gets wet, then you have to drive about 90 mph to really feel any cool air in your car.

And how do they run these things off of a 12v system? No way there's enough amperage to power that thing. Is the generator sticking out the other window?

I guess it depends how big his alternator is.  If that's a 1200W air conditioner then it needs 1200W/12v = 100 amps.  A generic Ford Explorer alternator is rated for 130 amps, so he'd have enough to run it, but he'd probably run out of juice once he started turning on other components in the car  Of course, he could have thrown in something ridiculous to provide the power.

you know, I kind of thought so also, and then I thought that this current article was just a rehash of a widely spread photo, but upon closer inspection you can see the lettering on the tire in the last photo (not visible in the article's photo, but that could also be just angle)

but also, in the article's photo, there is a black towel under the a/c unit, in the bottom photo of my set, there is no black towel (appears to be a white towel folded up tight). and there is differing amounts of 'filter clog'

however, apparently the last 2 photos in my set are the same vehicle, just with the a/c on different sides... and I wouldn't be surprised if it actually is the same car/owner who has done this before and does it every summer, and then someone snaps a photo and it makes it rounds again.

Non-electrical. They have a small hole you put the water into. There's a string near the vent area that you pull, to turn the tubular tube water pad inside. You have to soak it pretty good. Then you drive, air goes in thru the pads and into the car.

Like I said earlier, you have to be going pretty fast to feel the air. All your windows have to be up. It's OK for days that are 85° and you just want to cool off. I used to put ice water into mine, but it only goes so far. Especially when it's 100 degrees in the shade. The oldie Lowrider guys love them. When I had mine, I had people asking me if it was a mailbox, lol. Some people thought it was some WW2 car cannon.

It was fun for awhile. But IMO, It just looks too clunky on the side of something with beautiful lines of a 1940's vehicle. Tends to be distracting.

CSB alert...  Growing up, we had a '64 Dodge Coronet that had an after-market dealer-installed AC unit that my parents had had installed sometime around 1970.  It was a big beast of a thing that rode on the hump under the dash, and it took up legroom in the front seat on both sides.  And it's not like we lived in the tropics; we were in suburban Minneapolis, but that thing put out so much cold air that was so cold it would frost the interior of the windows in August, thus confirming the CSB.

This guy put one on this nice 1961 or 62 (I think) Corvair wagon, which looks pretty cool. You can see the pull string I mentioned hanging down, just inside the window. In the bottom pic, he's putting water into the cooler.

He he he!!! I realized after I posted that... I was rather unclear. Then I was wondering if you were actually going to answer me. For the record... I was asking about the AC in TFA. I appreciate you taking your time to answer my rather stupid unintended question... but I am actually familiar with those evap coolers. I don't have anything near as old and cool as his... but my dad collects War era Cadillacs.

And for my clarity... is that a Cadillac or a Fleetline? (And please don't embarrass the shiat out of me and tell me it's a Ford).

That is a gorgeous ride.

The g/f and I used to have a running gag about this Halloween pumpkin we bought that was so big that we had to put it in the passenger seat and put a seatbelt on it. We had this visual of it getting into an accident and flying out through the windshield like a crash test dummy, then sailing across the intersection.

I'm picturing the A/C unit doing something similar.

I've met plenty of rednecks and I can assure you they would use the whole thing.  The New Yorkers wouldn't even know where to start on mangling a car into this mess.  They would be googling "car install window AC".  C'mon, we all know it.

Costco was selling a portable swamp cooler a few years ago.  Was on wheels and came with enough collapsing ducting that the exhaust and/or intake could reach a window up to 25 feet away.  I almost picked it up.  Tons of possible uses for it.

Also it would look way less ghetto than putting an AC unit out your car window.  And less illegal.

I got one of those for my attic office - they are fan-farking-tastic.  They are also horrendously inefficient.  Still, it's nice to be able to move it around to rooms where we need the extra cooling.  Extra bonus for adding extra cooling in the pool house on super hot days.

Maybe it's a conehead's truck. When they shoot on location around the city, these guys show up the day before and are in charge of blocking off whole blocks of parking spots for all the location trucks. You'll see them sitting in their car with a big stack of cones next to them that they'll leave in freed up spots so they can reserve it for the production.

I'm seeing a few cones, just sayin'.

Everyone can calm down.  We have a very old house and property.  The "pool house" is a term I use to church up the building people use to change into their swimming gear.  It was a smokehouse/cooking shed for the property for about 140 years and we turned it into a "pool house" by installing steel rods to hang towels inside it.  The plumbing is a shower we hooked up to the well pump.  It's just a place to change near the pool.  It has a tin roof with tar paint and gets really REALLY farking hot in the summer, so I'll move the portable air conditioner into it just so the kids don't burn themselves.

From the outside, the "pool house" looks like a 140 year old clapboard outbuilding, which is exactly what it is.  If anyone has seen "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil" - the pool house is like the "summer home."  No one in their right mind would live in my pool house, not even Kato Kaelin.  You need a California pool house for that.

Wow - I thought it was a joke.  If he cared about the environment he'd tell them to get used to the farking heat.  If they're staying with the car anyway, they can roll down the windows and put a shade in the windshield.  You'd be amazed at how effective that is.

I've lived places that were hotter and more humid than NYC.

If it's still too hot for him, get a portable tent so his fleet of gas guzzling black SUVs can sit in the shade.  Someone might also want to mention to him that black cars absorb more heat than a light colored car.

And why the hell are his SUVs considered emergency vehicles?  In case there's a threat on his life and he has to leave i a hurry?   Yeah, good luck getting those AC units off while trying to make a quick getaway (even if they just abandon them in the street.

Not white, but I can pass for white or my real ethnicity and b/c of this I have experienced first hand racism directed at me b/c someone mistakes me for white.

I have experience verbal, emotional and physical violence when these people with whom I worked thought I was white and have seen instant change in this behavior when they hear my name and realize I am not white.

I have seen how clever these racists are, how sly they go about their attacks. I have come to understand that they will not show this behavior to whites in positions of power, they attack those without power.  That would be the lesser educated whites, those who may have come from those families that would be categorized as "rednecks".

Having experienced racism from non-whites and having looked at the facts presented in the case I feel that Trayvon did commit a hate crime.

I don't think having a divergent opinion to the status quo that says whites cannot be victims of racism would warrant labeling me a "white supremest" I.E. a  racist.  In fact I believe that dealing with and overcoming ones biases, fears, hates is empowering in the long run and therefore making issue of racism by blacks will empower blacks.

If Trayvon had been told a long time ago and even told that day that he died , that using the word "cracker" to describe someone who is not the same race as yourself is racistTrayvon would be alive today.

Racism killed Trayvon  but it was his own racism that led to his demise.

The time is now to stand up to black racism and hate crimes committed by blacks.

Would you shame people who ridiculed Hitler too?

You're farking insane. Ignored.

I would say that is either Name Calling or an Ad Hominem attack.  I am feeling generous so I will credit you with the latter.

Graham's Hierarchy of Disagreement lists ad hominem as the second worst type of argument in a disagreement.

Sometimes the trolling is just so transparent you should probably just let it go.

I'm trying to go the route of shaming rather than engagement, but you're probably right anyway.

It is really a shame that people like you and too many others are ignoring the fact that Trayvon died while committing a hate crime.

The time is now to stand up to black racism and hate crimes committed by blacks.

Would you shame people who ridiculed Hitler too?

Tell us how you feel about affirmative action and the civil rights voting act,

Meh, so stick a hole in the door. The best way to go about it is with an inverter and a second alternator just to run the inverter.

Window AC units run on 120v AC.. cars have 12v DC.. you have to have either a generator or an inverter... to start the AC, you have to have minimum 3x running amps.. also, 8 amps of 120v from an inverter = 80-90 amps of 12v DC..  to start the AC, try close to 300 amp momentary load on the 12v DC system.. hell on batteries and alternators.....

You rule.

And how do they run these things off of a 12v system? No way there's enough amperage to power that thing. Is the generator sticking out the other window?

Those things only work in places with low humidity. Why? Because they work on evaporative cooling. High humidity= low evaporation of the water. They're an automotive swamp cooler. Arizona, California, New Mexico, etc. It's the same reason that 85 degrees and humid feels oppressive, but 95 degrees and dry doesn't feel as bad. Also, using ice water in them doesn't really do anything. Actually, it makes the water take a little longer to start evaporating, really!

Not sure how ambitious you are, but, you can make one of these for under $20. Personally, I used a foam cooler (Wal-mart for $7) but the principle is the same.

Here's the instructable, and God yes. It works really, really well.

Just to add, that unit goes in your car, and the fan is 12v and plugs into the dashboard. You fill the container with ice, the fan sucks warm air in, blow it on the ice, out comes cold air. Short synopsis.

cameroncrazy1984: Mock26: Self proclaimed environmental warrior, Mayor Bloomberg, uses a window AC unit mounted on a movable stand to cool down his vehicle before he gets into it.

Actually it's to cool down the vehicle without running the engine while his security detail sits inside it while the mayor is at a function.

Maybe you could've, I dunno, watched the video?

I did watch the video, and it is a bullschitt excuse.

I saw a rape van yesterday in Iowa City with an air conditioner sticking out the back.

Rape vans got no windows.

Gotta make sure the Snickers don't melt.

Wrong.  Just plain wrong.

Rednecks are usually quite proud of it, not offended.

Jeff Foxworthy has made a career based around "you may be a redneck" jokes.

There is a restaurant (several locations) in the DFW area called Redneck Heaven.  They were in the news recently because they had their waitresses wearing g-strings and body paint, with nothing else.  Personally, I suspect that the "complaints" came from the managers mother in a successful attempt to get a bunch of free advertising.

There is a modern song playing on country radio these days called "redneck crazy".  Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the song.

Jerry Jeff Walker made a song about "up agains the wall you redneck mother".  He recorded that in the early 70's, and it's still popular in honky tonks.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOI5H0n28qY
