With helpful photo of what a sock might look like. *rolls eyes*

Shouldn't have acted like they were hiding stuff. I was recently out of the US; no one in security looked at me twice. I could have been smuggling any number of things; but wasn't. If you start looking all shifty; that's when you bring the attention of security.

/ plus, smuggling pot over the border? Where they trying to get caught?

Of course he will never get it back.  The cops were real happy to find the $300k in his socks.

While a lot of money confiscation stories bother me, this isn't one of them.  The dude was hiding his money and didn't declare it, knowing damn well he was supposed to.

I feel kind of bad for the guy because losing out on about $128k cannot happen without consequence, but at the same time if you can't handle the consequences don't take the risks.

They will end up charging him for the 1 million worth of weed and 11k.

Which is why I always stick my hands in my pockets and whistle while going through security checkpoints.

During the ensuing pat down, the elder Rakigjija revealed that he "had money in his socks and that the money was for business expenses related to his bean export company.

That's what they're calling "pot smuggling" these days? Also, no matter what the denomination, $130K in your socks is going to be a hell of a wad against your ankles. The cops are bound to notice something.

It isn't illegal to bring lots of cash into the country (last I heard), but it is illegal to lie about it to the Customs agent.

His "import business"?

Yeah, right. What kind of import business requires you to go to another country to pick up $128K in cash?

A: The recreational pharmaceutical import business, of course!

It is illegal to bring $10,000 or more over the border without declaring it and filling out the necessary paperwork.

I never understood this, if it's legal to carry it, it shouldn't be any of their business.

"However, after the federal agent discovered a glass jar containing pot in a jacket on the vehicle's back seat, the Rakigjijas were escorted to a security office to be frisked."

So they were smart enough to hide the money but stupid enough to have drugs in a car crossing the border and be the reason why they were pulled over in the first place. No sympathy at all that they got busted. It's like those drug transporters driving too fast on the interstate and get pulled over, just to have the cops find drugs in the car.

Nothing. You fill out a form promising you aren't a terrorist or drug dealer and you're on your way.

As a person the frequently travels across State lines with a pretty fair amount of cash... I HATE hearing these forfeiture stories. But this dude is a dumbass. Sorry man... but your kid isn't going to college.

How do you go about declaring it if you're just crossing state lines in the USA on board a train or by car?

You don't have to declare it (Constitution says so at least). But if you get stopped in the middle of nowhere... a drug dog "hits" on your car... and they search it and find a bundle of cash (no set amount... just enough to be suspicious)... they will take it and you will only see it again after a loooooong court battle.

Google "Policing for profit".

The problem is that it is actually illegal to bring back large amounts of cash (over $10,000) from Mexico without declaring it. If you declare the money you have to fill out IRS forms and pay a tax on it.

No you don't. The Customs Declaration is reported to the IRS, but you are not automatically taxed on it. If your books jive that this is a legit payment to your business... it's the same as any other payment. IRS does nothing just because the you import the cash...

It's just 'barely' legal to even carry it. Try getting caught by a highway patrol, not even crossing a state line, while having 100k in your vehicle. You'll go though hell just to keep it out of the county treasury.

And one more thing...

Who's to say he didn't declare it, and the agents lied?

Oh that's right, we'll never know because a $20 uniform and a $.20 stamped steel badge means you can do what the fark you want and get away with it.
