Republicans want to end democracy.  There's really no other way to look at their recent history with respect to election law.

People are not people my friend, only corporations should be allowed to vote.

2013-07-16 01:58:05 PM
By securing their right to vote while stymieing other people's right to vote, they're actually increasing the value of a vote. It's simple supply and demand, people.

Is it possible the guy voted against it because of the problems he had with the specific provision that was struck down? Perhaps now that his major objection is out he's serious about updating things.

Actually you want to phrase it as "humans are not people; only corporations are legally defined as people".  Fun part is that with one action you erase pretty much all protections humans have under the Constitution.  Doesn't require Amendments, or even laws being passed - just one SCOTUS ruling, and that's that.

Of course! If you have more property/slaves than another, you are obviously a more intelligent and discerning man than him, so your opinions are more correct.

There were many proposals to fairly update the old criteria to assess which states required preclearance . . . and were blocked by Republicans.  So they renewed the Act with old criteria.

You know, I read David Brooks's column about the coup in Egypt, and I just laughed and laughed when I came to his paragraph about people who emphasize substance over process. He argued that the Muslim Brotherhood is rejecting pluralism, secularism, and modernity, and they are outright subverting democracy by their actions. Gee, where have I seen a large group of people that adamantly reject pluralism, secularism, and modernity? I dunno, maybe the Tea Party/Religious Right?

Uhh, democracy didn't trample slavery.  Democracy kept it alive.  Republican form of government enforcing an irrevocable union, against the will of democracy, kinda burned it all down (Well, in medical people terms, it would be 3rd degree burns on the lower 40% of the body with the genitals in Washington, D.C. spared).

This is exactly correct.  And is equally correct about the civil rights movement.  Democracy in the Southern States (i.e., "states' rights") allowed a majority of white citizens to pass laws to treat black people as second class citizens.  It was only in the 1950s with the "liberal activist" US Supreme Court overturning school segregation - and then Dwight Eisenhower sending in the 101st airborne - that kicked off the whole civil rights movement.

In the Southern U.S., "democracy" means the freedom to pass laws that benefit the white, christian majority by trampling the rights of minorities.

It's sad that there's a crazed right wing in this country that insists that we live in a post-racial society, and that racism is "cured."  You have to be insanely delusional to actually believe that.

Actually, there were more blacks in the South than whites when the first Jim Crow laws were passed. After Reconstruction ended, blacks were prevented from voting by violent vigilantes (and eventually by state law).  White's were the minority at the time (see Buckley's, "Why the South Must Prevail"). That's not exactly "democracy."

Yeah, no, I was being sarcastic, democracy wasn't really responsible for ending slavery, except in as much as South Carolina were whiny petulant douchebags about the results of a fair(except for minorities) and free(except for slaves) election.

No, liberals notice that states pushing voter ID laws also like to make it hard as fark for poor people and/or minorities to acquire them, usually by moving DMV offices farther away from districts with large poor/minority populations.

Oh sure! From the office on the other side of town that's open Tuesday through Friday from noon until 4:00 p.m., with a $40 processing fee unless you say you're indigent and fill out another form (that no one tells you about). And make sure you do it at least 30 days before the election to allow for processing time, and hope no one challenges you on it during the actual election, after you had to stand in line for seven hours at the one polling place in your district when the wealthier, whiter people had six...

Yeah, just one free little ID card that absolutely isn't a poll tax or designed to make voting harder for minorities.

I have news, Republicans. Young, college-educated white people are tired of your shiat. Working class white people are tired of your shiat. Retirees are tired of your shiat.

You are down to racists, religious nuts, tax dodgers and grifters. Your base is dying. You alienate and shut out any new demographic save pudgy college-age males who can't get laid so they invent stories about how they're secretly better than everyone else and try to score with chicks that are in to insecure, abusive men because "50 Shades of Grey" is the ultimate conservative romance novel for young Republican women. Your time is over.

Um.... Walk in freezers are "rooms".  So are some labs.

I know what you're saying, that there is no reason to mandate that for a clinic, but it's a bad example.
