Mr Kucherena said the fugitive had stated in the application that he faced possible torture and execution if he returned to the US.

Thanks, Cheney.

Yep. That gives it the veneer of credibility. And, of course, treason can lead to execution in most places in the world, so that's credible to begin with. I wonder if they intend to trade him for Adrich Ames.

If treason means giving comfort and aid to the enemy, does this mean that our own government considers us enemies?

2013-07-16 10:01:49 AM
The Snowden affair has to be one of the best examples of international trolling and counter-trolling that I've seen.

Time for a new bag of popcorn...

If I was in his shoes, I'd return to the US and face trial. (Torture and execution? Oh horseshiat. We only do that to radicalized Muslims.) After all, his cause is just and he's got a sound case. Right?

Yeah, I've seen this one before

Didn't I read last week that he stole enough information to basically destroy the NSA's ability to gather intelligence, and that the threat it will all be released if anything happens to him is his insurance against being disappeared by the US government?

Why the fark does he think he's safe in a country that would (possibly literally) kill to be able to do exactly that?

Well at least they used it to stop 9/11, so that's nice.

Bush-Cheney began illegal NSA spying before 9/11

Contradicting a statement by ex-vice president Dick Cheney on Sunday that warrantless domestic surveillance might have prevented 9/11, 2007 court records indicate that the Bush-Cheney administration began such surveillance at least 7 months prior to 9/11.

Sure, if he really exposed something unconstitutional then it should be an easy win in court.

I don't think you can apply for temporary asylum. He must just have applied for asylum (which is full), and then stated that he will treat it as temporary by leaving when possible.

2013-07-16 10:17:51 AM
So when he gives detailed NSA spying programs to the Russians in exchange for his asylum is he a traitor yet? Or is he still fighting against the oppressive American regime?

Well, he already has done that if they read the Guardian.

If you're naive enough to think that two quasi-dictatorship governments with strategic interests in knowing how the US foreign spy system works have offered Snowden shelter out of the goodness of their own hearts I've got a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.

That's because there isn't really any substance to what he has revealed.  He revealed a bit about HOW the NSA spied on terrorists and suspected terrorists, but everyone knew that it was being done.

When the "messenger" doesn't have a message there isn't much to focus on.

what does that mean? Of course I'm concerned. Does it keep me up at night? No. But when people bring it up I think that something should be done about it. I'd put it someone where between: not as concerned as the over fishing of Blue Tuna but more concerned than the the size restrictions Fark puts on image sizes.

I'd return and face trial once James Clapper is indicted for perjury. Otherwise, the US Justice System is just a kangaroo court.

No, some people read real news sources instead of blogs from activist organizations like the one you posted.

Those people know that he didn't reveal any illegal activity or wrongdoing.  He is only a hero to geek kids, conspiracy nuts and reporters who rely on leaks to make a living.
