Yeah but we have a whole lot of quality music to balance it out. Hell we invented jazz, blues, rock, country, house, hip hop, soul, RNB, funk, and some others I forgot just in the US alone. Then again, I don't know much about the Asian music scene, I just know everything I have heard was all weird poppy nonsense.

Haven't you ever heard of fun?  I don't look at them unless it's on youtube, otherwise it's on my mp3 player.  It's just fun to listen to, especially if you don't know the language.  Mindless?  Yep.  Guilty, but it's a nice break from Alice In Chains.

News flash:  The U.S., Japan and Korea all have deeply cynical music industries that manufacture images and sell them to the unwashed masses with all the value and quality of theater popcorn.  Under the boot of that is a teeming mass of untalented hacks with their heads so far up their own asses that they don't realize they're only a bad con job away from being the next Rebecca Black.  I don't make much of a distinction between Carly Rae Jepsen and Girls' Generation, at least on a talent level.  90% of everything is crap and Asian pop music is no exception.

If you want diamonds you're going to have to search the rough.  For every Tool experimenting with lyrical Fibonacci sequences there's an angela using vocal techniques so advanced you have to basically be pro to sing her songs at all*.  Even setting that aside, I once translated one of her songs (something I am very experienced at mind you) and after struggling with multiple meanings in the lyrics I realized I was looking at poetry.  Nothing legendary mind you, but certainly a cut above this:

And I was like baby, baby, baby oooh
Like baby, baby, baby nooo
Like baby, baby, baby oooh
I thought you'd always be mine
Baby, baby, baby oooh
Like baby, baby, baby nooo
Like baby, baby, baby oooh
I thought you'd always be mine

Even within industry there are some people who know what they're doing.  Kalafina is purely an industry creation, but only in the sense that they're basically a toy for Yuki Kajiura to play with and holy hot shiat dayum is she a talented composer.  I tried to make a few arrangements of her music (something I am also quite experienced at mind you) but I gave up because the instrumentation was too perfectly balanced to mess with.

*Not to say this would always be the case, but the only singer I personally know who is capable of covering angela's "Shangri La" is so ridiculously good herself she just signed her own professional contract.

Two things I know about Asians are they make a ton of bad disposable pop/dance music and they have a lot of virtuosos on violin, piano, etc. So where are the in-betweeners? Where's the Asian version of Queen?

2013-07-16 11:04:58 AM
leaving aside any debate about quality, Kpop has an over saturated market.  They are flooding the market with kpop groups and thinking that somehow an overabundance won't be an economic issue.  Kpop stars also take something like 400-600k to train and make presentable.  Although there is profit sharing the costs of choreography, costumes, investment in individual korean youths and so forth are all massive meaning the profit margin is very slim.  To try an recoup the losses they try to get the Kpop stars involved in acting and various shows to bring in more money.  Overall their business model is unsustainable with the costs taking up too much of the revenue.

Not really. A few years ago I got to shoot a Korean punk band that was performing in Tokyo and they complained that Korea's punk scene sucked because it was very, very small. Have heard similar from musician friends in the J-Punk scene who have performed in Korea.

A Korean former classmate of mine from language school does design work for a Korean TV station in Tokyo, mostly covering K-Pop stars. From what she's told me the alternative/indie scene in Korea is so small it might as well be a margin of error.

Queen were virtuosos, but while I disagree with your example, I agree with your thesis.

There are no middle of the road/long term survivors/county fair circuit bands in either the J-pop or K-pop

stars:  they stay around for a couple of years, then very publicly meet 'the man of their dreams' and have
a big send off retirement concert so they can live 'happily ever after' with them.

Shinhwa is a product of SM Entertainment (it's as K-Pop teen idol as you can get), and they've been around for 15 years, even past mandatory military service. They just released an album recently under their own label, and they're still tops on quite a few charts.

Kageyama Hironobu has been going strong since 1977
X Japan has been playing music since 1982.
Hamasaki Ayumi has been going since 1994
Amuro Namie has been going since 1992
Janne Da Arc / Acid Black Cherry has been going since 1996

Not every group or person has an expiration date.  Only teen idols.

Your Morning Musume, AKB48, CNBlue etc.  They are equivalent to New Kids on the Block, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, etc.  They aren't meant to be around forever.  Sometimes you get your Justin Timberlake Michael Jackson or Bobby Brown who can stick around longer than their boy/girl band origin, but the entire music scene isn't throw away, just certain facets.

Anyway, the point of a lot of recent K-pop is to enjoy watching Hyun-a, 2NE1, Girls Generation, etc music videos with the sound muted until a new girl group with a better set of legs comes around.  Then there are groups that will be around a bit longer like Akdong Musician.  It all depends on what you are looking for.
