Hi everyone -
A lot of you know me, and know that I don't solicit the internet for anything, but this is an extenuating circumstance that I am really hoping you will help with.

One of our own (kiwimoogle84) has hit a pretty hard patch financially -  and has a baby arriving in two weeks. I'm asking that we, as the amazing community we are, pitch in to help her in this trying time.
She emailed me this weekend with this:

"My situation has gotten dire. I'm two weeks from my scheduled induction date and we JUST got paid- it disappeared into the void of overdue cell phone bills, registration and a tune up on the car, utilities, fuel, my prescriptions, etc. We're basically broke right now.
The trouble is, there's still a lot of stuff we need for the baby.  We don't have enough bottles, a pump, a feeding pillow, a diaper bag, near enough diapers... I don't even have any sheets for her crib.
...and I got a collection call from my hospital yesterday. It's scary to be that deep in debt to a hospital, but still need their services. I have a balance of $5,295 to their ER dept. I've been making small payments as best I can but I have to finish paying my doctor her professional fee first before I can worry about the hospital, and that is from my first ER trip back from March that they're calling on- about $1850. And the financial office won't work with me until I'm done accruing debt. I know how this works- it's what I do for a living :)
I'll owe them $7200ish by the time kid's born. My max out of pocket on my insurance plan is $9k. Most I ever have to pay in a calendar year. Which is, you know, GREAT, if you get cancer or need a heart transplant. Not so great if you're just having a baby.
I'd be fine if I'd been working this whole time, but losing half my pay to disability just crippled us. Absolutely destroyed us. And with an insurance plan that says I owe 30% of each hospital visit... I've had four separate trips thanks to my high blood pressure, leaking protein from my kidneys, fainting spells, threatened miscarriages, false labor a few weeks ago when I was sick..."

I know that we as a community can rally around one of our own when things are tough. If any of you could see fit to contribute in any way, that would be really amazing. Holly has a baby registry at through Amazon with necessities that they're still missing:
http://www.amazon.com/registry/baby/3876F3FT7EVO2

As there are also big bills coming up with the hospital, if you can, please donate money to help offset those, anything would be most appreciated. Her PayPal account is kiwimoogle84[nospam-﹫-backwards]liamg*com

Again, if this wasn't a desperate situation I'd never ask Fark to help, but she's an awesome lady, and is doing everything she can to keep her head above water - and with a baby coming, that is looking more like drowning just now.

I have more information for anyone who wants it - EIP, call me, text me, whatever. I also have copies of her hospital bills, if you need additional proof that she's proper f*cked. Anything you can spare will be helpful.
I'm sure at least some of you can relate to the despair that comes with overwhelming debt. Please help!

Real good.

Ok.

2013-07-15 11:10:41 AM
I have no money to give, but she could look into Freecycle.org for free (they're literally not allowed to charge) baby supplies.

2013-07-15 11:11:00 AM
Wait. She's not a lurker, and neither are you.

something is fishy here...  i just can't put my finger in it.

2013-07-15 11:11:37 AM
OK

TFD has helped me out when I was desperate before. Now that I have a job, I'll gladly get her some stuff off the registry when I get home from work.

I'll be happy to help.

Y'all are good people. I know she'll appreciate anything at this point.

I've also met her IRL, she's pretty awesome.

2013-07-15 11:14:54 AM
If you guys have questions I'll be happy to answer them. This was suggested as a solution after everyone rallied around Vincent Blackshadow earlier in the year.

I'm asking for nothing from those who don't have it to spare, but even a little hope is getting me through right now.

Thanks for reading/ listening. It truly is appreciated.

There is a sheet set, a diaper genie, and some diapers on the way from Amazon.

Good luck, kiwi. Let me know if there is anything else I can do.

Definitely not a lurker, has been helpful in the past in trying to drum up support for others, and is a generally awesome individual working through a high risk pregnancy. I hope folks are able to support her one way or another!

2013-07-15 11:16:26 AM
I bought a few things off the registry. It's not much but it's all I can do. I hope it helps, Kiwi. Best of luck to you!

Good luck kiwi!! Also look on craigslist for baby items, somethings are OBO, and you can get a steal! (specifically for infant diapers that babies have outgrown)

I'll do what I can when I get home, but in the meantime my blood is boiling about your expenses. We've already talked about this, and I realize you're high risk, but a hospital is a business, they need to make $$ and lots of it. Make sure your birth plan is updated, don't get nickled and dimed! they'll charge you $20 for two Tylenol.

You should consider cloth diapers rather than spending so much money on disposable ones. A child will go through an average of 3500 or so diapers in the first year of its life.

You know, when I was an infant, I had the good manners of learning to use the toilet on my own first to save my parents the aggravation.

Tell her that after you deal with cloth diapers for a year with your own kid. We tried that with kid #2, it lasted 3 weeks. They stink!

Good luck with the kiddo, lady.

Or, if you go the route of disposables, both of my kids used the Target brand and we have never had any issues with leaking or anything like that and they are a fraction of the price of Huggies or Pampers.

Also, even if you plan on nursing, go to the Enfamil and Similac websites and sign up for free samples. We haven't spent a dime on formula with my son in the three months that he's been alive.

I'll look into that. And as far as the med expenses... It was bad luck that I ended up this sick. I could have handled it if I'd been working this whole time. I've put on a good face here but it's been pretty bad.

Fondle My Sweaters: Isn't this what baby showers are for?

Unfortunately I got a lot of clothes at my shower. Clothes aren't really what I need. I mean, it's adorable that you got me a ladybug Halloween costume, but it's not functional.

We did that with our second kid.  It's a HUGE savings.  We just kept disposables on hand for trips and holidays at other people's homes.  It's not even a real inconvenience once you get in the rhythm.

The only caveat to this is if you're like me and don't have a washer/dryer.

We do have laundry pick up service but they don't do diapers

But I found a good compostable, eco friendly diaper that I plan on using for my newbie. But cloth diapers are cuuuuuuuute but stink to high hell.

I'm sorry I cannot donate money.

If you lived near me I could give you some free baby stuff, we don't need.  Since you don't my advice is to hit up yard sales for clothes, books, toys.  You can usually get things very cheap, there is always folks selling stuff 4-5 items for $1.

Look for things like a vibrating chair, babies love that thing it will reduce your stress.  If you qualify there are many church and govt. assistence programs.

She hasn't. Doctor told us to supplement because he was eating like crazy and yet still hadn't reached birth weight after 3 weeks.

My youngest was in ICU for several days because he wouldn't nurse and couldn't tolerate most formulas because of allergies.  We struggled with the eating issue for months until we found a formula he could tolerate.  Even then, he wouldn't eat the formula mixed from powder, so we had to buy the pre-mixed stuff at something like $17 per quart.  It was insanely expensive.

Yeah, I would consider doing it if my town had a diaper cleaning service (though that defeats the cost saving point), but there is no way I am going to clean literally every single dirty diaper my child makes. At least I can honestly say I have experience dealing with cloth diapers from my nannying days in college, so it's a lot easier to fend off "those mothers" who get all preachy about it.

The new Amazon Mom program offers free scheduled delivery of diapers and something like a 20% discount. You basically just have to give them your baby's due date so they can sell it to marketers.

Yeah. I mean, churches get a tax break for a reason. The staff gets paid and the billsget paid, and then all that money goes out to the community. My dad's church runs several food shelters and have a monthly produce giveaway. I'd say like, 95% of the people that come are Muslim and would never step a foot in our church, but they're still welcome. Every year they also buy all the school supplies for a local inner city school (if anyone is interested in donating to that, EIP).

We also have legal services offered to members pro bono from other members, and single mother help like childcare, cleaning, diapers, meal services, etc. Churches that aren't on TBN are usually full of pretty great people.

CatherineM: Shaggydum80: I can't speak for others, but I'm more likely to donate when someone posts on behalf of someone else in need. When someone shows up in a thread and is like "Gimme some money, y'all" my immediate reaction is "Nope", but when someone old school like Teriaki shows up and is like "Hey, someone needs help" my reaction is more "Who is it and what can I do?"

Why?

The indescribable joy of helping others. Selfish as it may be the little effort it requires from us to bring comfort and relief to another person provides great joy to us. Helping someone is mutually beneficial, it helps those to whom we extend a hand as well as elevating our mood, our feelings of worth, our connection to humanity, and our psychological well being.

Helping others helps me be happy and healthy. With all the negative things going on in the world right now isn't it uplifting to think of a beautiful baby with some new onesies, some bows in her hair and her parents not overly burdened with worry.

I don't know about you but this made my day.

Peace be with you.

I admit it's kind of a weird dynamic between people who mostly don't know each other IRL, but if I saw that you posted a thread asking for help for a friend, my thought would be from what little I know of CatherineM, she seems like a stand up person who wouldn't ask people to help her friend unless it was truly important, and I would be much more likely to donate in that circumstance.  So, even if Teriaki had not identified the beneficiary, I would have donated because it was her bringing the situation to our attention.  It's surely just a judgment call because I don't know anything about Teriaki beyond what I've learned here over time, but that's pretty much the type of call we all make every day.

I can't explain why exactly but it adds another level of legitimacy to me. When someone vouches for someone else without a direct financial benefit to themselves (or at least not an obvious one) it makes it seem more on the up and up to me.

Like a real world situation would be that any homeless person can tell a sob story about why you should give them money and a lot of them make sh*t up. But if your friend was like "Hey, this guy I know just had his house burn down and got fired. I'm helping him out and you should too if you can." I'm helping the guy my friend knows ahead of the random homeless stranger 9 times out of 10.

I can get the whole not wanting to just hand over cash thing but I see no issue with a TFD baby shower, which this really is in essentials. New mom doesn't have to buy diapers and clothes and burp cloths or whatever else babies need and the money saved can go towards helping to get back on her feet financially after what I'm assuming were unexpected hard times.

I wish I could afford to give, but I wish you luck.

With such expensive hospital bills, it seems like maybe you don't have insurance... which why have a child with no insurance? If you do, you really need a better plan.

Also, looking at the registry list... this looks less like necessities and more like "omg TFD have a baby shower for me, I showed you my gash, remember?"

Having someone else post it doesn't make it more legit. I don't even get why that's a thing.

Also, looking at the registry list... this looks less like necessities and more like "omg TFD have a baby shower for me, I showed you my gash, remember?"

Having someone else post it doesn't make it more legit. I don't even get why that's a thing.

Hey, I DO plan on bedazzling my diaper pail. My friends are going to be SO JELLY.

I have a PPO through my work that covers 70%. So I still owe 30% of any charges up to my max out of pocket for the year. I'm GOING to be working with them on cutting it down but they won't work with me on it until I'm done accruing expenses and have a total amount owed.

That's more of a Swiss thing.

Wikipedia: Cats are eaten in certain rural Swiss cultures;[14] the traditional recipe on farms in some regions involved cooking the cat with sprigs of thyme.[15] In January 2004, Reuters reported that, "Swiss culinary traditions include puppies and kittens. Private consumption of cat and dog is permissible. Swiss animal welfare groups say it is hard to estimate how many pets are eaten in Switzerland every year."[16]

If you have high hospital bills, welcome to a lot of Americans. Be responsible, set up payment plans, contact the hospital and ask about community outreach programs that  can help pay for some of it. Or be like other Americans and just stop paying the bills and let healthcare costs rise. I don't really care, but deal with it.

And seriously, looking at the list.... if you don't have people to throw you a baby shower in the real world... like... don't scam people on TFD. You could have just said "guys, throw me a shower!"

Babies, planned or not, often cause financial stress on new parents. Welcome to parenthood, learn to cope.

I hate to say this but, if you live in San Francisco and barely make more than $36,000, you should plan ahead and take birth control do you don't have a baby because you can't afford a baby. Or, like......save $10k before you have a baby, since you can figure out those costs ahead of time by calling your insurance company.

And no healthcare is "free," even if it's of no cost to her. Someone pays. Probably why California is always in financial crisis. Tax payers are paying for that, or it's being borrowered, and as a result other public services don't receive the same type of funding they would've otherwise. So there's always a consequence of freeloading off the state.

I think I have the same thing as Rex. I'm like the cat whisperer. My ex had (well has, but she's my ex now, so it's in the past) a cat with psychological issues that had to be on Prozac to keep him mildly level. He hated everyone and bit people and bullied her dog that was 5 times as big as the cat. That cat and I immediately got along and he used to curl up with me in bed and would jump on my lap when we were watching tv.

Wow, some of you guys...no doubt you have hundreds of thousands of dollars saved up in case of ANY unforeseen circumstances. And you would NEVER have an unplanned pregnancy because that's how awesome you are! (Not saying kiwi's was planned or not, that's not the point)

Sometimes people call out for help, and sometimes other people like to respond. Because guess what, that shoe can always turn up on the other foot. shiat happens. If I can afford $20-30 worth of diapers for a semi-random person, why not? Like someone upthread says even if its a scam, so what? I'm out $20, BFD. But if I am really helping someone in need, that makes me happy. Why be an asshole and shame/snark someone who probably is already feeling plenty down about needing to ask for help in the first place?

Don't get me wrong, I love a good well-pissing, but this doesn't seem like the right place for it.  Having a kid can create financial stress for otherwise responsible people, and even if there was some level of culpability, it doesn't change the basics of the situation- a mother and child in need.

Hey I am open to answering any questions you guys want to ask. I don't want anyone to feel like they're not sure if I'm being truthful or not.

I believe that Kiwi has said that she works in Insurance and plans to (or perhaps already has) talked to the hospital about discounts for cash and I'm sure she is going to audit her hospital bills. Anti-anxiety meds for a pet. My god.

And  Kwame just sort of blew my mind with that list of awful creatures. But I still stand by cats being in the top 2.

Yeah, she has issues with going right outside the litter box and with some aggression stuff sometimes. She's nothing compared to the ex's cat that I just mentioned in my other comment. That cat was on actual people Prozac. They just chopped up human Prozac into cat dose sized chunks. What's crazy is that he seemed to know it helped him and all you had to do was shake the bottle and he'd come running to get a pill shoved down his throat. My cat has to be on a topical version of medicine that gets rubbed into the ear because she flips out if you try to give her a pill.

Huck Chaser: You like boats, but not the ocean. You go to a lake in the summer with your family up in the mountains. There's a long wooden dock and a boathouse with boards missing from the roof, and a place you used to crawl underneath to be alone. You're a sucker for French poetry and rhinestones. You're very generous. You're kind to strangers and children, and when you stand in the snow you look like an angel.

I think we can mostly agree that I'm an asshole, right?  I'm not the most empathetic person on this planet, but isn't this just a simple situation of someone nice needing help and people being free to help or not as they wish?  Does the personal decision not to donate require judging the person in need?  I mean, seriously, I've made a complete hash of my life and yet family and friends still looked out for me despite my f*cking idiocy.  It was extremely humbling for me to know I was a f*ckup, yet have people set their personal feelings about my failings aside so they could lend me support.

I've been in very tough spots in the past where mass donations from internet strangers could've made a huge difference. I'm sure I'm not alone in that. Am I jealous at this moment that someone is getting baby items off their wishlist? No. Does it seem "unfair" that some people receive this help while others don't? Yes.

kiwimoogle84:   I could afford it when I got pregnant. I would LOVE to go back to the beginning of March when my only debt was a car payment.

Not to be a huge snot, but you should expect some debt to be incurred when you have a child. This really isn't all that much (by the time I was 25 I had medical debt in the 5 figure range due to having undiagnosed MS and no insurance) and, like other debt, can be paid down over time. Only the wealthy or at least those who are very secure financially (which you clearly are not, if you have zero other debt and you can't afford $7k... I'm not judging you, just saying you're not that kind of secure unless you have significant savings) can "afford" a baby easily. Money is tight for the majority of new parents, whether they planned or not. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have kids, or that you're not going to be great parents, just that you're going to have to adjust to a new reality of being broke for the next few years. It won't kill you or the baby to have the generics for awhile, and after a year or two things should start getting better.

GladGirl: rappy: With such expensive hospital bills, it seems like maybe you don't have insurance... which why have a child with no insurance? If you do, you really need a better plan.

Even supposedly "good" plans can have astronomical out-of-pocket maxes. My Blue Shield 80/20 PPO carried a $4,500 out-of-pocket max, which in a normal year I wouldn't even get close to touching, but with a pregnancy/birth that cost $38,000, plus another $40-50,000 in pre-adjusted costs for a two-day stay in the NICU, I quickly hit the max. And the kicker is that they count the baby as a whole new person on the insurance, so he was subject to a $4,500 out-of-pocket max himself.

THIS. I am hoping to save up $10k for this reason before having kids because in an instant I could be in this exact same situation. Of course, that won't cover me if lose my job or become disabled or something. Even for people in a good financial situation with an emergency fund, stuff can happen quickly and you can lose a lot. You Farkers rock for helping one of your own- this thread has brought tears to my eyes.

The same reason people think welfare recipients should be drug tested.

Only certain types of welfare, usually the kind the person advocating the testing doesn't accept.

I've yet to hear one of those dipshiats saying people should be required to get tested for taking student loans, or an FHA loan, or the child care tax credit, or mortgage interest deduction and all the other forms of middle class welfare society tries to pretend isn't welfare, even though they're examples of the government offering some sort of assistance using public money as reimbursement for, or subsidizing of individual decisions.

Don't have them. The difficult parts are really difficult and unless you really want them, it's not worth it. The biggest thing is how much time they take up.

Well. I hope she's better at baby once the kid arrives. The legitimate needs of the expectant mother and/or someone with high hospital bills seems to be one of a few things pretty much everyone agrees about and/or has an open wallet for... there are bound to be many local resources for this, the hospital itself being a notable source. I know from experience they will work with you pretty much forever regarding medical debt. I just don't see the pressing need for the Internet to factor in here at all.

Questioning a person who is asking for money seems smart. Do you always just give your money to anyone who asks for it?

kiwi is good people. Amongst other things she had a very successful fund raising thread on behalf of another one of our own, vincent_blackshadow.

I have no money to purchase anything for her or her soon-to-be here baby, but she has my utmost love, respect & support.

If I wasnt totally broke from just finishing paying off my wedding I would contribute. If I remember on Friday I'll take a look at the list and see whats left and maybe contribute.

I think that Finland had it right with their baby boxes. I would love to see something like this in the US.

I was discussing my current debt, but the main kicker was that we went into this week with a few unexpected expenses and didn't have enough money to finish buying baby stuff. The existing debt I can work out on my own, medical bills are my career. I just didn't have a lot of newborn essentials because the car needed to be worked on and the utility bill was overdue, that kind of thing.

I think I speak for all Farkers when I say please keep your baby away from Justin Bieber and everything will be even stevens. Try to keep your baby away from Shia Labouef too. I know he's kind of goofy looking so the baby might like it but long term you don't know the damage you'd be doing.  Peace!

Teriaki: I'm popping back in to say thank you to those of you who have contributed or will be. Don't worry, I won't make a habit of asking for help for people on the internet, nor would I ever take advantage of this community's generosity.

For the cynics, I get it, really. I've got a pretty good "that's a load of bullsh*t" meter, and knowing kiwi, this ain't that kind of situation.

If you're really bothered and want to vent, go ahead and shoot me an email, I'm always happy to field hate mail.

LOVES YOUS!

Thanks for helping Kiwi on this. I went through a similar situation when my son was born. The company his Dad and I both worked for started downsizing (they were actually closing bit by bit unbeknownst to the employees), and we went from 2 nice paychecks to him being laid off and me, being on maternity leave, making no money (They gave me the six weeks off but I didn't get any pay).

It's pretty terrifying having a baby under ideal circumstances, but when there are financial problems thrown into the mix, it is really overwhelming, and makes you feel terrible that you don't have a more solid financial foundation in place.

Starryeyes: You should consider cloth diapers rather than spending so much money on disposable ones. A child will go through an average of 3500 or so diapers in the first year of its life.

yagottabefarkinkiddinme: I was down & out and poor with a newborn. I remember bringing my son over to my grandparents house and my grandpa telling me I need another kid like I need a hole on the head. He's dead and gone now, but some of these fark wad comments are bringing back the sweet memories of my grandpa's first words to me showing him our newborn son.

Oh you're so generous! Thank you. If you have PayPal, my username at gmail is mine (it may have gotten lost in the thread). And if not, just shoot me an email. We'll come up with something.

Thank you.

And as far as the other thread with the farker fighting cancer, I don't know why it's closed. His donation site is in his profile though, so that's a good thing.

I think it's just it's age. The thread above it is open, the thread below it is closed.

And kwimogogle84, I certainly didn't post this to make you feel bad in any manner.

The birth of my two daughters are definitely the highlight of my life. An amazing experience and brought me so much joy and happiness. I sincerely wish you an easy and joyful experience and if the gifts of farkers can make it a bit easier, and maybe a bit more fun, that's just amazingly wonderful.

Also, I believe I am down for July 20, the moon landing.

I emailed him. I don't dig those donation sites... the last one somebody sent me that I actually checked took a 10% fee. Fark that. I don't even bother checking anymore... I'll paypal or send a check before I support one of those websites.

/Don't even like supporting paypal.

I do have an open betting pool going... But seeing as to how I have a scheduled induction for the 30th, she'd have to get impatient to make the 20th. But we shall see.

Also, I wasn't guilted into anything, don't worry. I just think it's right to pass on some of the kindness that I've been shown in spades today, even if I can't do much and need the rest.

I'll ask around and see if I can reach him directly. If so I'll let you know.

Make certain you didn't copy/paste any part of the email address. For security reasons & to cut down on spammers most email services require you to type out the address manually.

So... If anyone is still following this thread, the assistance came at a good time, because I'm headed to labor and delivery right now. Could be a false alarm, but I'll keep you guys posted. :)

Hmmmm, you're right about the Euro and it is on the North American geophysicial plate, but I think it is not in North America by the definition I use (the CIA World Factbook), but I wouldn't say that is a wrong answer either.

Oh, the World Factbook! I appreciate that you cited the source; I marched over to Facebook with that particular morsel of trivia and we've been nattering and grommishing over there about it ever since. Thank you!

And I agree with you.
And I threadjacked again sorry all over the place.

Update?

2013-07-16 10:55:42 PM
I'm seriously about to cry. Why won't they just yank out this baby already?!?No, they monitored my contractions (which slowed to safe levels while being monitored) and BP (which is still really high of course) and instead of inducing me, they're just adding yet another prescription to my regimen and sending me home. Farking frustrating. I can't keep doing these back and forth trips anymore. I'm done. I want this baby out.

Sorry to emotion dump all over the thread. I'm just really done with this.

The raising the child part I'm ok with. The being pregnant part is what I'm done with. My doctors are trashing my health to keep kiddo in just a little longer, which I disagree with. I'm 37 weeks, she's at a good size, I just don't know what they're waiting for. You said you're an OB, maybe you can enlighten me.
