No. And no one should ever be pressured to help in any situation. The worse thing here is anyone looking down on someone who doesn't want to help. Life sucks, get a helmet.

I really don't think anyone feels pressure to help.

You don't have to. No one does. It's an able AND willing thing, and I understand if people can't or won't. I'm not taking it personally. I'm just grateful for those of you who can and will.

Why burn bridges? What happens to the naysayers when they all of a sudden have a financial emergency or some other thing that might benefit from help from Farmers? Let me guess: none of you are pathetic enough to ask for help, right?

Lucky LaRue: hockeyfarker: Starryeyes: You should consider cloth diapers rather than spending so much money on disposable ones. A child will go through an average of 3500 or so diapers in the first year of its life.

that's like ten diapers a day.

i'm not doubting, just, oh my god.

You can get that down to 4-5 if you use a lot of Desatin.

/ don't do this.

It's only 8-10 for the first few months anyway. We were down to 5-6 by the end of year one, and at 20 months, we're still on 5-6. And fark cloth diapers. That's some nasty shiat.

I was gonna buy you something anyway, Kiwi, but this just hastened my process. Donated! And as your kiddo grows I may have some used stuff for her, depending on how much I'll need for my own next child.

Mrs.Sharpier: homeschooled: If she's on TFD, why didn't she post this?

I would recommend reaching out to local churches for baby supplies. People might talk a lot of sh*t about churches, but they will help out pretty much anyone, even if you're not a member. Worth looking into.

One thing (among a few actually) that I admire about the Mormon church, is that they have Women's relief societies. If you're a member for 4 weeks or so after your baby is born, women come to your house and clean and prepare meals and stuff.

It's almost like Europe, but with more Jesus. I guess that's the American way :)

Yeah. I mean, churches get a tax break for a reason. The staff gets paid and the billsget paid, and then all that money goes out to the community. My dad's church runs several food shelters and have a monthly produce giveaway. I'd say like, 95% of the people that come are Muslim and would never step a foot in our church, but they're still welcome. Every year they also buy all the school supplies for a local inner city school (if anyone is interested in donating to that, EIP).

We also have legal services offered to members pro bono from other members, and single mother help like childcare, cleaning, diapers, meal services, etc. Churches that aren't on TBN are usually full of pretty great people.

CatherineM: Shaggydum80: I can't speak for others, but I'm more likely to donate when someone posts on behalf of someone else in need. When someone shows up in a thread and is like "Gimme some money, y'all" my immediate reaction is "Nope", but when someone old school like Teriaki shows up and is like "Hey, someone needs help" my reaction is more "Who is it and what can I do?"

Why?

The indescribable joy of helping others. Selfish as it may be the little effort it requires from us to bring comfort and relief to another person provides great joy to us. Helping someone is mutually beneficial, it helps those to whom we extend a hand as well as elevating our mood, our feelings of worth, our connection to humanity, and our psychological well being.

Helping others helps me be happy and healthy. With all the negative things going on in the world right now isn't it uplifting to think of a beautiful baby with some new onesies, some bows in her hair and her parents not overly burdened with worry.

I don't know about you but this made my day.

Peace be with you.

I admit it's kind of a weird dynamic between people who mostly don't know each other IRL, but if I saw that you posted a thread asking for help for a friend, my thought would be from what little I know of CatherineM, she seems like a stand up person who wouldn't ask people to help her friend unless it was truly important, and I would be much more likely to donate in that circumstance.  So, even if Teriaki had not identified the beneficiary, I would have donated because it was her bringing the situation to our attention.  It's surely just a judgment call because I don't know anything about Teriaki beyond what I've learned here over time, but that's pretty much the type of call we all make every day.

Except for that one "TFer" that had a "friend" post on TFD on his behalf when he was trying to move cross country and it ended up that he scammed a bunch of money out of people anyway.

I can't explain why exactly but it adds another level of legitimacy to me. When someone vouches for someone else without a direct financial benefit to themselves (or at least not an obvious one) it makes it seem more on the up and up to me.

Like a real world situation would be that any homeless person can tell a sob story about why you should give them money and a lot of them make sh*t up. But if your friend was like "Hey, this guy I know just had his house burn down and got fired. I'm helping him out and you should too if you can." I'm helping the guy my friend knows ahead of the random homeless stranger 9 times out of 10.
