From a CNN article in 2012:

http://travel.cnn.com/bangkok/life/hitler-chic-trend-138530
CNN - Bangkok'shiatler chic' trend riles tourists, Israeli envoy

Thai youth are strutting around in T-shirts bearing cartoonish images of the Nazi dictator. Critics blame it on ignorance

Cartoon pandas, Teletubbies, Ronald McDonald. At first glance they don't seem to have much in common beyond a certain childlike quality. But during a visit to Bangkok you may discover another trait these popular cultural icons now share: their resemblance to Adolf Hitler.

In the Thai capital's latest outbreak of Nazi chic, pandas, Teletubbies and Ronald have metamorphosed into cutesy alter egos of the Führer, who seems to exert a childlike fascination over some young Thais.

How far east did those concentration camps need to be?  It's 5,000 miles from Auschwitz to Bangkok, and 4200 miles from Auschwitz to Eastern US.  Tel Aviv is even closer.  If Nazis had pushed their camps another 400+ miles east would it be less funny?  Or am I missing the point entirely and folks in Thailand think Hitler's funny compared to some of the local Asian governments and their atrocities?  I'm lost.

Asian cultures can be incredibly insular, if not outright xenophobic.  Confucianism and Buddhism are both to blame for that.  China is the center of the universe and always will be, etc.  Read TFA - most of the history curriculum at that university relates to the history of the Thai kings.  Hitler is just one of those silly white people that they don't care about.

FTA:  Thailand's premier university has apologized for displaying a billboard that showed Adolf Hitler alongside Superman and other superheroes, saying Monday it was painted by ignorant students who didn't realize Hitler's image would offend anyone.

How does someone learn of Hitler without learning about Hitler? I guess I can see one person being that clueless, but a whole school? Do they not have a history department?

2013-07-15 12:31:47 PM
I figured that their acceptance of Hitler's likeness may come from the fact that Hitler co-opted the Swastika, a symbol that most Thai people probably recognize, and used it. They see him using that symbol and think "Hey it's a symbol that means good, and he uses it, so he must have been good also."  But not fully knowing Hitler's history they don't quite understand what he stood for. And lets face it, as far as history goes, most people don't care or learn about history that didn't impact their people or people living around them.

It has always irked me that people seem to think that the people Hitler killed are more valuable and important than Rwandans or Cambodians, Kurds, Native Americans and all the others.

I wonder how many Europeans would recognize a picture of Pol Pot without a caption?

I'll be honest - I can not.  That got me wondering if people would recognize Hitler if he didn't have such a distinct look compared to other pictures of historical figures, good or bad.  Personally, my background only allows me to be indirectly affected by either, my only connections are stories of relatives in World War II and Vietnam, and being friendly with a nice woman with numbers tatooed on her wrist who came into the store I worked at 20 years ago.  And on that note, Monday sucks enough without thinking about an almost 15,000,000 victim headcount between the two.  Off to distract myself with...work.

"Hitler as a superhero? Is he an appropriate role model for Thailand's younger generation - a genocidal hate monger who mass murdered Jews and Gypsies and who considered people of color as racially inferior," Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean at the center, said in a statement Friday.

well ask the germans from back then. they thought he was a super hero. it's really all about perspective.

My freinds and I did this bit for a lip-syncing assignment in my 9th grade theatre class.  This being Idaho, nobody had a problem with it.

Jon Lovitz as Hitler.

I don't think Hitler's image or Swastikas should offend anyone. His image should be a reminder that a man can kill thousands and thousands and the world should come together to stop those types of men.
The problem with the story, of course, is that he was put next to superheroes, i.e., people we 'look up to and admire'. Wrong message to send.

Asian cultures Humanscan be incredibly insular, if not outright xenophobic.  Confucianism and Buddhism are both  human nature is to blame for that.  China is the center of the universe and always will be, etc.  Read TFA - most of the history curriculum at that university relates to the history of the Thai kings.  Hitler is just one of those silly white people that they don't care about.

My high school history classes were geography, American history, European history and World history.  World history was an AP class and concentrated primarily on Greece and Rome with some Mesopotamia thrown in.

My college semester of Ancient Civilizations was better and skimmed over China, Russia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Americas.  This was not a required class though, just one of many possibilities that fulfilled a history requirement, and I know you could get away with just taking European History or American History, if that's all you wanted.

Dude... Have you ever been to Europe?
And remember this is a Hitler thread. Remember how he got so famous??

Rhino_man: Well, there was this small matter of a world war...

The World Wars are a pretty Euro-centric concept.  From everyone else's perspective it was "Colonizing asshats have war at in Europe in addition to constant war with us".  Asia didn't take a break between the wars.

Huh?

I remember distinctly learning that Asia went to shiat during WWII as well. Even Thailand was not spared. Sure, it was Japan who invaded and tried to subjugate them, but surely they could have mentioned in their History class the fact that while Japan was busy terrorizing Asia, Hitler was doing the same on the other side of the world. Hence, World War...

Interestingly, ghost-Hitler doesn't count toward your carpool lane occupancy eligibility. And he never chips in for tolls.

Ah! So that's why he's so hated.

Put all those numbers on a map. Now, find Ameriland. Next, Siegheilland. And lastly Thailand.

That's my point - these things all relate to Thailand somewhat or not at all.

My wife says he is a type of Thai ghost, but he's not generally "bad".

No. Now that you've made the assertion, support it with evidence.

"Hitler was supposed to serve as a conceptual paradox to the superheroes," he said, noting that the superheroes were painted in vivid colors, while Hitler's image was in grey scale.

spawn73: In fairness, I didn´t hear a thing about Thailand in history in either school or college.

Maybe nothing significant ever happened in Thailand. But that sounds unlikely.

So true.  For most Americans, their only lesson about Thai history is the movie/musical The King and I.

Though Thailand might have more knowledge of the Pacific end of the war.
