Sounds like they've got their mothers in a whirl, not sure if they're a boy or a girl.

2013-07-15 11:26:02 AM
Probably rebelling because they can't control themselves any longer.

2013-07-15 11:26:15 AM
Is it really an "invasion" if they're "rebels"? Doesn't "rebel" suggest that they come from your own country?

I'm a Congolese rebel and I'm okay, I sleep at night and I fight all day.

One reb was called Jean Marie,
Another little reb was called Felicity,
Another little reb was Sally Joy,
The other was me, and I'm a boy.

The cross dressing thing is a weird african magic thing.  IIRC the idea is that if a soldier shows male and female traits, the enemies bullets will be confused and miss.

it leads to madness like this:

On the other hand, it might give you a single moment's advantage while your enemies are confused.

There WOULD be an intimidation aspect.  It might be that the one thing scarier than being attacked by 20 sixth graders with Kalashnikovs might be them all wearing rainbow wigs and prom dresses.

And true believers and guns are nearly always a powerful mix.

Refugees started pouring into Uganda a week or two ago, saying that rebels were getting active.

Maybe it's time for the AU and UN to step in and divide up the country.  The current configuration clearly isn't working.

Another wonderful geographically inept article.

Absolutely no indication other than assuming people know where Goma and Rwanda are as to whether this is about

Democratic Republic of the Congo (Congo-Kinshasa)
or
Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville)

I'm enjoying the Warren Zevon love ITT.

The Congo is almost completely farked up, thanks mostly to the damage done by vicious Belgian colonial policies. As violent and bestial as intra-Congolese conflict has become, it's a walk in the park compared to the way the Belgians ran the country. Read "King Leopold Ghost" some time, and prepare to be disgusted.

Ok, the mercenaries can but the corporations exploiting that region of Africa don't like the negative publicity from whole villages turning up dead.

If you've seen footage of the fighting in Africa it usually involves a bunch of people firing blind around corners and over walls. I don't know how anyone makes any headway.

The execption to thta rule is when one of these rebel groups happens to get into a village and slaughter people in their sleep or kill women and kids while they are at school. They are pretty tough in those 2 situations.

Thanks, I am going to pick this up.

If you want something along those lines, this is an excellent book about Belgium's doings in the Congo.
King Leopold's Ghost

It's a head scratcher. The characters involved are all unbelievable and it's amazing that it happened at all.

When I went on an African Geopolitical kick a few months ago, I basically found that most books written by outsiders go along the lines of "You can't believe how unimaginable farked this place is" before listing all of the materials and minerals available to the people.

Africa is huge. I wonder if one were to add up the positives and negatives of the continent, would the positives come anywhere near the negatives, at least from a first world westerner's view point.

Because in my skewed world, it seems like a very large cesspit of humanity and an vacuum of intelligence.

/I tend to generalize things in inflammatory ways and judge people unfairly.

Unfortunately, a substantial percentage of firearm owners in the United States believe in magic. A substantial percentage of them wish for public schools to teach a story of how the Earth and life on it was created through magickal incantation as fact.

Much of Africa was cut off from the major advancements in technology and civilization for millennia, so they mostly went their own way. And then white Europeans came along, and enslaved, slaughtered, and otherwise mercilessly exploited Africans for another few centuries.

Violence begets violence.

Several years ago I attended a philosophy colloquium at Dalhousie in Halifax and the guest speaker was a gentleman from Nigeria, detailing the effect of oil production in Nigeria. Afterwards at dinner I summarized his thesis and asked how on Earth so many different actors could be disentangled from such an epic fustercluck, and his answer was horribly simple: "It can't." It's unbelievable.
