(AZ Family)   The very first Air Force One plane that once shuttled President Eisenhower on cross-country voyages is now abandoned and forgotten in the Arizona desert quietly decomposing under the merciless sun. This may be some kind of metaphor   (azfamily.com) divider line 129

MANY planes lie slowly decomposing in the desert... slowly being the key word

It probably isn't a worthwhile metaphor that won't make you look foolish in public.

Just like Obama to leave the symbol of the finest 20th century Republican president to sit and corrode in the sun like our rights in the courts.

You seem to be doing fine without a humor detector.

Might be something to do with the fact that it's named "Columbine"...

But it is a triple-talied Constellation, very cool aircraft.

You know, if the Eisenhower Library has the funds, they could simply buy it and restore it and put it on display, like what the Reagan library did.

They should dig up Eisenhower and bury him in it!

I always thought it was in the Presidential Hangar at Wright-Patterson AFB.  The Eisenhower Library will either acquire it or the air force will take it back.

Apparently there were three Planes used by Eisenhower named Columbine.  Columbine III is at Wright-Pat

Oh a C121 Connie. IIRC, Some old Navy guys recently rebuilt a C-121 AWACS at the Chanute Museum. This one doesn't look as bad as the Chanute plane. Maybe because this one wasn't used to teach airman basic aircraft wiring when Chanute was still a training AFB.

There is little sense in preserving it. Though why don't they recycle all of that metal instead of having it sit in the desert?

2013-07-15 07:45:36 AM
The 121 was a beautiful plane regardless.
This would make a nice cornerstone at any aviation museum or park.

Yep. The republicans want nothing to do with anything approaching a Great Society.

Do we, as a nation, need to be on Hoarders? We don't have to save every farking little thing. Not everything is of major importance to generations to come.

Many of these planes can be sold for their parts for other planes that are still flying. Think of the DC3 and C123s. This plane was sold at auction but the guy hasn't been able to figure out how to get it out or donate it. The wings are probably integrated it to the body so you can't just take the wings off and truck it out.

Any museum would wet themselves to get this plane but the logistics in moving it are daunting. Even if the got it flyable some of these airplane graveyard runways are too short for taking off. The planes that come in do so on the finest flying weather day with minimum fuel and once they hit the runway, the brakes lock up. The pilot knows this is the plane's last landing.

I think they go to the plane graveyard so they can be used for parts for other planes. But yeah, a lot of 'em probably don't have many working parts and should just be melted down.

So?  I bet that the toilet he shiat on during his presidency saw the garbage dump long ago.  Should that have been preserved too?

Are any other former Air Force One aircraft on display at any museum? No? Then I don't see the problem.

My God it's just a plane ! Presidents are men, not saints ! No need to treat everything they touched as relics to be preserved.

Thanks for the links. The thing I note most immediately is that it bears no resemblance whatsoever to the plane depicted in TFA. Hooray for journalism!
