...and I've hit 145 with the bags on.

I once did 150 on my VFR, on the German autobahn. This was a the same time one of the great rushes of my life, and something that felt very safe. Man, is that motorcycle built for high speed.
My girlfriend, on her Yamaha FZ6, had to push to keep her feet on the foot rests, because of the wind.

traylor: It's clearly a case of 285 mph standing the ground. If you disagree you are a frigging racer.

Nice.

staplermofo: darch: Jesus. I get nervous at 70mph on my Street Glide. I can't even imagine what 290 must feel like.

I went 90mph once, and it was a lot louder than 70.  The noise inside his helmet must have been insane.

I've gotten my bike to 150mph before. It's probably loud but you really don't pay much attention to that. You're more interested in seeing what's in front of you and not crashing!

Not with the kind of fairing he had. The wind swept over his head.

evilsofa: Video of him hitting 290 in a mile last year (oddly underwhelming to me; it all seems the same above 100mph):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcgHX1r2bcc&feature=player_embedded

He hit 311 mph on a 1.5 mile course in 2011. He was attempting to exceed 300 in a mile in the fatal crash.

That 'busa really started biatching at 14k revs.

staplermofo: Savoir-Faire: My record is a GPS-indicated 156mph

How loud is that?  Like, if you lift your head up, do your ears explode?

I did 160 on a Kawi ZX-6 on a long flat highway in KS.  You can't lift your head up.  Your chin is buried on the tank.

Did it once.  Never again.  it was the bike's max speed.

I love it when some prick on a bike comes tearing down the road, startling other drivers. It's also fun being behind a car that has to hit the brakes because a bike cut them off. Impatient assholes can't wait ten seconds for cars to pass each other, so they just have to cut them off.

That's just it- no one driving a car/truck/etc should be startled by ANYTHING on the road. Your attention should be total and complete. But alas, I watch people weave all over the road like they've been on a bender all afternoon and when I pass them- yep- texting.

When  I ride, I assume every single car, truck, pedestrian, animal, motorcycle, bicycle, etc is actively out to END MY LIFE and I ride accordingly.

Don't be so negative. At 285 I doubt there was much of a smear there.

Warner previously hit 311 mph on the same course in 2011, using 1.5 miles of pavement. That's considered to be the world land speed record for a conventional motorcycle....This time he was trying to hit 300 mph using just a mile of pavement

Dying trying to set a new speed record = tragic/brave.  Dying trying to set a pointless meaningless non-record?  Stupid/waste.

it's all subjective.

there's a very thin line between bravery and stupidity and it's really hard to define where it is.
most people would say that taking unnecessary risks that could easily kill you is foolish.

mrlewish: staplermofo: Can motorcycles have aerodynamic downforce stuff, like spoilers, without it making them crash more when they turn?

Actually, no but you can give them downforce other ways... but it's probably not downforce that is the issue here.  It's usually harmonics that (baring catastrophic mechanical failure) that cause a crash in a straightaway.

Nice.  If I had pics of my old 'Bird I'd post them.  I loved that bike.  It was a straight-up cruise missile, and the engine was smooth like silk.  Not so great in the corners, but it felt more planted and stable at 170 than any other bike I've ever ridden.  If you haven't topped yours out, you should really find a spot and do it.  It's what that bike was made for.
