Pretty much available everywhere except OH and UT.

This is good, because it gets me off the hook for acquiring it for people.

It's beer. Either like the beer and buy it or buy another beer, that for all you know, is owned by a pedophile. No one is saying you should buy this, or anything else, because you're endeared to the purveyor. If you do you are a tool.

Holding the line on whether or not you're going to try a product based on how well their views match up with yours is fine for those of you that do it. Go on with your bad selves. As for me,  I'm pretty sure that there's nobody out there that I completely agree with on every single thing, so that's not one of my product judgment criteria.

I'll buy it because I wanna try it. If it's good, I'll buy more of it.

You know how wine-nuts rave about this note and that note and the tannins, (oh the tannins!) ?  This is the same thing, except for beer.

They need some language to attempt to communicate what is in the flavor.  Coffee 'flavor' in stouts is completely normal.  Not because coffee itself is necessarily used, but the outcome of the beer reminds a drinker of coffee.  Likewise with licorice.

If you're surprised by those words being used to describe a stout you probably just don't read the foofly descriptions of stouts often (Which is something I would not blame you for at all).  Guinness is described as having a coffee taste (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/209/754), so is Left Hand's Milk Stout (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/418/3434 ), and many other stouts.

If you like stouts, coffee and licorice in the beer nerd description shouldn't turn you off from trying it.  If you don't like stouts, well, you don't like stouts.

They have a ways to go before they have the record for ABV in a beer.

Technically these are beer concentrates moreso than just beers, they've been "freeze distilled" where the water is frozen and removed from it until it stops freezing in general because of how concentrated the alcohol is.  This is also how traditional apple-jack is made (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Applejack_(beverage))

At such high ABV, I would have thought those record-breakers would be classified as spirits, as beer liqueur if you will, rather than a beer.  At least the w00t stout can be consumed in a pint glass without the risk of killing you in the first round.

I appreciate the trivia, though.  Thanks

It's the old game of "how do we classify this given what it is?" where it crosses several boundaries of definition.

It's a beer in that it's fermented grain tea.  It's a spirit in that it's a fermented liquid that has been intentionally processed to increase the ABV by removing water (and other liquids).  Maybe they're beer spirits?  I wonder what the legal differentiation is... Hmm...

Licorice is pretty good in a stout.

RangerTaylor: LZeitgeist: RangerTaylor: MadSkillz: Lemme guess. More overhopped madness from the microbreweries?

My immediate expectation.  13% ABV generally means shiatty tasting overhopped beer that people rave about because beer-hipsters.

It's a stout, not an IPA.

\go back to your PBR, cretin...

Sounds like they do it wrong...

Come to NC sometime, we've got just as many breweries who actually know how to brew...

Beerits?  Spibeer?  Birits?

Screw it, let's stick with beer and get drunk... ;)

Livingroom: MadSkillz: Livingroom: if wheaton had anything to do with this, he proved he was a huge douche with his comments about the zimmerman trial, and i'm not going to give him a thin dime.

What'd he say

Actually, don't die in a fire, George Zimmerman. Live your whole miserable life knowing you killed an innocent child for nothing.
- Wil Wheaton (@wilw) July 14, 2013

Is that really Wheaton's twitter account?  I thought he was smarter than that.  I have zero respect for anyone who still believes Zimmerman is a "child murderer", at this point.  The truth is just too widely available.  I would have at least given the beer a try, but I'm not supporting anyone who panders to the willfully ignorant.

13% ABV  is about right for me. I'll pick some up if I can find it.

Live in OH, but working in KY for a few days, hopefully I can score some. BTW, I would never call Dr Phil Plait "stupid", if you disagree with him, fine, but it's probably not him being the "stupid" one...

nekom: Langston: Holding the line on whether or not you're going to try a product based on how well their views match up with yours is fine for those of you that do it. Go on with your bad selves. As for me,  I'm pretty sure that there's nobody out there that I completely agree with on every single thing, so that's not one of my product judgment criteria.

Whatever, I'll stick to my skittlebrau.

/seriously though, never found a stout I liked

Arrogant bastard was the first stout I liked.

So, somehow "I disagree with his view on the results of a highly-publicized trial" is the same as "he monetarily and publicly supports arbitrarily barring rights from and entire section of the population based on archaic religious beliefs"?

The stupid, it burns.

SirTanon: I'll be hitting the local Bev-Mo on my way home today to see if I can find this.. mostly because I'm really curious how it tastes.. If I don't like it, I'll stick with another awesome Stone product:

Russian Imperials are my fave. I'd recommend the Old Rasputin, or even a Peg Leg over the Stone, though.
There's a microbrewery outside of Yorkshire that does an unbelievable one called Baltic Imperial

A great beer indeed, but vastly over-priced.....$14.99 for a sixer here in Austin, to steep....

So how do I figure out where this gets distributed? Undoubtedly it will be found within 5 miles of where I live in the LA area, but Stone has so many brews and vendors that I don't think their beer finder thingy is all that accurate.

well, depends on which part of la. Allied ( millercoors ) has the valley and ventura county. Stone also has their own distro op. Solution : look for stone products and ask for it. I might stock this, even though i lack door space. It depends on how many folks ask for it.

Oh, their beers are easy to find. The question is where to find specific ones. Stone's website has a beer finder that uses a Google Maps API, but some of the listed places don't say which beer(s) they have - I'm guessing that thing would be a pain to update, though, with so many locations. It just occurred to me to try the BevMo a couple miles from my place. I got some Oaked Arrogant Bastard a few days ago from the grocery store 2 blocks away, but they probably won't have the more limited edition type stuff.

the big 3 ralphs abertsons vons all have "please add this item" cards at the checkout. Also- if a liquor store carries a few different stone items, chances are they either will order it or already have done so.

Oh, buy the beer.  It looks like the third partner is one of the Koch brothers so it all evens out.
