The entire 70's was on Quaaludes.

Tiny camera crew? Three cameras plus a switcher, more like. Plus a semi-decent soundboard. Plus a lighting rig.

/hey, our high school had a TV studio.

Interesting that Jerry Harrison wasn't part of the group yet. I didn't know he came in later.

"Rare footage"

Not anymore.

I believe Harrison had left the Modern Lovers and was in school at RISD when this was shot. They recruited him because he could play keyboard and guitar.

it's not 'rare footage'

it has been greened here before:

Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" live at CBGBs Aug 16 2007 (link is now dead)

and as one of the commenters in that original thread said, "I'm a huge talking heads fan but damn, they sure came a long way from that performance".

/and I'm not thread-jacking or off topic or submitting this as a repeat
//it would just be refreshing if the submitted headlines weren't so ignorant of the subject matter (meaning, don't call something rare that was already greened here 6 years ago in the hopes of coaxing a greenlight)

2013-07-14 02:02:27 PM
pffft, this is the performance when they totally sold out man.

2013-07-14 02:26:19 PM
I'm not sure if the Talking Heads is the greatest band ever in my mind, but pretty damn close. Also, I'd fark David Byrne, repeatedly, from the day that was recorded, until last night. And then I'd get up, take a shower, and we could do it some more today.

Looks like youtube removed a video of PK from 1981 that was pretty much the Talking Heads at their peak. It was released on a Talking Heads retrospective dvd last year. Other people will say that the Rome show was their best. It's still on youtube.

Well gosh, thanks for that! Douche.

I can't go that far, but certainly one of the most under-rated, even with the love they get.

That link is almost six years old, I think the statute if limitations expired on that one

How did they get such great audio of that performance? Did CBGB's record every performance there straight to tape for preservation?

This was brands new to me, and I'm glad the modmins ignored the anal retentive killjoys that believe just because they saw something six farking years ago that it's a mortal sin for other people to ever enjoy it again.

And it's weird to hear the chorus without the lift at the end of the vocals. Cool vid, thanks to subby for submitting it.

I saw him sitting in an airport 10 years ago or so. I just walked up to him, told him I'm a huge fan of all his work, and I just wanted to thank you for it. Then walked away. He's one of those guys (david bowie including) that I'd just lose it over, but I kept it cool, short and didn't make him sign some useless piece of paper.

I mention it only because my friends are sick if hearing my yammer on about it for the last five years. David Byrne recorded a great album with Brian Eno in 2008. It's criminally underrated. If you're a fan and haven't heard it, definitely check it out. It's called Everything That Happens Will Happen Today.

Yep, David Byrne has also done some good work with Thievery Corporation. If you haven't, check them out, very cool.

I did not know that, which is odd since I consider myself one of Fark's premiere music assholes. I'm seeing TC at Red Rocks in two weeks. Never seen 'em, should be hot.

WHY WAS I NOT TOLD OF THIS? (Sorry to shout, I know farkers aren't blind...generally.)

Here be one called "Dance On Vaseline" (what is it with Byrne and Vaseline? Or do I want to know?). It is not bad. Not great, mind, but not bad. Good for a Sunday afternoon.

thanks for posting that subby. Makes me want to build a time machine so I could see these New Wave bands back in the day, as an adult. (I was 8 or 9 when they were just starting to hit it big.)

The now legendary 1983 Stop Making Sense performance, directed by a pre-Silence of the Lambs Jonathan Demme. In it's glorious entirety.

If you don't get chills during "Psycho Killer", "Life During Wartime", "Once in a Lifetime" or "Heaven"....check your pulse.

Yeah, I'm at least somewhat familiar with their work. They get played a lot on the Massive Attack Pandora channel. I just didn't know about the couple with Byrne. Thank ye for the link, though.

i get so sad every time i walk by where CBGB used to be and see the John Varvatos store.

on another note i sat in front of David Byrne at a movie and he would bust out the most annoying laugh at the least funny moments of the movie.

still love me some talking heads, particularly Orange Crush.

Have you ever seen the interviews he does with himself at the end of Stop Making Sense concert movie? Dudes not quite there, but in a good way.

there was a thread a few months back that had a video of David doing "psycho killer" as a sort of an acoustic solo and doing all the great antics on stage. I wanted to bookmark it but either didn't or it is lost in the mess of computer consolidation. Anyone remember the url?

Someone linked the Stop Making Sense movie upthread, which may be what you're looking for. It's the first song. (Movie as a whole recommended, if you're unfamiliar.)

I really enjoyed this video, I am not sure if I had seen it before. What struck me with this very early version is the New York sound that the Talking Heads are expressing.

Even when they have Mrs. Brady hairstyles.

Here's a fun fact that makes me feel really old: Tina Weymouth is the AUNT of Katharine Weymouth, publisher of the Washington Post.

I love the Talking Heads... but they really, really owe a lot to Brian Eno.

ooo oo Talking Heads thread!

The Talking Heads is the only band I can think of where I think every single song they released (on albums) was good... some are masterful, some just good, but not a single one that I don't enjoy.

In my personal list of best bands/musicians Talking Heads is in a perpetual battle for #1. I have literally heard More Songs About Buildings and Food hundreds of times. It simply never gets old...

What are some of their best songs you ask? Well here are a few of the great (and less popular) ones:
