Look, here's the deal. Yea, nudists aren't always going to be someone you would want to see naked. People get that. But since when are you such a farking Greek god? Every human being on this planet is physically different from the other on the outside. Six billion of us. It's part of what makes us unique.  Genetically, it's done that way to confuse the hell out of any alien race thinking of invading us.

The reason that there are a lot of older nudists, now let's say 'older' in this case defines as to 40-70 and above, is because that is how your generation was raised. Your grandmother or great-grandmother grew up taking baths in a washtub with water that had been heated on the stove. Your father, or your grandfather, grew up swimming completely naked at the YMCA with other boys and men and skinny-dipped in rivers and lakes in Scouts. These were different times, but the times ended up with these people feeling more comfortable about their bodies and having better self-esteem BECAUSE of these things. They LEARNED to accept the differences in the human body and be COMFORTABLE with who they were and what they LOOKED LIKE. That's why they don't give a damn about being naked in the locker room or going to places as nudists. A long time ago they learned it doesn't matter in the end. Nudists care about how you act and who you are, not how much money you will be making or what you do when the clothes are on.

Most nudists you will meet aren't going to be supermodels but they are going to be some of the nicer persons you could meet because they have taken the opportunity to get it into their heads to accept the fact that there is more to life in the short time a human being is on this planet than putting emphasis on appearance or clothing. People make too much of a fuss over these sort of things. It's why other countries such as France and Spain and Germany snicker at us behind our backs, because over there nudity is not seen as something that will ruin your child's psyche for life or cause irrefutable harm to society.

It all comes down to how you were raised and your personal beliefs. If you are more comfortable naked at home alone or just want to keep the clothes on at all times like a Ned Flanders, fine. But please don't crap over someone who would rather do it without the clothes and in their skin. As long as they aren't doing it illegally in public somewhere and are keeping to themselves or places like clothing optional or nudist facilities, let them be.

Really? Your so-called "older" folks ("40-70 and above", as you put it), are the Baby Boomers and Generation X, not the folks who grew up before indoor plumbing was invented. If Boomers are nudists, it's because they are ex-hippies who went skinny dipping at Woodstock or on the commune, not because they were Okies scratching out a living during the Dust Bowl. As for the Gen-X crowd, well, speaking as a Gen-Xer myself - who the hell knows; maybe they want to show off those implants they bought with the settlement they got after their 2nd divorce.

Hang up with nudity is largely an American thing in the westernized world. Europeans find our prudishness almost a fetish.

I find the American hang ups with sex really weird (which is weird given I was born and raised here, and raised Irish catholic. You'd think I'd have tons of sex guilt/hangups but newp) but I share our cultural hang up with nudity. I don't have a problem showing my naked body, but I do not ever do so casually, it's always intentional and sexual (or a doctor's exam). I have friends that walk around nude all day long. I only go commando when out of clean panties.

But my hang ups are my problem, that's how it should be. If I'm uncomfy it's my farking problem. That being said, bring a towel to sit on. ;)

Ugly/fat people who expose too much skin should be rounded up and sent to death camps. Nudity is a privilege, not a right. It should only be afforded to those among us with aesthetically pleasing bodies. To think otherwise is to invite madness.

To quote Bugs Bunny: "Heavens! Do I offend?"

So let me get this straight. You are saying I got the age range wrong, correct? You do realize that skinny dipping at the YMCA was a natural part of visiting there until as late as the early 1980s, right? And you do realize that despite any stories to the contrary that you made read online, NO women were allowed past the lobby area, right? That these were all guys just enjoying being men and boys and enjoying the feeling of swimming without your clothes on? This is still the 40-70 age range and I can tell you from experience that once you get used to it being nude around others becomes not much of a big deal.

Also, school showers were a normal thing throughout the 40s-80s. Some schools in the USA still have them as requirements today. "We" didn't have them because by the time "we" came around in the 1980s the school had done away with them and put only about seven to ten minutes in for the school schedule. And since your school schedule has to put in to consideration *all* grades -- such as when 6th, 7th, 8th will eat lunch, how long will the 7th grade Science class last, etc. then to put time in for showers for that age range and educational level would have left a lot less time for classes during the day. Not that, looking back, would I have had much of a problem trading being naked in front of my male peers to not having to take science or history class. I think I could have eventually lived with such a sacrifice.

I do acknowledge your point about the 1960s --- I assume that's what you were going for with that? But again, the 1960s were a different time, a different place *and* there was still skinny-dipping at the YMCA, hot springs, women going topless meant a protest and not a sexual offense to be arrested for at the time, etc. So what's wrong with keeping those values instilled in a newer generation?

If so-called "Generation X" has a problem with going nude it is because they lack the times and social experiences of their parents. However, as one gets older, one starts to realize that there is more to worry about than being seen in your birthday suit. What the hell, if you are more concerned about someone seeing you naked than how you are going to send your kid to college, keep the lights on or put groceries on your table -- even if you are the only one at that table -- then maybe you need to take another look at what you are worried about and where your priorities should lay. I am not saying there is a problem with modesty, far from it, I am just saying if you are going to make a list of "OH CRAP THEY SEE ME NOODZ ZOMG" you might want to consider putting that one down on #9 or #11 and put all your other worries above it.

Yeesh, hell of a victim complex for a first-world problem.

I don't give a rat's ass if someone strolls around naked but neither is my outrage-o-meter going to tick above zero if they're ridiculed for it.  I'm not exactly an Adonis myself but I'm not the one with the shriveled junk hanging out.  Also, this:

I didn't think I was being "melodramatic."
Knowing this is Fark, I knew the chance of asshole would be 100% and there would be posts about how "ugly" people are or "put a towel on" or whatever.
The reality of the situation is that nudists are normal people, they could just give a damn about the problems of the world when clothes are on. Most of them take them off for that very reason --- there is a lot less stress and BS to deal with or think about in the front of your mind when the clothes come off. It's like taking a personal vacation in your head only you do it with your skin.

You're right, I don't look like a Greek Adonis, that's why I keep my clothes on, and why I would expect to be ridiculed by others if I were to take them off in public.

It's why other countries such as France and Spain and Germany snicker at us behind our backs, because over there nudity is not seen as something that will ruin your child's psyche for life or cause irrefutable harm to society.

Clearly you haven't been to these places in a long time. Modesty is mostly a thing over there now too, and the nude beach and nudist activities over there are mostly full of the same geriatric crowd that does that stuff here. The myth of a more liberal Europe with of beaches full of naked hotties is just that, a myth.

It's why other countries such as France and Spain and Germany snicker at us behind our backs, because over there nudity is not seen as something that will ruin your child's psyche fo ...

puckrock2000: Really? Your so-called "older" folks ("40-70 and above", as you put it), are the Baby Boomers and Generation X, not the folks who grew up before indoor plumbing was invented. If Boomers are nudists, it's because they are ex-hippies who went skinny dipping at Woodstock or on the commune, not because they were Okies scratching out a living during the Dust Bowl. As for the Gen-X crowd, well, speaking as a Gen-Xer myself - who the hell knows; maybe they want to show off those implants they bought with the settlement they got after their 2nd divorce.

Lot of houses out in rural areas didn't get indoor plumbing (or electricity) until the late fifties. Plenty of baby boomers that wouldn't have had it as  children

FTFA: "Participants were to bare all at clubs, beaches, rivers, lakes, pools and backyards at 1:00 "Local Nudist Time.""

Nudists have their own standard time?

rdu_voyager: Banned on the Run: Skinny dipping (NSFW)

Another NSFW

and another NSFW

Based on pictures I've seen of real nudist camps, those are usually not the type of women you find there.

Try taking a vacation in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. You'll see plenty - also a lot of older (and younger - shock horror).

/CSB - my wife, brought up in a Welsh mining valley in the '50s did not have indoor plumbing and all the family took their turn in the tub in front of the fireplace in the living room.

I wish I had known about this thread sooner. I've got plenty of examples of nudists you wouldn't mind seeing naked, and I will be photographing more this weekend.

Also, very well said, Fiction Fan!

Thank you to all.

Home nudist here for several years, got over being bashful back in my mid 20s.
Now mid 30s and not giving a damn who sees what or what I see on others.
Life is short. Clothes or no clothes, it's easier without them.
