Neighbor found a farked up, hurt, wounded, raven in his front yard.  It was part of a group of 5-6 that had marked our houses as their territory and were always hanging out begging food from my neighbor and me.  The hurt one was on the grass surrounded by his mates, and they would aggressively move towards any person who tried to investigate.  When my neighbor decided to have a look, they opened a path to let him check out the hurt one.

Long story short, the vet wanted to euthanize the bird, but my neighbor came up with some cash and the vet amputated the bird's crushed wing.  Bird now lives on my neighbor's patio with his parrots, and his raven buddies still visit every day.

Ima4nic8or: "Meanwhile your neighbor's dog still barks every time you take out the trash."

Truer word were never spoken.  They should train their damn animals not to bark or they should keep the things inside.

Why are dog owners such irresponsible assclowns?  They let their dogs shiat all over the place and don't pick it up, fail leash the things and let them run wild about the neighborhood, when their dog lunges at some 5 year old riding his bike by they say "oh, don't worry, he wouldn't harm a fly", even when the dog is quite clearly about to take a bite out of the kid.  On the sad occasion that their dog bites someone they moronically continue to say their dog is harmless and must have been provoked.  Dog owners are among the most lazy, irresponsible, moronic folks on the planet.  I wish I could say this applies only the gangbanger types who seem to think having a pit bull makes their cawk bigger but unfortunately every dog owner seems to be afflicted, even those that look like sane, rational people.

I was thinking about asking why you woke up so grumpy.

Then I thought about all the bike paths around here littered with dog crap from their owners walking/jogging/biking with them.

/Not a dog guy but have known some great ones.

Your friend saved them the cost of a raven funeral, which they would actually have held if the bird had died. All the ravens from miles around come to say their goodbyes to a dead bird. I'm not necessarily sure they're mourning, but whatever it is, it's really fascinating.

Ravens are neat. We had one that visited our back porch when I was a little kid, and we gave him bites of hot dog while trying to persuade him to say 'nevermore.' (We were not the most creative children, my siblings and I.) Eventually, my little sister was home with a summer cold for some days and managed to consistently train him.

Problem was, for YEARS afterward the people in the area reported this creepy-as-fark raven who would sidle up to a human and remark "Nevermore?" in this cheerful, squeaky little girl's voice. It was apparently terrifying, and yet, kind of awesome.

Awww...isn't that cute? Ima4nic8or is trying to sound like a grown-up. Isn't that just precious? Lemme guess. Your mom's not home and she left her laptop on.

Nice job woman. You pull out the porcupine quills...and then poison the crow to death at the very end by force-feeding it Dictostelium amarillo. Nice jorbs.

Ravens ARE smart... but for what its worth i have a suspition that magpies are the most brilliant of the birds... They are annoying as hell and if you pay attention to what they are doing you notice they are incredibly smart. I saw a pair tease our cat growing up -- one would hop lazily on the lawn in front of our kitty and goad him into getting pouncy. The other magpie would swoop down behind the cat and hop up behind it and when the cat was completely distracted the magpie would peck him right on the tail.

They could recognize guns and would disappear every time you took one outside.

They are mean buggers sometimes -- but smart. The best way to get rid of ravens or magpies is to kill a few in traps and then nail their corpse to a tall post or a tree. They get freaked out and leave the area.

(one must get rid of them -- they will hop onto the back of a sheep and peck fist sized wounds in living animals that cant defend themselves -- or they will break into garbage cans and spew it all over your yard. Or they will eat all the dogs food every freaking day.)

Mystery Vortex: She clearly doesn't know how to properly remove quills. They have barbs, so pulling them straight out hurts more. You're supposed to twist them out.

A quick google search implies otherwise.  Citation?

I wonder if to certain intelligent animals, humans are the most capricious things on the planet. They might help you if you get hurt, or they might kill you without a thought.

If there is reincarnation, I'd like to come back as a crow. They seem to have a pretty good grasp on things.

I also wish I had a crow as a pet that lived outside and would play when I went outside

Idk...corkscrew shaped quills seems perfectly reasonable to me...

Kea, for when you decided you didn't need windscreen wipers anyway (they will tear off all the rubber seal).

Also, it's weird to call them "kea parrot".  That's like saying "cockatoo parrot".  Strictly speaking correct, but odd.  I guess for people not familiar with them (i.e. the vast majority of the world) it gives them an idea of what you're talking about.  Otherwise you could be talking about a kind of fish, for all they knew.

That is pretty cool.

I encountered a newspaper from the twenties and it had an article about a raven that was playing 'fetch' with a dog.It would fly out with a twig, drop it then watch as the dog went and fetched it. I got a real chuckle out of that.
Im kind of a softie when it comes to little beasts but I dont know if I would have had the presence of mind to help that raven.I would have given it a snack though. I hope it hangs around that womans property, maybe make a home for itself.

Very true. I once pulled porcupine quills out of Joe Flacco's ass.

Are you admitting to having gone near Joe Flacco's ass?

I used to have an adversarial relationship with a flock of crows on my paper route.  Damn things were smart, and they knew my route as well as I did.  They would often follow me around the route making all kinds of racket.  They also knew which houses/yards where I would have limited visibility so they could swoop in and try to take a few hairs off of my head.

I had that route for five years, and it was actually a lot of fun playing around with crows every morning.  It's been well over a decade, but it wouldn't surprise me if those birds still recognized my face.
