That might be cool if it was recorded at that table instead of in a studio.

Hmmm, I love the smell of pretentious upstart musicians in the morning.

I absolutely love vocal harmony........but that was unwatchable. I had the urge to biatch-slap all of them only 5 seconds in.

Watching the cups, I may have developed Tourette Syndrome.

I don't know, I heard the background sounds, birds, cars.  I think that was legit

I only made it a few seconds until the girl started singing in that god-awful raspy nasally style that's somehow supposed to represent soulful singing. I'm pretty sure American Idol is to blame.

I think they cups on the table thing in the park was...I wouldn't be surprised if the voices were redone in a studio. They sound VERY clean and well balanced for being recorded in the open air on just two mics like that.

I'm thinking 3 takes. One to record the rhytms on the table, one to record them lip syncing and going through the motions, and a studio take for clean vocals to lay over it all.

However, I am neither a film nor music producer so wtf do I know.

I'm an amateur who has done a lot of live recording in all kinds of locations, and I believe that there is no way the vocals were recorded live in that park. I think the whole thing was beautifully done, but not live.

This.

Four good looking, clean cut teens doing something productive, creative and with a nice amount of musicality.

Amazing how it brings out the hate and jealousy in others.

I thought is was real until I looked at the mics. What are they plugged into? There's nothing under the table and no cables running away.

Still liked it though.

What was done better? Racking up tens of thousands in student loan debt for a music degree, then complaining about not being able to pay off the loans because of no job. If that is the case, yes, I can not top that.

/Spent most of my school years hacking away at a keyboard and staring at a monitor, luckily there are plenty of jobs that look for those skills and compensate people accordingly.

No, what bring out the hate and jealousy is other people relying on their good looks to get a pass.

/I prefer double blind tests.

Still bears repeating.

The mics look to be from the JZ Black Hole series (BH1 or BH2, but it's hard to tell from the video).  Those are relatively high end mics.  They list at around $2500 for the BH1 and $1500 for the BH2.  When in a cardiod polar pattern, they'd be fairly directional (this is why Tay Zonday moves his head away from the mic when he breathes in), only picking up sound from what they were angled at.  You'd be able to hear a LOT of fall-off as the kids move their heads around.

Ever see a high school battle of the bands?  Inevitably, some kid is going to look down at the neck of his guitar while singing- and you won't be able to hear a sound out of his mouth because he's no longer singing into the mic.  The kids in this video sing at a constant volume no matter where their mouths are oriented.  So, yeah, the singing was added later.  Maybe even some of the percussion too- at 1:18, one of the boys pretends to make a "ploop!" sound with his cup, but doesn't even get it to his mouth.

I just spent 20 minutes analyzing a video about people banging cups on a table, probably not even doing a very good job of it.  FML.

Lulu and the Lampshades. First and best.

jmsvrsn: Lulu and the Lampshades. First and best.

Random teenage girl (by the name of Anna Burden) covering it, second and better.
In fact, I'm pretty sure her video is the one that started it all. Here in an interview Anna Kendrick actually comes out and says she saw a viral video and that made her learn the song.

/and of course the one who made the song famous doesn't do near as good of a job as the teenage kid sitting in her room in front of a webcam.

Agreed! All the other versions are just too sterile, they miss the point of it.
