Curious: even with a loose interpretation of the stand your ground defense.

It is not a Stand Your Ground defense. Stop saying that.

shower_in_my_socks: Elegy: "There was the 911 call ... and you can clearly hear the distress in Rico Gray's voice. They had a verbal argument [in which] he said 'I'm outta here,' and she said, 'I've got something for you."

He TOLD the 911 operator that she had said that. There is no recording of her actually saying it. The 911 call was placed AFTER the shooting, so how would there be a recording of what was said BEFORE the shooting? I think you're misreading the quote you pasted. I listened to the 911 tape on another site. It was clearly made after the shot was fired.

Curious: Elegy: you didn't watch any of the trial or see any of the actual facts or evidence presented,

i didn't watch the trial but did watch the nightly news summaries on several channels. i have also bookmarked the 911 tape transcripts and read them several times. IMO once the dispatcher told zimmerman "we don't need you to do that" anything zimmerman did after that negates the stand your ground defense. YMMV

I think I see the problem here....

they may be spreading butter on their pancakes with them knives.

(seriously, hysterical all caps posting about people carrying knives in oakland... i kinda think that they'd be a little more worried if they had guns)

Somacandra: TheDumbBlonde: I grew up with a large community of people Spanish descent. They were always considered white.

[i.imgur.com image 183x273]

I am a person of Spanish descent, and I'm often considered white depending on the context. Like I said, there are reasons in any given time and place why certain communities are considered "white" and some are not. Whiteness is a changable, mutable, historically conditioned characteristic, as is racialization in general.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard: :"Whiteness is mutable".

And there's the problem. The nightly news summaries were horrible: everyone that watched the trial itself on Fark was commenting that the news channels were watching an entirely different trial or something. From day 1, every day was a better day for the defense, where they simply destroyed the credibility of the prosecutions witnesses or completely turned them to support the defenses version of things. It was bizarre, the prosecution spent most of its time on redirect trying to impeach and undercut the testimony of its own witnesses.

Turn on the major news channels: BIG DAY FOR THE PROSECUTION ZIMMERMAN GUILTY.

And, FYI, the SYG was never part of this case, this was simple self defense. Also FYI, the non-emergency dispatcher - who was a civilian, not a police officer, and a prosecution withness - said on the stand that he could not issue legally binding orders because of liability reasons. And finally, Sereno, also a prosecution witness and the lead investigator in the case, testified that Zimmerman did nothing wrong or illegal even if he had followed Martin. And finally, the prosecution never proved that Zimmerman followed Martin, as the fight started at the top of the T intersection near Zimmerman's truck.

That's been the problem with this case - the media reporting has been horribly inaccurate. The fact that Zimmerman got out of his truck had absolutely no bearing, legal or otherwise, on the court case.

The fact that Mr. Zimmerman did not rely upon the so-called "Stand Your Ground" defense in no way means that the Zimmerman verdict is not a reason to repeal the "Stand Your Ground" laws.

Popcorn Johnny Oh shiat, police have formed a do not pass line.

You know what 'they' did to Fresno Bob? after the first 2007 Lakers Victory?  We were leaving a publicity screening of "The Hitcher" reboot & this Army of LAPD Riot Police came double-timing down Cahuenga from Hollywood Blvd & a buncha drunks sauntered out of Big Wang's...a cop ordered a guy & his girl back, maybe it was a psychological thing, so they did.  Another drunk from Wang's sidled up to this kid & said "brother, you gonna let them pigs pull that in front of yo' woman?  Hell No! " & he went on so to kid marches up to the LAPD Riot Police & said-actually, he didn't say anything because they stepped up to him in a millisecond & hurled him into the bushes face first, stuck those Glad-wrap flexcuffs on him & hurled him into a paddywagon while one half of the crowd whistled oh shiat", tthe other half chanted "Rodney King" & everybody filmed it on their iPhones.  The LAPD ran back to Hollywood Blvd  & disappeared while the drunk sidled up to the now alone girlfriend & promised to get her home

The gun is garbage. Have you seen it? It's all bent up. The tube is bent up, the slide is unable to close because of it.. Probably because of the point blank shot. The gun will never be used again.

TheDumbBlonde: It was the onlypossible outcome.

pardon? the only? odd the rest of us thought there were two other options. it would be the only if the stand your ground laws meant you could pick a fight and if losing pull a gun and shoot your opponent. while i doubt that's what any of the various legislators meant when this was passed in various states it seems to now be the go to interpretation. but hey disregarding the police dispatcher, your neighborhood watch training and stalking a kid in a hoody is ok with you go for it. oh yeah there was that little matter that zimmerman's neighborhood watch training told him to leave his gun home too. do you really think he would have been in such a hurry to stalk martin without the gun?

zimmerman farked up. you may not agree, the jury didn't but that's what happened.
