So, when all this is said and done, what really changes? Nothing. Even if Zimmerman had been found guilty, what was really gained? Nothing. In no way do I mean to belittle or detract from the sad loss of Trayvon's life, but can we be brutally honest for a moment?

We all know that people of all kinds commit crimes; that's beside the point here.
We all know that when we talk about "black crime", we're not talking about the majority of black Americans.
We all know that racism, police brutality, and corrupt politicians are continuing problems. But they are not the biggest problems at hand.
If you dismiss my observations simply on the basis that I'm white (a creepy-ass cracker?), you've got no standing at all calling me a racist or whatever; if fact it only reflects on you. If I'm wrong, just explain why you think so.
All that being said . . .

Every day in the inner cities and ghettos all over America, young black men are killing other young black men at a terrifying rate. Good people within the neighborhood feel like hostages while gang bangers and thugs roam freely outside. Drugs, crime, and unemployment are ubiquitous. Song after song by black artists glorify disrespecting women, gluttonous materialism, and disregard for others to the point of violence. The prison industry profits while its dungeons teem with young blacks more than any other group. So where are the nationwide protests? Where is the media outrage? Why this double standard that seems to say - true or not - that the only black life worth being upset about is one taken by a non-black? I ask because this is the very thing that is the problem: The death of Trayvon Martin, though tragic, is but a drop in an ocean in the larger issues concerning race and crime in black America, yet few are addressing these issues with anywhere near the passion that has been generated over this single case. So what's up? What's going on here?

Over seventy people were shot over the 4th of July weekend this year in Chicago alone, over thirty of whom died. Almost all were black, several of whom were innocent children and toddlers. Has anyone shown the same outrage and compassion for them too? Are all these deaths less worthy of attention and outrage because both the victim and the perp are black? And if not, then why the silence?

In a better world, the existing culture of victim-hood and despair would be thrown aside as the self defeating lie that it is and replaced with a Renaissance of black American culture. The existing black leadership that thrives on the anger and the sense of helplessness of the people it claims to represent would be cast away and replaced with strong leaders that would focus on the positive and help their communities strive to achieve their full potential. Begin to rally together not to protest others, but instead to unite as a community, and you have overcome the biggest problem of all.

But until then, what really changes? Nothing.

Everyone should listen to what West and O'Mara said about the media and people who made this case into something it wasn't.
They said exactly what needed to be said.

This should be yet another learning experience about sensationalistic and erroneous crap in our news organizations, but it won't be.
There's no liberal media conspiracy, but there's a conspiracy to do what gets ratings.

PsiChick: Pichu0102: Anyone who celebrates this should be shunned.
Anyone who threatens him should be prosecuted.
Anyone who thinks this means "open season on whatever minority I don't like" should be prosecuted.
Violent rioters should be prosecuted.

Furthermore, everyone should be depressed. A kid is dead, his family is scarred, and a man's life was thrown into chaos and will likely be haunted by this for the rest of his life.

No one wins no matter what happens. My main concern was that people would celebrate this trial's conclusion, despite what a horrible thing that is to celebrate, and I was proven right.

Uh...he brought that one on himself...

/If you're Random Dumbfark, sure, you might not know that following a teen boy in the middle of the night is a stupid idea. Every Trayvon cheerleader gets this wrong. Trayvon Martin started the fight.

According to the man who shot him you mean?

As opposed to the fantasy stories made up by the race industry?  Yes.  Sad to say, but they went by the evidence presented in a court of law.

So you accept unquestioningly that Martin started the fight despite the fact that the only evidence comes from the man who shot him, whos freedom relies on claiming self defense, but everything else is 'fantasy' made up by the 'race industry'. Yep, you sound like a reasonable individual sound of mind. What the fark is the race industry anyway?

That's just retarded sir.

Martin's GF, whom he spent the last 30+ minutes of his life talking to, told the court that Martin told her he was going to take care of that {racist term for a white person} that was following him.  She advised him not to (not like the 911 dispatcher who just said "we don't need you to do that" which is code for a police order to NOT doing something).

ThatDarkFellow: Looking at all these idiots on Twitter crying foul should make you terrified if you're ever falsely charged with a crime. It's a miracle they found a group who objectively weighed the evidence when most people out there apparently can't think and reason after being given facts.

Well, they weighed the evidence that was available to them.  They didn't get to hear Trayvon's side of the story obviously.  Personally, I think the police bungled the investigation right from the start and thus the prosecution didn't have enough to get a conviction.  That's the way the system works and it's probably good it works that way.  But it still leaves a sour taste in your mouth.

ChaosStar: Even going out and getting her gun from the car wasn't against the law if it was her place.

It technically wasn't her home. Her and her SO had separated, and she was living elsewhere, and she had a restraining order taken out against him. She went over there thinking he wasn't home, and he was.

And you can't leave a confrontation, grab a gun, and return with it. That is not "standing your ground" under any definition of the term, or the self-defense laws of any state. The fact that she was able to get away and returned with a firearm, and the fact that the 911 call her SO was on where she could clearly be heard saying "I got something for you" and then shooting.....

Like the Zimmerman case, this is not the civil rights case people are looking for.

TsukasaK: bigsteve3OOO: If you feel safe enough to shoot a warning shot.....you do not feel in danger enough to use a deadly weapon.

Problem is that it creates a perverse incentive to kill someone over possibly scaring them off. If I fire off to the side of someone purposely, I've only "endangered" whatever that gun was pointing at.

Put another way, if I point a gun to my left in such a way that you are not in front of it, you are not in danger, law be damned. Bullets do not work that way.

I kind of wonder how much of a thing it is to have someone with a gun be approached threateningly by someone who doesn't think they'll shoot. Pretty stupid thing to do, but we're talking about both criminals, and Florida.

If you use a gunshot to scare someone off you are acting reckless.

I don't think he's necessarily expressing a legal opinion.  Zimmerman, regardless of the trial verdict, took actions that ultimately resulted in him killing a teenager.  Sounds like the teenager made plenty of bad decisions too, but nonetheless, no one should have died that night.

How do you know that Zimmerman didn't start it by confronting that kid, the kid was scared because the creepy cracker was following him and defended himself and when Zimmerman started to get his ass kicked he killed him? That's just as plausible. Only those two know and one of them is dead so...
Seems to me that they have just sent a msg that if you want to kill someone, just start some shiat, start to get your ass kicked and then you can kill them now. Not saying that is what Zimmerman did, just saying looks like you could get away with doing that now.

Well playing Devils advocate for a minute, lets suppose you are right about that, Its the prosecutions burden to prove that 100% beyond the shadow of a doubt, not the defenses burden to prove 100% beyond a shadow of a doubt it didn't happen.

That's why the state lost. You can't really prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt, ever, if it comes down to your word against a dead guys with no witnesses. The state will most likely always lose cases like this. All the prosecution had was an appeal to emotion. They couldn't prove who "started" it.

All that twaddle about Uniting rather than dividing the country is over.  And you were a fool if you ever believed it.

Every time I think "this post depresses me more than any other post possible could", the ante keeps going up.  And up.

At this point I'm done.  If it weren't so late I'd call my parents and thank them for raising me right.

Even though they both grew up white kids in Detroit, even though they both lived through the 67 riots (in my Mom's case, with her brothers taking turns with shotguns on the porch), even though I grew up in the suburbs with somewhere around 4 black kids in my high school (decent populations from various Asian countries, India/Pakistan, the Middle East, and a scattering of South Americans - but African American, no) as they and their siblings joined the white flight out of the city as soon as they could -

- even though they could have used any excuse to do so, they raised me well enough where I don't automatically assume the President of the motherf--king United States of America is trying to incite race riots to win elections.  Even if I don't necessarily agree with him all of the time.

And they raised me to judge a person on their character, and to question *myself* if I catch myself making assumptions before shown evidence.

And in general, to take anything someone tells me as gospel with a goddamn heavy grain of salt until I do my own due diligence and come to my own opinions on the merit of what I'm being told.

So Mom and Dad - and my aunts and uncles, because I've never heard such crap even from my relatives who didn't vote for Obama (except one douchebag uncle by marriage who was ignored until an aunt broke and loudly called him out to the support of everyone else) - and my grandmas, both of whom didn't learn English until their late teens, whose neighborhoods were torn by riots and the decades long aftermath, but whose closest friends when their kids had moved out and their husbands had died were both African American women neighbors, and both pairs always looked out and cared for the other even as the divide around them grew -

Thank you.

So explain to me why Ostupid wanted to make this a national case before the last election.  Why was he commenting on it at all?  He manages to avoid talking about all the black on black violence without implying that it's a direct attack on his family.  "If I had a son..."

And why did he call Cambridge cops "stupid" back in 2009?  Because he sees these kind of things as a political tool.
