Why can't we get this guy in race control?

Outtaphase: Why can't we get this guy in race control?

Well, OK that whole Marco and Andretti Racing thing in general might be a bit of a conflict. But guys like this that have integrity? Oh wait, they have multiple DUI convictions and don't look good for the sport. Who else?

To be fair, things are still developing through the evening. For instance, Ryan Briscoe is now out tomorrow due to a broken wrist. Crazy Carlos Munoz is in for him in for Panther's ride tomorrow.

Now that this decision has been reversed, Barnhart is as likely to now decide to penalize Power for "aggressive driving" or "avoidable contact" as he was to nail Franchitti for blocking.

Will Bourdais get a replacement trophy?

Will they change their procedure for the fail-prone standing start they've just decided to redo?

I don't know. You don't know. Indycar sure as hell doesn't know.

What the hell happened? It used to almost be a top racing series.

The sport has been doing much better lately. Times are tight amongst decent team diversity. If Always Bad Coverage keeps their contract (through 2017 I believe?) for the major races it won't go far, IMHO. NBCSN is doing great on the other races but the poor season lead-in coverage might cause potential fan base to stay away.

Those are the Cliffnotes of Indycar.

Now understand that Brian Barnhart, the guy they put back up in the tower this one weekend making all the final calls on rules is a throwback to the Tony George era that we just got rid of. He was the one who decided Indycars can restart on slicks on a damp New Hampshire oval. It was he who was the target of Will Power's infamous double bird when the inevitable result came to be. His random vacillations from ironclad dictator about blocking to complete laxity over other, more dangerous maneuvers paralyzed the field at some tracks, but encouraged aggression at others as drivers tried to adapt to his bizarre view of what racing should be, often leading to random spurts of erratic driving behavior. FFS, the dude feuded with Helio Castroneves over this shiat. Happy Helio. He was the guy who had the final call to bend the rules at Las Vegas. Drivers called desperately for something that would decrease downforce on the cars to break up the pack somewhat.

Brian Barnhart is a throwback to the bad-old-days, when Tony George and his regime were cocky over their recent defeat of Champcar, even though they had spent a decade and a half destroying the sport. He was finally put on desk duty last year, as Tony's influence faded. I hope after this comeback weekend for him, that's where he'll farkin' stay.

For anyone who may be interested, here is a link to a podcast with Bob Jenkins. They talk about his early days in radio, then doing PA and radio at Indy, then TV, and post-TV.

Generally speaking, it's much preferable to the admins to submit sports related threads the morning of the event. That way they can be greened and timed to go "live" prior to the event but still allow TF folks to get an early discussion started.

INDYCAR confirmed that there will be 2 attempts at the standing start.  Data from yesterday helps alleviate overheating concerns.

They are gonna try it again, if nobody's engine stalls this time

Yes. The original plan was to have the regular rolling start for race 2 but after yesterday's failure they changed their mind and want to try it again today.

Has F1 ever had the cars line up, abort, and then do a rolling start? If so, yes.

Unless you meant "Will there be lots of carbon on the track before the first turn?" in which case the answer is also Yes.

I remember last year I think it was in Canada that there was an aborted start before the lights went out, and they did another parade lap and did a standing start, they just took a lap off the board. Could be wrong though.

I kinda wanna see NASCAR do a standing start.

I liked it, but they shouldn't have put it in split screen.
