That gives me an idea. If I'm ever on the jury for a high profile case I'm going to troll the media with inane and misleading questions for the judge.

"Your honor, are the charges applicable to reptilians IN HUMAN FORM?"

"Is 'manslaughter' the same thing if it is committed against a woman?  Shouldn't it be called 'womanslaughter'?"

"Could you re-read the medical examiner's testimony backwards and with an English accent so I can hear any hidden messages?"

"We the jury find the defendant guilllllllll...Gilly is my favorite character from SNL.  We find the defendant guilty of second degree....lookin' good."

They want to find him guilty and are trying to find a way to do that.

I've listened to the position that it doesn't matter that Zimmerman got out of his vehicle, but that precipitated the whole thing. If he drives on this never happens. Simply the act of him getting out of his car to confront Trayvon should precipitate the manslaughter charge. Whether there was intent or not, he caused the whole thing to go down by his actions. If our laws are not clear enough on that aspect, we should clarify them.

I hope fat head gets 30 years in prison. He considers himself Hispanic so that he can join a prison gang. Hispanic gangs are notoriously tough. Tougher than the Aryans. May e he'll be put in solitary confinement. Until the day he kills himself. Either way I hope this is the end of his pathetic life.

Easy there, calm down

NewportBarGuy: They want to find him guilty and are trying to find a way to do that.

Yeah. If they are looking closely at the elements of second-degree murder vs. manslaughter, it could suggest that they've rejected the self-defense argument (since, as O'Mara stressed during his summation, self-defense would cover both crimes, and would end the jury's work). Or, it could just mean that the jury is looking at the elements first, and will address self-defense afterwards. It's always dangerous to try to read into jury questions, but Zimmerman and his team can't be happy about this question.

What's misleading? The jurors were told that they could consider convicting him for manslaughter if they felt that the evidence wasn't sufficient for a second degree murder conviction. Of course, they could vote for acquital as well, because that's an option for them too. Asking for clarification is not trolling nor misleading. It's common in felony cases.

What's misleading?

I mean I would be tempted to mislead the media about what we're arguing about in the jury room so all the talking heads and rabid ranters can go off in the wrong direction. Like asking "how far in does the finger have to go before a 'scratch' becomes a 'pick'?" when the real dispute is over whether the ID of the alleged nose picker was correct, or we've decided on that verdict and are arguing over the boyfriend-stealing incident.

No, but if you've been following the trial as I have you would know that the judge told the jurors that manslaughter was something they could consider as well.

And for the record, the defense attorneys don't have to prove anything in a case, whether it's this one or a case in another state. It falls on the proscecution to provide evidence & give the juror sufficient proof to convict. The burden of proof falls solely on them.

You stated a prior legal act which has no relevance to the later illegal act should be considered. How many times have you gotten out of a vehicle and it resulted in death? I just want to know if you're a hypocrite or just intellectually lacking to not understand that.

Bathia_Mapes: Completely irrelevant. That has zero to do with this case.

Yes, that's a given. I'm drawing a parallel argument to hopefully make the prior poster realize his error.

There's been a lot of online activity from people who are camped out at the courthouse saying they are going to "protest" no matter the verdict.  That kind of thing can easily turn into a riot.  It would only take a few provocateurs to kick things into overdrive.
