I didn't watch these and I'm not Subby, but if you haven't seen them, these are pretty boss.  Original actors and everything.

I've seen Phase 2 with James T. Frankenkirk and I like them, I think they do good work. But the acting is always pretty rough; this was pretty uncanny. And that guy can channel Shatner in a way Chris Pine sure doesn't. They even worked in a couple of awkward musical numbers and yes, it only took about 1 second to realize who was doing the computer's voice. If this could be considered canon that would open up a million questions.

And the joke with the "special guest star" was funny and geeky enough not to suck.

i especially liked that Apollo was played by the original actor...took me awhile to catch on...the voice gave him away. well done indeed.

I'd be much more interested in a "fan film" starring Mythbusters' Scottie.

Vic Mignogna directs the series and stars as Captain Kirk.

NOPE.

/All in favor of decapitating Mignogna with a bat'leth?

I didn't even know she had a son, much less that he's old enough to start doing his own MythBusting. Time flies.

Still waiting for that episode of Mythbusters to tackle that TOS episode "Spock's Brain".

Holy moly I was making fun of this and then I watched the whole thing.

Awesome job, people!

I really liked that!

Well, that was geeky fun. :-)

/Been watching Stark Trek since I was 11 when it first was broadcast in 1967.

Are they lip syncing? The voices just sound really off, it drove me crazy. Some of the acting is grating too, but some of them were great like the old man that was singing. That part felt like I was watching an actual episode.

A holodeck on a Constitution class starship though? Really?

Yeegads, the writing on this was awful. There was a writer's guide for TOS that is widely available on the Internet, they should have read it instead of coming up with this fan-fic mishmash. Two big things they got wrong here are using technobabble (TOS did NOT use technobabble) and undermining Kirk's authority. There is one command chair on the 1701. The opening was pointless and not consistent with the TOS or the movies - what's the point of carefully replicating the sets and sounds if they are going to mush up the series like this?

No comment on the acting - obviously this is a labor of love and the people behind it are not going to hire people to replace themselves on camera. I get that.

I would put this episode easily in the upper half of TOS episodes. Did you ever watch that show? Wasn't it great when Kirk went up against Wyatt Earp?

So make it better and make your own sets and hire your cast and write your own script and rent the cameras and lightiing and feed and house all the cast and crew for a few weeks.

Hold your breath until it's done. Please.

Wrong Mythbuster. Wrong series. Wrong character.

Should have been Kari portraying "Voyager's" Seven of Nine.

Well, I watched the whole thing. Very nice mostly, there were moments I forgot I wasn't watching TOS. And yes, that Kirk blows Chris "Balloon Hands" Pine away. I could swear it was just like watching Shatner in the scene in his quarters with his shirt off. Spock and Bones obviously aren't perfect, but I doubt a convincing DeForest Kelley could be found at any rate. Only a couple of points in the script and the direction did something seem a little odd. First of all, the personal contact between crew members in a few spots made me realize how, in TOS, they almost never touched each other in a familiar way, like an arm around the back or a hand on the shoulder. Also, Jim would never leave a decision like whether to remove the organ or not up to Bones, he would make that decision himself, and then order Bones to do it. Other than those minor complaints though, I would say a job well done.

Cool to see this make Fark. I watched it a few weeks back and liked it a lot too. Only a few small bits looked amateur, otherwise it's a top notch fan film. The guy playing Kirk looks more like Kirk Douglas to me, but he's good enough. He evokes Shatner fairly well in the long shots IMHO. Chris Doohan is awesome though. I think it's so cool that he's doing the character at all, much less so well.

Um, is no one going to talk about how hot Michele Specht is? Curvy red head FTW!

Thank you Google...

Okay, that was awesome... Vic Mignogna nails Shatner Not. The. Voice, thank the gods, but every facial tick, wink, look... shaved sweaty chest...  The quick step up the stairs to the turbo lift from the chair...
That was a very quick 51 minutes(!)
Yea some of the acting was crap, go watch some TOS and get back to me with an Emmy winner.

Just so that everyone knows, here are some facts about Vic Mignogna:

-He has been banned from multiple conventions for acting like an utter asshole to the staff
-He is well-known for perving on underage fans
-He claims to be "straight-edge" but has been observed getting wasted on stolen drinks
-He once agreed to appear at a depressed fan's birthday party to cheer her up, but blew it off at the last minute to make a stage appearance elsewhere

I mean, I know that a lecherous, egotistical asshole would seem like a good choice for Kirk, but I just really loathe this guy.

I saw this earlier today before it hit Fark.  I found it superior to the "New Voyages" guys in a couple of ways, The sets are better, but more importantly, the camerawork and lighting are much closer, even down to the aspect ratio.  Scotty's son is incredible, and I like this guy's Kirk.. he also looks like Jack Lord in a few flashes here and there, which isn't unusual actually: Lord was on the short list for the original Kirk role but got Five-O instead, and the two have similar facial geography, hair, and acting styles.

I see they are using at least two different guys for Doctor McCoy. The chubby one kept making me think it was Andy Richter. The tall one is a little better, but is still missing something DeForest used to project. The Mythbuster guy was actually the worst in the cast; he's trying not to break up laughing in the scene when he's rescued by the transports but mourning the lost buddy out on the EVA.  He gets better in the bridge scenes, but he's still too tentative and shy.  The Spock actor is weak, playing it a little small.  Script-wise I liked it mostly but.. I also found it highly illogical that Spock and Kirk would just leave the remains of the "Realm" floating around without looking closer at the wreckage to learn about its technology. Spock can't resist a puzzle, especially one like this.  Scotty would want to analyze it as well, normally.

Overall though I really liked it.

They broke the playwright "Checkov's gun rule" by demoing the holodeck in the cold open, then not using it for anything else in the story. That was awkward and could have been cut to use for another episode.

I found it amusing to introduce ship's counselors in TOS, and I don't know if they meant to show it was a dumb idea, or just that it was in the early stages.  This character screamed of "Mary Sue" however.

What is a star trek?

I started watching this on my PC, then dragged my wife into the living room to re-start it on the big TV.  The visual fidelity to TOS was incredible, right down to the physics-defying, cheesy FX.    The simple morality messages were spot-on I'll forgive the violations of canon by the holodeck and Michele Speck (especially Michele Speck). The acting was a bit too heavy on the campy side, but for a first effort, I was quite pleased.

I question your definition of "facts," seeing as the only one you back up with any evidence shows an "underage fan" who appears to be in her late 20s."

Having said that, my problem with this guy is 51 years old, and the Kirk he's playing is ~35.

Just so everyone know, Vic Mignogna is the voice of:

Along with about a billion other Anime characters.

But I will always think of him as Ed.

You know, it's a free fan flick and the dude pulled of the best James T. Kirk since Shatner and that cannot be an easy task. I am gathering that comic-con fans dislike him and ok, he probably is a dick, that's probably why he pulls off a good Captain Kirk.

But the funny part is the comic-con dorks who want to report some guy no one knows, because he has a bad reputation in their tiny little world that no one cares about. We are talking about Star Trek, dumbasses, no one cares that he has short man syndrome.

2013-07-14 07:53:13 AM
and by the way, why do you think it's important to smear this man's reputation online? That seems horribly immature and quite honestly petty.

ST: Of Gods and Men

You should check this out; fan made based on the TOS stories (don't want to spoil, but several episodes and characters are involved)

What rocks is that it included a large number of Star Trek cast members, including Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koening, and Tim Russ. It was well written, and while some of the effects are campy, it's a fun watch.

I interrupted my viewing to say the same. I wish all Trek's "alternative universes" were this solid.

And no, I don't mind the guy doing Kirk. I've seen much worse from professional impressionists, and everyone cast has the same vague resemblance to the originals.

And "Scotty's" crap Scottish accent is authentically crap here, too!

They got quite a bit very, very right.

Some of the performances were shaky, but have you watched season one of TNG lately? It took them most of a year to settle down into their roles.

The sets, camera work, sound track, costumes, and visual effects were spot on.

The story was good, and had the Roddenberry feel that the reboot movies lack.

Good Jorb!
