It's just pretty sad when The Fast and the Furious, a franchise I only saw one movie of was the most entertaining of the summer. And Iron Man 3 I guess.

Yes, this.  Best movie I've seen all summer.  The only movie I'm holding out (faint) hope for being better than this is Elysium.

Clock Spider Jerusalem: anyone who doesnt like this film should choke on a giant fluffy unicorn.

It's better than a film of its type should be (non-Pixar animated movie cash-in sequel).  But it was still not particularly memorable.  Carrell was good, and I love me some minions (see the Despicable Me Facebook page for a shot of the minions at a Bluth Banana Stand...), but, meh.

/felt the same way about Monsters University.

Those farking minions were everywhere during the ad campaign for this damn movie. The side of busses, buildings, billboards, and even THE FREAKING SKY. No seriously, they had a Blimp in the shape of a minion flying around LA last night. Farking ridiculous. No wonder it did so well. People were practically brainwashed to see it.

No I haven't.  It looks like a "robot vs giant monster"  movie but what some people don't understand is that it's the execution that matters. So it might be awesome or it might suck like Transformers.

If it's the execution that matters, then Pacific Rim was snu-snu

It always pays off to investing good minions. That's why Gru knows all of his by their first names.

My first thought on the trailer was "I liked it better when it was called Neon Genesis Evangelion."

We wait until movies go to the cheap old movie house around here. $3 for a matinee. Plus they still have the old sparkly curtains and interior. They don't have a lot of seats for each screen either so it feels more like a really big living room. We saw the last Harry Potter movie and while over half filled, it was completely silent for the Snape's death scene.

There's also another theatre a bit further away, the Clova, a restored old-school family owned place that has you bring your own giant bowl which you chip in a couple bucks to fill with popcorn. Also cheaper than the big new places.

Good!

I had a ball with my kids. It was fun laughing at fart jokes right along with them.
Last time I remember having that much fun at a kids movie with the kids was either Scooby Doo or Lilo and Stitch.
(Pixar movies aren't really considered "fun", since they usually have more of a story)

Pacific Rim was awesome though quite over the top.

Pacific Rim looks on track to make less in its opening weekend than Lone Ranger did, with a comparable budget. Why isn't anyone talking about what a huge flop it is?
It's a giant robot vs. giant monster movie. But it doesn't have the built in audience recognition that Transformers had. It's an English-language version of a Japanese monster movie, as far as the general public is concerned. Plus, it's not a movie you're gonna take the kids to.

Because it wasn't really marketed very well, it doesn't have an above-the -title name like Depp and people are mistakenly comparing it with Transformers.

No, and I haven't seen Despicable Me 2, either. But that doesn't alter my point whatsoever. I didn't make any quality judgements.

I will undoubtedly see it eventually at home... the previews and excerpts don't excite me too much (wrong demographic -I'm an old fark) but no one gives two shiats what I think anyway :-)

This is why we can't have nice things people!

I saw it and really enjoyed it. It was exactly what I want in a summer action movie without trying to tack on some half thought out deep meaning.

I just finished seeing it with my wife, and we were a little underwhelmed, actually. The middle fight scene was well done, but it would have been a lot cooler to have seen one during the day. The bug final battle just seemed kind of flat compared to the earlier scene. The comic relief was actually surprisingly good, though, with the It's Always Sunny in Torchwood team.

Mild spoilers below:

The general plot also seemed a little too much like Independence Day when it came to the motivation of the aliens and the way they were taken out. The whole speech before the final fight even felt about the same.

It had some moments that were a hell of a lot of fun, especially in the big Hong Kong fight, but something just didn't gel with the rest for us. It was just missing that extra something that The Avengers had last summer.

I watched Pacific Rim.  Lots of love for anime in that movie.  If you don't watch anime there will be some scenes which are just odd or seem like bad acting.  It was all deliberate.

Saw DM2, good movie, it's just the fact I was hoping Robots and Minions would beat that uberdouche known as Adam Sandler.
