Ral: And what is a 5-year-old doing playing outside unsupervised?

Another thought: the suspect is old enough that this is not likely to be the first time he's done something like this.  He may never have been caught, and has finally gotten careless.

City Boy?

*checks profile*

Yep.

Mind you, I'm not disagreeing with you, but you do have to understand that not everyone lives in paranoia and/or in an area where it's unsafe to let a 5-year-old outside unsupervised.

Oh yeah. We also taught girls basic self defense and to yell YOU ARE NOT MY MOM/DAD because people ignore a screaming kid.

With a harsh warning to never do that to your own parent, because one little twerp did. It works. Feel so bad for her dad who will probably never forget the hell his daughter put him through as she threw a tantrum but yep.

And even the 5 yo day only campers got that training.

I didn'y play in my yard unsupervised in the '50's. I lived in the street unsupervised along with the rest of the kids.

quatchi: Took me a sec but good one, Subby.

Good also on the boys who at got her back alive to her folks.

Limpy McPedocreep needs to be found. I'm thinking soonish is best.

Before he's found by another gang of teenage boys on bikes. The next crew might do more than just follow him.

If he's unlucky.

jdmac I am just glad nothing happened. If the Martin trial has taught us anything, it is that if some one is following you, punching them in the face is a reasonable response.

Not to threadjack, but literally no one believes that. The people who think Zimmerman is guilty don't think that is what happened, and the people who think that is what happened think Zimmerman is innocent.

(The people who think that probably isn't how it happened but can't actually prove it think Zimmerman deserved the not guilty verdict despite possibly actually being guilty. When we cant quite be sure what happened, we err on the side of not guilty.)

The vehicle is described as red-purplish or maroon . . .

How about "dark red" for the straight men in the population?

/or plum?

StreetlightInTheGhetto: I knew which houses to bolt to if a stranger approached me sketchily - hell there were signs the local PTA gave vetted parents (usually already school volunteers or retired teachers) to put in their window. If you were in trouble or someone else was you could bolt there. At least one on every block iirc.

Block parents. We had them too. Good idea is good.

Only molestation case I ever heard of growing up involved a live in relative of the girl molested.

Pervy relative went to jail but only after years of abuse, unfortunately.

Why is it relevant to mention the approximated color of these teenagers' skins in the headline? TFA doesn't do it. It's almost as if subby finds it unexpected. Which is weird.

It's fairly clear the one hero boy enjoys Coke.

I'm sorry, but why shouldn't she be able to play in her own front yard unsupervised?

I do agree with you that this isn't the first time this major creep has done this to a child.

Listen, you can live your life in hopes that everything will always be as it SHOULD be...or you can protect your child and understand that there are real farking monsters out there that will do unspeakable things to said child given half a chance.

Statistically? No there aren't. I'll no more "protect" my daughter from the horrors of the big blue room because of the remote possibility of a rape clown stealing her than I make her stay inside lest she get struck by lightning. I do a realistic risk/benefit analysis, and act accordingly. My daughter is far more likely to be molested by a family member than a stranger, but I don't keep her locked in her room when Grama and Grampa come to visit.

I do not allow my 5 year old to play out the front without adult supervision.  Not because of the very low possibility of a creep but because at 5 she is still prone to being very silly and doesn't think when she is playing halfway in the middle of the road.   Also she is in comparison to most 5 year old that I have seen very very mature for her age.    I allow her to play in the yard without adult supervision and when she becomes more road smart,  I will allow her to play out the front without supervision.   From my observations any one who allows children under 8 years of age to play out the front without adult supervision or a very older child i.e 14 + is asking for trouble.

My mother let me play outside unsupervised since I was 5 years old. I had tons of fun climbing trees, playing with my friends, racing my tricycle and collecting things like acorns and flowers.

People say this sort of thing all the time,  but it usually turns out that they were older i.e 8 not 5.

But of course my mother was not stupid. She let me play outside on these conditions:

1) That I not stray too far away. I could only play within sight of my house. Once when I was 6 I followed some friends to a playground several blocks away, and when Mom found out she wouldn't let me outside for a few weeks. Of course when I got older the rules changed where I was allowed to wander as long as it was still within the neighborhood.     Most of your friends lived close which is why you didn't go far.  Also your mum was watching you so you were supervised

2) That I NEVER go into anyone's house/car/property, even if I knew the people who owned them. I got invited to friends houses all the time, but Mom was adamant that I never go into peoples homes unless she or dad was with me.    Your a one in a million.  It's raining heavily,  you have mud all over you and your invited in from freezing cold whether but you just stand out side.    Sure mate.

3) That I NEVER talk to strangers (Duh!) If a stranger (man or woman) tried to talk to me, I was told to run back home. If an adult or older child friend of the family tried to talk to me, I was instructed to go home and let mom or dad deal with them.   Your 5 but the only one in the world, once again,  whereby the well my name is Mr twiddlefingers,  so you know me now doesn't change them into a non stranger. You can teach 5 year old's about stranger danger but they don't have the matured cognitive ability to really.

5) That I stay away from the streets and cars. Firstly to keep me from being run over, secondly to keep any perv from snatching me away easily.  Once again the only 5 year old with the matured cognitive ability to keep that in mind at all times.   Scientific evidence has proven that a child needs to be around 8 for that to fully sink in.  They can do it when being reminded but when playing and having fun it slips out the other end.Which is also why I think you were older then you remember.

4) That I always come home before sundown.

These conditions were reasonable and strictly enforced so that I was still able to have a happy and healthy childhood without having overprotective parents. Mom didn' ...

Now I have no way of knowing if what your saying is correct,  but as a parent what your saying and the maturity your obviously attributing to yourself I have not seen in any 5 year old in my entire life.  In an 8 year old yes but that is the youngest.

The boys are heroes.
The little girl is a light skinned Hispanic, not white.
The headline was certainly clever.
Thank you submitter.
God bless all the kids involved. I hope the little girl recovers well.

When will these Skittles addicted African-American boys stop terrorizing innocent white folk with their nighttime snack purchasing walks and their bicycle carjackings of our ice cream buying senior citizens?
