(CBS Sports)   Padres almost pulled off the hidden ball trick on the Giants last night; Pablo Sandoval was tagged out at second, but time had been called, so the tag occurred during a dead ball situation (w/ gif of play)   (cbssports.com) divider line 13

Huh.  By rule, in a dead ball situation a baserunner may leave the base but must, when time is resumed, tag up prior to advancing to the next base in a live ball situation, but may advance in upon catcher's interference, which may occur in a live ball situation (i.e., tripping a baserunner going to first) or in a dead ball situation (failing to remove a loose impediment from teh field of play, meaning a bat or in some cases, catcher's equipment), the exception being a balk, which is a live play until the balk is called, at which point the play is deemed dead and all baserunners, indepedently of whether they have tagged up as referenced above, advance one base (however if a baserunner passes another baserunner, it is not deemed an out if that occurs in dead ball scenario but will if the play is live).  The other exception is if the ball is ruled trapped (the fielder must signal as such by raising his hand) then the baserunners cannot advance (dead ball) unless the fielder resumes play before the field umpire rules the ball unplayable.

Since time had been called and the ball was dead nothing noteworthy at all happened.

Personally, I'm looking forward to a headline in December like "Offensive lineman rushes for a 99 yard touchdown, except it happened during halftime."

What the f*ck is the point of having a gif where you just see the tag instead of what they did to misdirect with the ball?

Also, wouldn't the pitcher standing around doing dick all away from the rubber be a tip off that he doesn't have the ball?

The Padres illegally enticed him off base with some tasty bamboo shoots.

On a side note, once time is called....when is time back in?

I mean, the home plate umpire might point at the pitcher in some instances, but do they do that every time? Is it when the pitcher puts foot to rubber?

5.11 After the ball is dead, play shall be resumed when the pitcher takes his place on the pitcher's plate with a new ball or the same ball in his possession and the plate umpire calls "Play." The plate umpire shall call "Play" as soon as the pitcher takes his place on his plate with the ball in his possession.

I recall the Marlins pulling this trick against the Dbacks in 04, I think.  We had a man on third and he got called out thanks to the HBT.

Just sat there staring at the TV saying motherfarker.

Isn't Sandoval the fat fark that couldn't get his ass up to the plate, so Posey got called out for batting out of order?

Chickenshiat baseball. I'm glad it didn't work and the Padres should be embarrassed they tried.
