They're deliberating today. I assume they'll have tomorrow off, though, if they don't reach a verdict.

For once I'm not at work, so I can really DRINK!

Though we're really just waiting now.  Everything that can be said has been said, but in general I'd like to sum up my opinion once more.  This whole deal sucks all around.  Two knuckleheads collided in the worst possible way, and now a young man is dead and another man's future is in question.  Either one of these two could have made different decisions, but they didn't so here we are.  It's not murder, not even manslaughter, it's just NOT there.  But it still sucks, and I hope that Martin's family can find some peace and proceed with their lives.  I hope Zimmerman can live this down some day, but that's his demon to wrestle with.

How dare you be thoughtful, reasonable, and overwhelmingly intelligent about this?! This is FARK! I demand you either retract your statement or at least misspell 33% of your words.

Happy to oblige.  OMG your tupid, look the guy hunted down a kid and attacked him, now he's claiming stand your ground?  He was ORDRED by police not to follow him and disobeyed, that's TREASON!

I hope he does get acquitted here.

It will set a precedent that you can pick a fight with someone and then kill them for fighting back.

Could go either way.

One things for certain, even if he gets acquitted, he's not going to get away with it. Zimmerman will have to look over his shoulder for the rest of his life.

My dad lives in Florida, and it scares me to think that somebody would try to hurt him because of a jury's decision.

But you have to do it the ninja way. Pick a fight without leaving no injuries. Zimmerman is a ninja god!

Reason and logic would dictate a not guilty verdict on all charges.  However, logic doesn't always win out when you have John Guy pleading with the jury to ignore the evidence and "go with your common sense".  Some of those jurors were tearing up, and that's pretty low.

It is indeed a terrible and tragic situation and while I could see reason for him to be acquitted, I'm hoping for manslaughter. He engaged the situation and escalated it to the end we see. Zimmerman was the adult in this situation and instigated every part of it. Had he done as instructed by law enforcement or just plain common sense, the kid wouldn't be dead.

I work with and train adults who work with legitimately troubled youth. At some point you have to own the role you played in the situation. If you are not equipped and capable of handling the situation, walk away and find someone who is. If you do choose to involve yourself, the outcomes rests on you and the youth involved, and since we will never hear Trayvon's side of things, we can only go with what we know: an uninformed, untrained, unfit individual started a situation that turned violent, regardless of who brought it to that level, it is clear who began the situation and who ended it, and for that he deserves some harsh discipline.

So if you were walking to someone's house and an armed man who was told by the police not to follow you, follows you then draws his weapon in the course of events, you'd be okay with that?

The one who made the wrong decision was Zimmerman. All he had to do was stay put. And how does an armed man let himself get within reach of someone anyways?

I'd bet that he's found not guilty anyways.

Fortunately for Zimmerman, in the event he is acquitted, he will be immune from civil liability under Florida law.

Muta: So we all agree that Zimmerman's claim that he was "defending himself" is pretty much BS?

No,  I don't doubt that he was defending himself from Martin.  The problem is that he initiated the confrontation,  negating the rightful claim of self defense.  You cannot, first of all ignore the 911 operator telling you to stay back and not do anything stupid then proceed to do something stupid, stalk a kid,  pick a fight with him then shoot him and claim self defense.  Everything that happened did so because Zimmerman provoked it.

The fact that Martin is a better fighter then Zimmerman is irrelevant.  Self defense requires that you are not the one initiating the situation.

StoPPeRmobile: Then the remaining family sues them into oblivion.

If he is acquitted, in Florida, the law shields him from a wrongful death suit.

2013-07-13 12:10:49 PM
Zimmerman follows him around (stupid but not illegal)
Martin assaults Zimmerman (stupid and illegal)
Zimmerman shoots Martin in self defense (stupid and legal)

Guilty of stupidity but not guilty of murder

Nabb1: Are they deliberating today, or did they get the weekend off?

Their problem is "weekend off" means sitting alone in a cheap motel room with no TV, radio, telephone, newspapers, or internet.  If I was on the jury and it was up to me I would be deliberating 16 hours a day seven days a week so I could reach a verdict and get the hell out of there.

2013-07-13 12:11:15 PM
If they don't find him guilty how are all of those folks gonna get those new big screen TV's that they've been planning on?

I disagree. Trayvon was a teenager being followed by an adult and that is supported by both Zimmerman's statements and that of the girl he was talking on the phone to. Fight or flight kicked in and he ran. That tells me right there this kid was scared as any kid would be. Should he have risked this guy finding him by running home and leading some creepy farker not only to his house but where his younger brother was? Trayvon Martin is dead because Zimmerman wanted to play cop. He had the MMA training, the gun, and the attitude that "this punk ain't getting away this time". His actions initiated a series of events that killed an innocent teenager. Period.

It's funny, you always have a bunch of the J4T crowd come in early with only raw emotion and no factual evidence to back any of their claims.  Then they dwindle as the thread progresses because... racism!

He didn't. There is no special law for beating on people for looking at you funny. Trayvon started the violence, and escalated it. All of the evidence points to that.

There is no evidence to support that.

It's manslaughter in spirit, whatever the law says. Zimmerman ultimately caused the entire situation to happen by doing something dangerous and otherwise unacceptable - stalking a stranger while openly carrying a weapon. If something bad hadn't happened this time, it would have eventually. That being said, I doubt he'll be convicted of it.

This trial is happening because someone wanted to hurt someone because they were looking at them.

Fortunately the guy who was attacked by the guy who was offended that someone was looking at them was armed.

Reginald Denny Gonzalez in Miami might want to be careful if there is a not guilty verdict. The caucasian Reginald Denny didn't fare so well when there was a court decision that was disagreeable to the number two minority in the US.

The liberal "COEXIST" urbanites will be the first to suffer when the riots hit.  Your white guilt will not matter when the NBPP comes to kill your white babies.

So then two gang members shooting at each other should be legal?

Right if you can just use a gun because you feel threatened then why can't gang members (who are actually armed with a lethal weapon unlike Martin) just havengang wars through the street?
