Think of your half-arsed American sports as Hollywood blockbusters, and Tests as an HBO series.  The second one has time for proper plot twists . . .

So England all out with a lead of 310.

What can Anderson and Swan do with this wicket?

The Superbowl is a Hollywood blockbuster. The Stanley Cup Playoffs is an HBO series.

This is like watching Empire.

Cowan is going to get a Golden Pair. Book it. Done.

If Australia can get to, say, 2/100 I'll start to have some hope.

I can do that anytime I want. I don't need a sport for that.

When people get flummoxed by a cricket match lasting 4 or 5 days, I point them to golf tournaments.  If you watch wire to wire of a major tournament, that's a bigger investment of time than a cricket match.

Golf is just as boring and stupid too. Not to mention a waste of perfectly good land.

Watson was looking quite comfortable until recently.

Then a clumsy looking sweep, and a minute later he's almost caught at long on. Calm down, son.

I'm following this 5 day test as light relief from this 23 day bike race...

(No-one tell these these guys this is just the first of five 5-day games, with another five 5-day games in Australia in the winter)

Yep. Up to another 70 days of Ashes Tests over the next 6 months. Marvelous, as Richie would say.

Lovely cover drive by Rogers there.

Usually, yes, but this year they're reconfiguring the schedule to avoid the World Cup, so as a one-time thing they're back-to-back. The Brisbane Test starts on 20 November 2013

I was trying to think of a redeeming feature the Sky telecasts had - they're not even consistent about the order they write the number of runs and wickets in the on-screen score, as if cricket wasn't confusing enough atready - and there we go: no bloody Richie (no Greig either, although in fairness he's taken the standard Packer retirement plan).

That has to be the end of Cowan's Test career. He's just not good enough at this level, although he'll make a good journalist.

Usman Khawaja has to play at Lord's.

I was listening something on sports radio yesterday about "bull pen management" and it really summed up how absurdly pathetic baseball is. These guys pitch for thirty minutes in three days and they're broken men? I take back all I've said about NASCAR drivers not being athletes.

macadamnut: . These guys pitch for thirty minutes in three days and they're broken men?

Meanwhile 80 years ago Walter Johnson pitched both games, all 18 innings, of a double header. And he once pitched three complete games in 4 days. Today no pitcher would be allowed to try either of those no matter how physically capable of it he is.

There's something about Smith. Every time he plays an attacking shot (especially across the line) my instant thought is "He's out!". He doesn't inspire any confidence in me at all. He's got guts though.

I'm waiting for him to be out after the ball just nicks the bat and gets caught 8 feet away.

That sounds great.  I had to deal with the aftermath.  I used to bartend at a pub around the corner from Lord's.  The Ashes was like the entire Christmas season rolled up into a week.  Things would be quiet, and then suddenly we would be swamped by a wave of drunk, sunburnt, pissed-off Aussies.  Good times!  Sounds like it would have been fun to actually watch the thing, though.

And right there is what I was talking about yesterday re: overthrows and backing up the wicketkeeper.  Two fielders right up near the wicket - one of them should have dropped back as soon as that ball was hit.

Missed a chance to run him out, gave away a run.

I hear that on BBC County Cricket broadcasts all the time and it just infuriates me.  Between those and bowled extras, they account for 10% of the runs scored!

2013-07-13 12:03:41 PM
At this point, England need wickets.  If Australia can stay in, they only need 2 runs an over and they'll win.  England has to knock out the middle order and hope that Agar doesn't pull off another miracle.
