"Yeah... THAT was their names. RIGHT"

Great Janitor: Shouldn't the be the fault of someone like a proof reader or someone in quality control at the station?

It is the fault of common sense. Where were you when we needed you?!?!?

MaudlinMutantMollusk: Anyone who can parse this Gene Masseth bullsh*t out in a way that makes sense to me gets a free month of TF

The joke is: Gene Masseth is the guy's real name. The other guy in the photo made up "Haywood Jablome" as a joke. But to make it even more funny (sic), Farkers and others pretend that Gene Masseth is the joke name, then drive others crazy by fake-hinting, but not revealing the joke ... because the joke is, there's nothing funny about the name.

2013-07-13 01:42:16 AM
Next time try submitting the name to someone other than the receptionists 12-year-old son

Those responsible at the NTSB were Harry Pitts and Ralph Artz
Segment producer was Wayne Dwop

It's very similar to the joke image of the very busty girl tied to a chair and everyone who sees the picture comments about the show on the TV behind her. (Ignore the obvious, pretend something innocuous is the main subject and see who falls for it)

You couldn't be more wrong. If the French accent doesn't work, try German. Sometimes that helps.

If I have to work that hard to get a goddamned joke, it's not worth the effort

/and I know I have a fully armed and operational sense of humor

You ever see the prank where someone put a piece of garbage on a pedestal at a museum next to a real piece of art, and then a bunch of art snobs spend days agonizing over all the nuances of why the fake piece is brilliant and insightful?

So it IS just meaningless bullsh*t that is perpetuated for no other reason that it's meaningless?

/makes perfect sense
//'specially here

Yep.

Guys interviewed for the newspaper in 2009 snuck in a funny name, and they did it by tucking it behind an actual name/fake name that wasn't dirty.

Gene Masseth was the normal name, and instead of laughing at the funny name he said, "Ha! Gene Masseth is hilarious!" With the normal snark we all love.

A few people posted wondering how Gene Masseth was funny, and thus the meme was born.

Thank you

And why isn't it, "Former intern"?

You realize he didn't give them the names right?  He just confirmed the names the station asked him about.  I can imagine scenarios where the latter might be an actual mistake.

The brilliant part is that it does sound kinda like it should mean something.

jtown: I donated a computer to a project at a local university back when computers were still spendy items.  In exchange, my name was to be engraved on one of the microsatellites they were sending up.  I initially requested credit as Hugh Jass but later decided it was childish and said they should use my real name.  They said not to worry about it as most of the names were of the Haywood Jablome variety.  I don't know whether they used my real name or not.

There was a guy at our dorm who got junk mail under the name Hugh C. Chardon.

There was an aspiring model in my high school class.  She was given the title of "most likely to become a model" and the yearbook staff thought it was a stupid category, made up just for her large ego.  The girl was asian and they put her name as "Inme Oh" in the caption.  The teacher who proofread the yearbook saw that name and realized that on her Senior picture, the name was different.  Can't have that, so he changed that one to Inme Oh as well.  It went to print that way.

That was the same year they snuck "Bong Smigth" and "Tomy Smegma" into the Junior section.

REO-Weedwagon: So the NTSB had their slave labor relay the information to the person at the TV station who is no doubt doing the jobs of five people for $11 an hour. The anchor is a moron with a phony journalism degree from Arizona State or some other degree mill. The station manager was probably promoted from the sales department and actually knows nothing about broadcasting.

It's a long chain of incompetence and apathetic labor.

At which station did you work?

When your brain learns to do a job well enough, it will sometimes shunt your cognition a bit to make you more efficient at that specific task.

You should see the crap they've done to pet/mri scans that goes by a radiologist without them even realizing that someone put mickey mouse ears on a kidney or the outline of a sailboat where a liver should be.

Their job is to read that teleprompter. They hone in on that, get 'in the zone' and well, you get what we have here.
