I got socks and underwear for my 16th birthday.

Well i agree.

The only way we're gonna put a stop to this insanity is with a solid foundation in reading, writing, and science.

Wow.

Words fail me.

That girl has bigger balls than anyone I know.

The problem is that the ones that need educating the most are the same ones that shot her, and they're already beyond redemption by education

/until they're gone and have stopped spreading their poison to their children, there is no hope

2013-07-13 12:26:27 AM
She then paused to pick up the bleached oblong skull of the former Mullar Omar and hold it in the gleaming light above the podium. The skull was now with gold filigree and emeralds, and took a long deep drink of wine before pounding her fist on the podium, shrieking "I will not rest until mine enemies are disemboweled, their families razed to the ground, and their shrunken heads placed alongside the road to my palace! The holy cleansing fire of my wrath shall know no bounds until it is slaked with the knowledge that the Taliban have been expunged from the pages of history," her voice rising steadily. "Their death shrieks shall serve as warning to all who would dare oppose my iron fist!" she screamed and cackled with delight.

Well, that's what she should have said, anyway.

And just two days ago (three now, I guess), I marked my birthday by drinking alone at home.

\Celebrated with people and stuff last weekend, and will do so again this one.

Dear gun-wielding coward,

How's that whole attempted-child-murder thing working out for ya?

Diaf,
Everyone

2013-07-13 01:06:00 AM
She's braver than me.

2013-07-13 03:04:34 AM
She's 100% correct.

Want people to not do cruel, violent, and suicidal things? You have to teach them there is a better way.

2013-07-13 03:09:03 AM
This girl is ten tons of awesome. Her courage is humbling.

Higher education will always be opposed by people whose worldview requires a Bronze Age perspective to perpetuate itself. If you can stand up to those people while they hold a gun to your head, well, you're a far better person than I am.

2013-07-13 04:32:38 AM
meh, i would have done a MUCH better job.

2013-07-13 04:50:53 AM
Ugh, she's dressed in all pink.  There's no way to take her seriously.

2013-07-13 05:41:04 AM
I applaud her, but I really do wonder how such a change can be enacted in countries that are so steeped in violence and repressive towards women. Women rally for rights in Pakistan and mobs of thousands of men come down and attack them. Girls try to to get an education in Afghanistan and they are brutally murdered. I don't see how change can come easily when someone is willing to shoot a kid just because they want to learn how to read.

2013-07-13 05:42:04 AM
And her country, her people might just have a chance of being dragged into modernity, kicking and screaming.

We need a word better than hero, hero has been watered down. I mean sure, some guy who saves ducklings is awesome. This is something so much beyond that.

I'd like to know how and where she learned these ideas. If she can think them, why can't others? And I mean others in her community. She can't be the only one.

/Good for her.

You should see if you can pick up a copy of 'Iron Jawed Angels', think it was an HBO special. It was about the fight for women's rights in the United States, and the violence that took place against those women. They were imprisoned, beaten, and when they went on a hunger strike, had their jaws pried open with tools and were violently force fed (hence the name).

Now, there's a clear difference in violence and problems here. But you have to look to where progress takes place for minorities. Education, spread of information, exposure to different cultures and environments, and time.

Honestly, in the US I *never* thought we'd see gay rights come this far. I went to HS in the late 1980s. My freshman year it was *seriously* discussed in my honors science class ...that homosexuals should be sent to camps because of AIDS. Not just people with the virus. All homosexuals. The teacher was part of this discussion. Oh and that they should also be visibly tattooed, so if/when they were allowed to move outside the 'camps' people would know who they were. Memory hazy, but either I (or more likely someone else and I'm misremembering it) pointed out the obvious correllaries to the Holocaust.

They insisted it was entirely different.

20 years ago..ish. The change in gay rights in this country has been nothing short of extraordinary. And in many places in the world. Still some backwards cultures who want to kill homosexuals, but they can't escape modernity either. There's just no reason for a lot of these bigotries outside of ignorance. You can't expunge that from some people (PAULA DEEN. Lookin' at you sweetcheeks) but the next generation can start with a better basis.

Life for humans on planet Earth, all the shiat aside, continues to improve. Violence worldwide has drastically dramatically fallen.

Girls who attempt to educate themselves are a blasphemy to his teachings, they are to be the victims of the holy jihad, they who bare their heads without coverings and go against the words of their fathers and husbands.
Let us shout joyful praise "Allah Akbar!" as the brave warriors of virtue who are the true servants of Muhammad and through him Allah, cut from this wretched woman's neck her head and make her dull dead eyes watch as we celebrate by fornicating with young boys in holy sodomy in his name!

I closed the video after she thanked god and then thanked people who prayed for her. Not the medics, surgeons, emergency personnel, and others who worked in tandem to save her life. She's full of the same ignorance she wants to fight.

Uh, if you had any patience you would have heard her thank them too.  It only took her a couple more sentences.

She also had some insightful words to say education.

I may not share her faith in Allah, but I can respect it.   Not all Muslims are ignorant or terrorists or even hateful. I highly recommend you at least tune into the highlights - I had seen bits and pieces on various news sources before this, but not the whole thing

"Let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world. Education is the only solution."

those doesn't sound like the words of someone who is ignorant to me.

You're no better than the people who shot her. You close your ears after you hear one thing you don't like. You should have kept listening.

"I don't know where to begin my speech. I don't know what people would be expecting me to say. But first of all, thank you to God for whom we all are equal and thank you to every person who has prayed for my fast recovery and a new life. I cannot believe how much love people have shown me. I have received thousands of good wish cards and gifts from all over the world. Thank you to all of them. Thank you to the children whose innocent words encouraged me. Thank you to my elders whose prayers strengthened me.

I would like to thank my nurses, doctors and all of the staff of the hospitals in Pakistan and the UK and the UAE government who have helped me get better and recover my strength."

I challenge you to read her whole speech without the room getting dusty.

I have no interest in entertaining a battle between interpretations of god. She (or her parents) chose that opening paragraph for a reason, and I think it's in error. Let's support education, but first I want to praise god for allowing me to live.

While the cost of higher education has gotten to a point where it is necessary to use it to find lucrative employment, the whole point of higher education is really to keep people from being mouth breathing ignoramuses .  That's why they call it "indoctrination" on faux news.  It's hard for people like the Koch Bros to totally hijack government when people know their little tricks.

How much money would it take to send a plane or two over to some of these places that think women are a burden, and offer to relocate all those troublesome females far, far away so that the male types left can live in peace?  Probably a lot less than has been spent trying to stamp out the ignorance and hatred of the last few centuries.

Southern CA, but...a Catholic school. The science classes were science, they never brought religion into it. But of course it may simply be that their religious attitudes totally colored that situation. Especially if it is shockingly anomalous.

Another thing from that radio story- the mention of some Pakistanis getting on to social media to criticize her ("she's making Islam look bad").  It's my impression that Pakistan is one of the absolute whiniest countries out there on the subject of their image.  It also seems to me that so many Pakistanis get more angry over the barbarism that goes on there getting media play than they are about the fact that the barbarism actually happened.  The disconnect staggers me sometimes.

Yo ...

First off, towns like yours are reasons cities like where I live are thriving. All the smart people leave, leaving behind the people that want concentration camps for gays. 20 years of this, and we have our red/blue split in America. Bright people leave backwards areas, hateful bigoted people stay.

That model probably is followed in Pakistan as well - the bright people in the north flee to Karachi or Islamabad or Lahore - the really bright ones find a way to get to England. Whats left behind are the sh*thead bigot bully losers whose only economic model is based on tribal warfare and 8th century religion replacing science.

I wonder if instead of seeing into Pakistan's future, where education brings them up to Western standards .. we aren't instead looking at our own - where tribalism, religious zealotry and lack of education eventually doom our red state areas to being even more like the Taliban than they already are, as bright people from those regions continue to flee to our big cities.

It's already happening. My neighborhood in Seattle has been a mecca for gays and artists and educated people for over 20 years, I'm one of the early arrivers; not gay, but fleeing a dumbass home town full of crapass people that probably would have loved concentration camps for gays if they'd thought of it yet. Every year, my area of town gets every small town's bullied, intelligent, STEM-skilled or art skilled people move here, or visit here and flip out at how many of their own kind they find walking around. It's not just here, its every city on the West Coast does this to some extent, San Francisco or the Bay Area being the original model for this type of migration but it happens everywhere in America. Smart / sensitive / intelligent people say fark this noise I'm out and they leave and they never go back. 200 years of that, we have a taliban environment in our rural areas. It's already happening.

Eventually America will be another Pakistan perhaps. Isolated cities with isolated people while the redneck hatred of the rural areas has won over the government. Thats already happening too.

I too graduated in the late eighties. Never heard anything like that. Scary!!

Southern CA, but...a Catholic school. The science classes were science, they never brought religion into it. But of course it may simply be that their religious attitudes totally colored that situation. Especially if it is shockingly anomalous.

It may also be that everyone was petrified of AIDS in the 80s and the prevalent opinion was that it was an entirely gay disease.  It wasn't just the religious who thought so. But you're little more than a bigot (given your last sentence of the post), so I wouldn't expect you to remember outside of your hate filled mind.

You can't.  I'd say teach those who want to learn, and those taliban types can go be ignorant elsewhere, away from civilized people.  If they insist on cramming their ignorance down other's throats, then kill them like the pathogens they are.

And here we are with today's religion-bashing thread. Got anything new for us?

Nice speech. Well-intentioned and completely pointless.

Invoking Gandhi is not a magical sainthood card. Gandhi was up against the British, who had at least a passing acquaintance with basic human dignity. If Gandhi had challenged the Taliban they would have cut his head off and showed us the video.

The speech doesn't accomplish jack shiat.

Not a one of the people who need to heed Malala's message the most give a damn. Israel's out. They can't defend their own borders without USA backing them up with weapons and money.

History proves the 8th century goat herders that populate this part of the world will never change, because they haven't yet. Their "golden age" was during a time where Europe was completely farked, and China was completely isolated. Now that neither is the case, what point is the rural middle non-oil-producing South Asian mountains? Don't really need them as a sea route for trade any more.

If the world just abandoned these asswits to their own isolation I doubt anyone'd care.

As for this girl, she has a bright future in lecturing the West in how much our policies screwed up her region, once she learns there's money to be made in the UK, USA and elsewhere.

She's right and pretty much everyone agrees.   Even the Taliban would agree that a good foundation of education would stop a lot of problems.  It's what is being taught to who that is the importantdifference and really once religion gets in to the mix nothing good will come of the 'education'.

Lady Indica: DoomPaul: I applaud her, but I really do wonder how such a change can be enacted in countries that are so steeped in violence and repressive towards women. Women rally for rights in Pakistan and mobs of thousands of men come down and attack them. Girls try to to get an education in Afghanistan and they are brutally murdered. I don't see how change can come easily when someone is willing to shoot a kid just because they want to learn how to read.

Even if the cruelties and injustices of organized religion disappear, there will always be corporatism.  There's a lot less outrage in the West toward sweatshop owners, and the plantation owners and overseers in Jamaica, Haiti and Mississippi weren't wearing turbans.

Except if you actually watched the video, you'd know she thanked everyone else too.

I did watch it. I watched the first few minutes before I got sick of the god talk. It's nice that the people that worked and paid for the care eventually got a nod, but it's clear that god and prayer deserves the real credit

So basically once you heard the word God your bigotry kicked in and you never heard a word after that.

She mentioned God once, and then she thanked all the PEOPLE who prayed for her, and the PEOPLE who sent her cards and words of encouragement. Then she thanks the doctors, nurses etc. Of course if you weren't so blinded by your hatred for people of religion you would have known that.

2013-07-13 11:02:50 AM
The wealthy classes in Pakistan have always provided quality education for their daughters.  I know quite a few Pakistani women near where I live...including one of my father's doctors....who received first class educations in Pakistan.

This is about tribalism, and local control.  Pakistan is a nation of tribes (extended families).  Tribal affiliation is everything in a shiat-hole like Pakistan.   The wealthy, urban tribes, are usually quite progressive in their attitudes about how women should be treated (progressive by Muslim standards).  The flatearthers out in the villages are another matter.  True to stereotypes that pretty much hold all over the world as concerns rural people, the rural dwellers of Pakistan tend to be illiterate, unskilled, violent, farkwits.  They don't want education for their children because they fear...rightfully....that when their kids find out what the outside world is like, they'll take off and never be back.  It also serves the interests of the ruling class because it limits competition and challenges to their authority.

I admire her for her bravery, but I am pessimistic about there being any meaningful change in the region anytime soon. Just a couple of weeks ago a couple of sisters in Pakistan were the victims of an honor killing because they made a video of themselves dancing in the rain. Somehow, it is dishonorable to have playful happy daughters over there

I suspect that her fondness for education came from outside, western contamination.  Which is why the Taliban is so intent on stamping it out.

Once we pull out of Afghanistan, there will be no more education for girls; I doubt any western charities will be able to operate there for decades, if not centuries.

I think that we can make meaningful changes inn the region.  We just need to mobilize every able-bodied soldier in our military, line them up and march across the entire country, killing every male over the age of 5.   Other than that or some equally drastic option then you are right, the region is probably not going to change.

Definitely the Christian fundies aren't so inclined to use violence.  OTOH some of them are trying to get laws passed in this country that would force their beliefs on others, so I see them as a more immediate (if much less lethal) threat to individual freedom.

Make no mistake, chump. The fundies in this country would be executing gays, kids who sass back at their parents, and women who wear slacks 24/7 if they thought they could get away with it.

The only difference for now is that our Founding Fathers were smart enough to put in Constitutional barriers to keep these Domonionist psychos from having an easy coup.

DoomPaul: I applaud her, but I really do wonder how such a change can be enacted in countries that are so steeped in violence and repressive towards women. Women rally for rights in Pakistan and mobs of thousands of men come down and attack them. Girls try to to get an education in Afghanistan and they are brutally murdered. I don't see how change can come easily when someone is willing to shoot a kid just because they want to learn how to read.

Well, no, I don't see how change can come EASILY, either.  But I think she's right in that the best (and possibly only) long-term solution involves education.

There may be also, sadly, a need to use guns and tanks and bombs.  But guns and tanks and bombs alone will not solve the problem.  You can't get rid of groups like the Taliban just by hunting down and killing every last member, because there would always be more people willing to join them.

Lady Indica: Honestly, in the US I *never* thought we'd see gay rights come this far.

Don't misunderstand me.  I agree that there has been a big change in that time.  But it is worth pointing out that those people are not completely gone.

God-is-a-Taco: I closed the video after she thanked god and then thanked people who prayed for her. Not the medics, surgeons, emergency personnel, and others who worked in tandem to save her life. She's full of the same ignorance she wants to fight.
Nice pink outfit, though.

Speaking of being full of the same ignorance one wants to fight, have you ever heard of false equivalence?

cherryl taggart: How much money would it take to send a plane or two over to some of these places that think women are a burden, and offer to relocate all those troublesome females far, far away so that the male types left can live in peace?

I doubt there's much that they'd disapprove of more than their women and girls living free, educated, and probably secular lives some far-off place over which they had no control.  Except maybe seeing their women and girls living free, educated, and probably secular lives right next to them (presumably behind giant see-through walls they couldn't shoot through).

Besides, who would be their slaves if not women?  You can't teach a goat to cook a decent kebab.

.... and 90% of these "delegates" clapped politely and then went back home to their oppressive states to beat their wives/daughters/whatever. The end.

flypusher713: Clemkadidlefark: Education is not the answer.  What kids learn is the answer.

Fair enough.  Let's go for reading, writing, 'rithmatic, science, history, and critical thinking.  Teach those properly (i.e. honestly), and the kids will turn out OK.

100%

If you have an education then you can read. If you can read then you can read the Koran. If you can read the Koran then you know the will of God. If you know the will of God then you can teach it to your children. How can any good Muslim have a problem with that?
