I'm sure he's a nice guy. That doesn't negate the fact that he's an idiot and personally responsible for the downfall of MS

This isn't really Slashdot, it's the new "business" site that Dice launched after buying Slashdot. For some reason it's on the same domain. 90% of the articles are pure shiat (like this one) and look like they came from the same content farm that churns out articles for Forbes, etc.

He's done quite well for himself, considering his claim to fame is he was Bill Gates friend from college. He's like the Frank Oz of the tech wold.

When did Dice buy Slashdot? I used to read /. back in the heyday of the internet when the BBS era was just dying out but there is only so much smug Linux user talk a man can take before he just doesn't give a shiat about what a site has to say anymore.

Indeed, the entire Office suite is a revelation since the introduction of the Ribbon user interface, a new way of approaching menus that leads users through the process of constructing complex documents.

Really? The Ribbon user interface is being tauted as a positive thing?

Even in design (hardly something it is famed for) Microsoft has often led the way-though it has rarely been appreciated for it.

And the truly ugly Metro design?

What a load of horse exhaust.

Lo and behold after treading water for a decade it seems that that shiat is up 27%. Sometimes you get lucky. That reminds me - I better sell that shiat soon.

I don't understand it. Bezos runs Amazon, and some quarters Amazon doesn't even make a profit. When they have a profitable quarter, it's a razor thin profit for a company its size. But everyone and Wall Street loves that company.

On the other hand, Ballmer runs a company which makes a healthy profit every quarter, even if every once in awhile they miss estimates. Yet he's farking up Microsoft? Microsoft is still one of the biggest tech companies out there and unless XBox, Windows and Office all of a sudden stop selling, the company will be around for a while.

What you're missing is that people don't care about investing in successful, profitable companies.  They care about owning "hot"stock with sex appeal- otherwise known as gambling.  If I had some money to invest, Microsoft would be on my list.

The author stated, and I quoted him, that "the entire Office suite is a revelation since the introduction of the Ribbon user interface"like it was some revolutionary improvement. The software's functionality wasn't changed, just the menu interface.

The stated aim of this change was to reveal more of the software's capabilities to the end users and, for all I know, it may have done that to some extent. For power users it decreased productivity by making the menu 'dynamic' requiring the end user to hunt around for menu items that move around. Of course lots of people are getting along with it since it was a change that came without any other option. End users have, of necessity, adapted to the interface.

As far as the Metro interface, my subjective opinion is that it's butt ugly and that calling it great design work is wrong.  Aesthetically I think it's a step backward from Windows 7. But that's like just my opinion, man.

My Windows 8.1 start screen is farking great - because I customized it. I put the update tiles in a column, I put applications in another, and games in a third. I guess digging around in the old Windows 95 start menu is more efficient for some people, but it's a PITA to go back to 7 once you configure 8 the way you want it to be (roaming start screen is good also)

He's got the confidence of his shareholders, he's grown the company faster than Bill Gates did, and he's given Microsoft a fighting chance in the emerging markets that will eventually dwarf the PC software market.

He's a  highly competent buffoon!

I know that people love to hate on Microsoft and Balmer, but you have to hand it to them, for decades now, they've been taking in the billions in profit each quarter, and not just one or two divisions:
-Windows? Billions in profit each quarter.
-Office? Billions every quarter.
-Server? Billions of dollars.
-Aszure? Yep, billions to the bank
-Xbox? More billions in profits.

The company stock value is near 10-year highs and a solid dividend payment, yet you still hear people biatching, because . . . Because!

If windows 8 is so much faster etc etc etc will suck your dick for you every morning, why couldn't they have used all that great programming and left the goddamn interface alone instead of trying to make it into a marketplace to sell you "apps" and sh*t? It would have been just as good with a modified windows 7 interface instead of the crayon box crap mobile interface that fills the screen with windows 8, and it should have stated that way.

I don't want "apps", I don't want colored boxes all over the place, and I don't want to have to buy 3rd party software to use my desktop the way I want to.

Want to make it work better? Great. Change the guts, tweak the rest, done.

It's not change that's bad.   If I hated change as much as half you idiots say I do then I'd never of moved from DOS6.22 and Windows 3.1.  Blatantly that isn't the case because here I am running a modern OS, a modern browser and I've no problems with change so long as it is an improvement over the previous offering/configuration.

If your only defence against "Metro sucks on a desktop" and "The ribbon interface is a usability nightmare" is to insinuate we don't like change.... you're a moron.  Plain and simple.  You have no idea what we are talking about and no matter how slowly we speak you still won't be able to understand.  Perhaps you should go ask daddy what the big words mean?  He might give you a crayola for not shiatting yourself for the last hour.

Vaneshi: LasersHurt: Some people don't hate change as much as you.

But in the spirit of fair play, I do find you wanton shilling somewhat amusing.  You may continue to dance for my amusement... this time.

The ribbons suck because they change in every version of office. Like farking "wizards" for routers. It just slows down knowledgeble users.

I guess it sells books and shiat.

Keyboard shortcuts for Office have been the same for decades, the location of the keys on the keyboard have been about the same since the invention of the terminal in the 60s. I know it's just a paycheck and all, but time to lean time to clean.
