You know what the problem with the radical activists on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is.........

2013-07-12 09:12:47 AM
I would do the same to keep Budweiser from store shelves.

School districts could do the same. If you close the buildings and turn off the lights, the money savings is enormous.

"That's what you get for sneaking your firewater on the reservation and getting the Injuns all stirred up. Back in my days they'd get drunk and raid cabins and kill white people."

This is why we can't have nice things.

that "tiny little village" is whiteclay, nebraska, which sits on the border of the dry pine ridge indian reservation. it consists of four liquor stores that sell 13,000 cans of beer PER DAY to the native americans of pine ridge.

2013-07-12 09:26:54 AM
God I love Pine Ridge and Whiteclay, they never disappoint, and this kind of stuff happens yearly...

2013-07-12 09:27:34 AM
Way to cave. Is another distributor set to sell 13,000 cans of beer per day? I can see hiring some Road Warrior types to protect shipments of booze to the very thirsty little town.

2013-07-12 09:28:30 AM
And for F*ck's sake, it was a pellet gun, all you're going to do with that is shoot an eye out, or piss someone off, lots....

This. The President of the Oglala Sioux visited Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman this week about Whiteclay's targeted sales towards one of the most destitute places in America. Per usual, the man was treated like a dumb ol' injun, so he did the only logical thing: he walked out on the governor.

Dude, that's only a 12-pack per day per adult. What's the problem?

Isn't that the same area where you have to make sure not to run over passed out drunks on the roadway?

Ah. Another thread in which Fark gets to display its cultural sensitivity toward any race that isn't white.

By which I mean I'm not even going to bother commenting. Have at it, white people. We're all just a bunch of red-skinned scumbags, aren't we?

2013-07-12 09:37:21 AM
I wonder if that would work with fracking and drilling companies. . . .

. . . maybe if they were taking live fire they would go poison someone else's land and water.

Uh, someone needs re-training on how to "shotgun a beer".

I'm technically a red-skinned scumbag and I'm also irish, so the stereotype fits for me at least as I can't tan to save my life, and I've been working outside quite a bit this summer so I've started to take on a nice redish hue...

I think it's more of the fact that they are attacking the driver that is just doing his job. Of course as a Psychology student and having read "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" in a university English class I understand how rampant Alcoholism and depression is in reservations.

Like I said, I support Bryan Brewer's decision. Heineman gave him the usual condescension that Nebraskan Republicans (Excuse the redundancy) always give the Oglala, and so he left the meeting.

Any thread whose article mentions Native Americans -- no matter how incidental -- eventually becomes filled with derogatory comments about Native Americans. I've seen it time and time again on Fark, and I'm sick of that behavior being tacitly tolerated.

Is it OUR fault that the injuns can't seem to get enough booze? Supply & Demand.

I just read that Whiteclay has a population of 14. Why not send a few families from the tribe there and then take over the local government? Live there for a year or two to establish residency in the state, then vote the town dry.

Yep. The history of that area is farking horrible.

The state of Nebraska and the federal government receives over $400,000  a year in tax revenue from White Clay due to the sale of alcohol. The state isn't going to screw with that kind of income by enforcing those pesky laws.

The Ogala Nation needs to allow alcohol sales on the reservation and use the income to help their own people out --- rather than letting the tax revenue go to the state and federal governments.

It isn't even the State of Nebraska's law to enforce. The reservation isn't even in Nebraska, and the dry law is tribal law, so there's two things working against them enforcing anything. Somebody upthread suggested that some locals could vote the town dry, I imagine that could work if NE state law allows dry towns or counties. A quick look at Wikipedia says no, and that localities can only approve or deny license applications in accordance with state law.

I think you're right that the Ogala Nation needs to either allow sales on the reservation or start checking cars coming in if they really don't want it there. They're experiencing the same thing every other dry county does in the country...liquor stores setting up just on the other side of the line because no matter how much you ban liquor, people still want to get their drink on, and will go where they need to make their purchases.

If MI's beer distributors did that, Flint and Detroit would be the driest cities in the nation.  I've heard many stories that drivers wished it was just a pellet gun used on them.  All the beer drivers I know carry only their license and $5 in their pockets.  They leave the rest of their wallets and personal keys back at the DC.  It is surprising no one thinks to hit other delivery drivers.

One summer during college I drove a Ford 9000 delivering Coca Cola up on Peak to Peak Highway in Colorado. In the tiny outpost former mining town Ward, a hippie shot my truck with a .22 every time I drove through. Told the Marshall down in Nederland and he laughed "He shoots at everybody. It's nothing to worry about".

Told my Manager who said, "Oh .. yeah. For got to tell you about that guy."

For all that revenue, it seems a beer distributor could afford a Bearcat.

Great, except for this line in the FArQ:

"Hate speech: Criticism is not hate speech, but inflammatory comments directed at a particular ethnic group, sexual orientation, gender, religion, etc. are unacceptable and unwelcome on Fark."

Obviously, it isn't enforced enough if you think it's OK to make racist posts.

Where did I say it's ok? I said it farking happens. Deal with it. I'm not seeing you defending any of those other groups mentioned. Do you think it's ok to disparage them, or are you just a hypocrite who gets butthurt when it's your chosen group's turn on the pillory?

Ah, I see. You're an idiot.

So what does the tribal leadership think is going to happen when the remove this source of alcohol from what is apparently a gigantic pool of alcoholics? They are all going to miracle themselves sober? No, what is going to happen is the next ring of towns is going to pick up where White Clay left off. MXYPLTZ42 has a viable solution, turn the problem inward, develop a self funding recovery program, and breed the habit out generationally.

2013-07-12 02:48:40 PM

James F. Campbell: ... No?

But they don't warrant a defense by you. Got it.

James F. Campbell: Ah, I see. You're an idiot.

So, you didn't chose to defend them on Fark? I'd be really interested to hear how you're being forced into doing it.

Yeah, those poor injuns they can't make decisions for themselves.

Liberty means allowing people to decide how they want to live. It also means that some people will make farked up decisions so what?

The people who run those liquor stores in Whiteclay are the dog shiat on the devil's boots.  They and anyone who distributes beer to them deserve to get shot at.

Ward hasn't changed much. It's like a tiny chunk of Appalachia, ripped up and plopped down 1000 miles away.
