Maybe it's because the big 3 news channels are so full of shiat and MSNBC's target audience are the first to finally catch on and tune out?

No one wants to see Liberals trying to act like Conservatives?

I don't turn on the TV for anything but digital movies and TV shows on DVD or iTunes.  I listen to the Maddow podcast, but that doesn't help their ratings.

That, or Joe Scarborough is a tiresome windbag, Chris Matthews won't shut his farking mouth after asking a question and talks over the person trying to answer to the point you start shouting at the screen, or you can't tell the the folks with thick black frames on their glasses apart.

I'll spend my morning coffee with a news feed reader from now on, thanks.

I love the woman.  And agree or disagree with her, you can't say she isn't well researched.  I dearly wish she was on another channel.

I have Rachel Maddow's podcast in my Stitcher feed. It's not something I'd want to listen to everyday, but it's not awful for something to listen to occasionally.

This is by design.

When NBC gets Carlos Quintanilla host the Nightly NBC News, the shift is to the far right.

That and the fact that they're targeting a demographic that doesn't watch cable news.

I'm a late 20s fairly liberal newsfiend, but I can't recall ever turning on cable news at any point in my life. I'm not the only one. That's trouble for MSNBC.

2013-07-12 09:14:58 AM
Liberals are too intelligent to spend their time watching news television when they can read or listen to more insightful analysis online.

2013-07-12 09:17:41 AM
Only old people watch cable news.  Why MSNBC thought it could capture any kind of market by going after young people never made much sense.  Then again, cable is a niche market so it doesn't really matter that no one watches them.  Twice as many people may watch Fox News, but that's really nobody either.

When I visit my parents in Sarasota they constantly have on Bay News 9 which is a 24 hour local news channel.  Imagine that.  There is barely enough content globally for CNN to avoid repeating the same stories every half hour.  Bay News 9 repeats the same "Zoning Dispute in Bradenton" story every hour.

2013-07-12 09:18:03 AM
I thought the only time people bothered watching MSNBC or FOX News was in the run up to a Presidential election. With that over, their ratings are going to be down until the 2016 primary season by default.

So true.  Matthews is such a farking loudmouth that even when he gets good guests on the show it's not worth watching because you'll never hear their points.  What an asshole.

People who might watch msnbc are probably more likely to not actually watch tv for their news... I read or watch stuff on the internets.

They're targeting a demographic that has abandoned cable. If they stuck the Maddow show on Netflix and Hulu they would probably do better. I stopped paying AT&T for content years ago, now they're just a utility. Like sewage.

Count me in for "cable news is just awful, so I don't watch it."

Then again, I haven't had cable for some time.

Aggregators like Fark and the occasional NPR during my drive meet my news quotas.

I watch Maddow, Chris Hayes, and occasionally the weekend morning shows (Kornacki/MHP). Very rarely I can tolerate Lawrence O'Donnell. That's really the best I can expect from any cable news outlet, I think: some really good voices, and a lot of crap I don't bother with.

That's an appropriate analogy in your case, considering that sewage allows you to foist your excrement on others.

The people who might watch MSNBC got their news from the internet earlier in the day and watch Netflix when they get home.

2013-07-12 09:36:12 AM
the nighttime hours from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM are too erudite, too sophisticated and too earnest to hook a wide swath of viewers.

That's possible.  Chris Hayes' show usually has guests who are there to give a thoughtful discussion of issues rather than simply push talking points.

I wonder whether people who watch MSNBC shows via the web are accounted for in the ratings.  I ditched my cable TV subscription years ago in favor of watching shows online.

2013-07-12 09:39:00 AM
Sure they do a good job reporting but they never tell me what to think and I'm lost without my talking points.

^^^^ This.  If you are trying to get your news from the TV it's not the right medium to give you the right depth of information.  Or perhaps it is but no one uses it that way, instead relying on 15 second sound bites.

It's a FANTASTIC medium to show stuff that's on fire.

This, and I try to catch Meet the Press even though it's barely watchable now that Dick Gregory took over.

Exactly. Besides, the old Ratings system is ridiculously out-dated at this point; I serious doubt the number of ratings-box-owners who watch MSNBC is in any way representative of how many USians are actually aware of MSNBC coverage. What metrics are they even using? You always see this talk of "ratings" but without understanding the methodology I don't see why anyone should trust those numbers.

Mostly this.  My web browser has CNN and NPR in Tabs.  At night I'll watch movies on Netflix.  But for my commute I'll listen to Rachel Maddow or Democracy Now! podcasts.

2013-07-12 09:47:13 AM
It's almost as if liberals don't need other people to tell them what to think.  MSNBC, at least their commentary portion is having problems for the same reasons Air America did.  Liberals don't need an echo chamber (or at the worst their chosen echo chamber is the internet).

The round table format can work pretty well if everyone is respectful and crosstalk is kept to a minimum.  Chris Hayes and Steve Kornacki have both had shows that manage this surprisingly well.  The advantage of this format is that arguments can be challenged immediately.

I've been using RSS feeds since, well, it seems like forever. Cable news is just too farking loud, like a pack of junkyard dogs barking at you. MSNBC is often the least offensive in this regard, but they do it, too.

The only problem I've encountered is that I sometimes mispronounce the names of world leaders, cities, or principals of news stories because I only read them, and never actually hear it spoken. But it's a sall price to pay to be able to calmly read the news while having my morning beer coffee.

2013-07-12 09:54:30 AM
Because they only have half a tolerable show. And even Maddow is getting stale.

I may be the only one, but I miss Dylan Ratigan's show. Not enough to look up if he's somewhere else these days, but still. It was occasionally clever.

I am a 50-something moderate, and I only turn on cable news on presidential election night, and I cycle through the three biggies. I read my news, and I tend not to trust "breaking" news on cable to have any more accuracy than Joe Schmoe's blog.

Good point. Most of us "liberal elites" know where to get (Read: "Find") our news.

I remember listening to her a few years ago, but I gave up on it because she had this annoying rhetorical tick.  She would structure every sentence like this: [first half of sentence], [rephrasing of first half of sentence], [second rephrasing of first half of sentence], [second half of sentence].  I'm sure it sounded good to  her, but it really started to grind my gears.  Has she stopped doing that?

I stopped watching them ages ago because 1) Joe Scarborough is annoying as shiat and 2) old prison documentaries aren't my idea of weekend news.

They were trying to be a 24-hour news channel without actually doing the 24-hour news part.
