SHUT UP AND TAKE-

Ohh I already bought tickets for tomorrow....

SHUT UP AND COUNT YOUR MONEY

/Can't wait

Meh, that looks like a not even bother with netflix and wait for HBO kind of movie.

2013-07-11 05:17:52 PM
Adam Sandler has a movie out? I thought he died.

2013-07-11 05:18:13 PM
I don't understand - it's already tanked. It's going to lose a fortune, based on opening numbers. Only way it could work now is if it's a sleeper blockbuster - something very, very rare (if it has legs...)

Get out of here Adam Sandler. America is tired of you!

2013-07-11 05:24:04 PM
I read an early review that said it elements of it had a very 'Hellboy' feel to it.  Never saw Hellboy, so I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing

2013-07-11 05:25:58 PM
This movie looks great, and it will tank at the box office, but then everyone will buy it on DVD in six months and never shut up about it ever again.

But we'll never get a sequel.

Hollywood has this shiat down to a science. Even the best numbers forecast predict a huge bomb. It's just one of those movies that a certain number of people will love, but everyone else will skip.

There are five words that describe the total sum of why this movie isn't just a trifle:

Live Action Neon Genesis Evangelion

Grownups was unwatchably bad. Grownups 2can only be worse.

Which means, of course, that the mouth-breathing, Wal-mart-shopping, REAL Muricans that made the Blue Collar Comedy Toura huge success will LOVE it and it will make $200 million even without overseas tickets.

Pacific Rimwon't be a flop like Battleship. It will just be a 'meh' movie, like the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.

2013-07-11 05:30:39 PM
Will this "Pacific Rim" be as unmentionably perverse as a "Rusty Venture"?

2013-07-11 05:31:35 PM
Looks really good. Better than my initial jaded "Robot Jox meets Mass Effect" brush-off before seeing the trailer.

Holy shiat, it's got a 3% (not a typo) on RT. 1 person out of 34 gave it a fresh, and his thing was he didn't hate it, so it's not that bad.

All I can say is I didn't DISlike it. It astounded me too much with its nonsense, and it's not nearly as offensive as I'd anticipated. So I have no real issue with it.

It will be a sad day when some CGI film of robots fighting beats a character and friendship relationship study by Adam Sandler.

Grownups has taught us more about the human condition than all the Transformer movies combined.

Grownups 2 promises even more.

My boyfriend doesn't want to see this and I feel like I MUST see this at a theatre (and I am NOT one to go to theatres often.)  Freaking giant monsters and giant robots? YES.  I am negotiating whatever trade off it would take to get him to go with me.  Wah. These are not normal people problems

Hellboy is a great movie... I loved it and that was also worth seeing in a theatre.

Gonna have to up my ante tonight so we can try to go this weekend at least.

The Day the Earth Stood Still is at 21% on RT, Pacific Rim is at 72%. The only problem is PR cost 190 million to make which is way out of line with what other monster movies have been able to make.

I think the fight scenes look cool, but if the entire film is nothing but that, i'd think that would get boring.

I already left Man of Steel early because i got sick of watching him or Zod get thrown thru building after building after building.

AV Club review makes it sound like it was post converted, at least they said the 3D version screens looked muddier or something to that effect, which is typical of post converted films.

Grown Ups 2 will not make the international box office that this movie will.  fark the US Box Office, giant things fighting each other and shiat blowing up has proven to succeed in the worldwide market, I bet it easily makes back what was spent to make it.

Thats really a brilliant reason NOT to see it.

If you like convoluted farked up soap operas that happen to have giant robot battles, watch NGE the TV series. Those characters have very good reasons for being nutjobs and pansies and other forms of farking crazy.
If you like giant robot battles, watch the new movies that are out.

But in terms of the film being mostly CGI anyway, i'm not sure thats such a bad thing.... I mean, anything computer generated is easily converted to proper 3d... The only thing that would be artificial 3d is the humans.

Wouldn't a handful of really giant monsters wreaking havoc on Earth just get nuked? Or the military would replace the nuclear explody parts of a MIRV with something solid and dense like DU, making it into a really big and really fast bullet.

I'd say set up shore batteries of GAU-8s Avenger cannons, presuming their hides can't stop 30mm depleted uranium shells firing at 4,000 rounds per minute.

Pumpernickel bread: I read an early review that said it elements of it had a very 'Hellboy' feel to it.  Never saw Hellboy, so I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing

The dude doing the monster design (among other things) is Guillermo del Toro, who directed Hellboy and Hellboy II.  He's known for absurdly creative visual design that hits the perfect balance at the maximum point of improbably awesome without actually crossing into surreal, and his action sequences have a sort of beautifully-paced choreography that has a very "real" and solid feel rather than the practiced and smooth acrobatics of your usual blockbuster chase/fight scene.  He's also known for going all-out on set design even when it's completely unnecessary.

Basically he's a designer/director that has a very good feel for how a movie is different from a cartoon or a play, and continually does things to make it worth your while to actually watch.

Since Hellboy was an outright comedy/action movie that kind of showed off his trademarks to their best advantage, I'd probably say "good thing".  He's at his best when he's taking the unrealistic and making it believable, so action/comedy in some proportion is ideal.  His forays into horror (Pan's Labyrinth) have been... good, but not really as accessible, probably because fantastic beings having to deal with the same shiat as normal folk like gravity and awkward social situations is the fun part.

TLDR: "A Hellboy feel" means "Like an original Jim Henson movie with bigger action sequences and less David Bowie".

Well, they come from the oceans and fark shiat up in populated areas, then I assume they leave.  Once they're in the ocean again, dropping a nuke is a very bad plan given that it might not even penetrate far enough and the fallout could be the last straw on already-kinda-farked fish populations.

Shooting them with really, really, absurdly big guns does seem like a more efficient plan than making a giant robot to punch them in the dick, though.  Maybe they just really really want to cut civilian casualties as much as possible?  The robot plan probably is less collateral damage than dropping a tungsten cannonball from orbit or whatever.

Plus, you could also mount the giant guns on the robot and get the best of both worlds.

//If they go with the old giant monster explanation of "we don't have any nukes because that's what they eat, they've been going after the reactors and missile silos for months now" I would totally accept that as well.
//WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM!?!?!?

Nuke the site from orbit, it's the only way to be SURE.
